I agree with Sullivan only roughly half the time and I find his "sophisticated" Christianity insufferable but he is right on about Palin...her candidacy was the most insane anything in the history of anything...just embarrassing.
Andrew Sullivan is a profoundly ignorant idiot. His views on Kennedy were embarrassing. I've watched this moron for the last 10 years. He's grown up marginally, I watch him like a dull child. He really hasn't learned enough.
Doesn’t Will.i.am know that you’re supposed to take off your hat indoors? Besides, the thing is distractingly small, as if he’s trying to balance it up there.
right down the names of all of the people who supported Palin and never listen to a word they say again. Its beyond embarrassing for America, way beyond.
I don't know about that. I mean she IS a growing "celebrity" but do we really need to give her attention. If people ignored her every time she rode into town on her bus or asked for an interview, she would eventually stop. Then again, she would fall back on a website or social networking. The point is, this kind of thing doesn't deserve as much attention as its worth.
FFS, the audience drives me fucking batshit crazy; they come to a show with a left-leaning host, who has no sympathy or respect for Palin what-so-ever, and they applaud and cheer Sullivan for taking an anti-Palin standpoint as though he's 'telling it like it is' in the midst of a centrist and civil crowd. Bunch of insecure twats for whom it's not enough to have views, but who need to have them re-affirmed by those in the public eye. Applaud good arguments, not strong and/or emotional opinions.
@ExEverest10 He was making a good arguement. It's good for people that have enough sense to know she's a joke to get together and discuss how to deal with her as a joke without having to deal with some one fool enough to sidetrack the discussion by claiming she isn't.
@monokhem Actually. if you'll allow me to augment my response, I think I'll do you one better; you assume that because Sullivan brings up arguments [arguably good] that the same audience would applaud arguments they don't agree with, but of the same quality, the same. I think you'll agree that implicit within whatever implied argument Sullivan put forth was a very strong opinion; that Palin was a 'farce','joke', that her potential presidency was 'absurd', etc.
@monokhem So, even if he was bringing up a strong argument in support of his point of view, I don't think that one can easily differentiate the two in this video, and say that the audience applauded the argument rather than the opinion. If one contrasts an equivalent strength of argument and pov, but one which is contrary to this position, for example, then we can see whether the audience is as unbiased as, if I'm correct, you appear to suggest.
@ExEverest10 So what you are saying is that you are going to assume they are biased, and you aren't correct. The Bias of the audience is of such little relevance i have no opinion on it. I just think he makes a really good arguement. If you are hinging your belief concerning the audiences bias on the belief that he is making a poor arguement, then i say you have no case.
@monokhem It's argument. It depends on how you define assume, I've only seen a number of episodes [of this show], and of those I only recall segments, but from what I recall, a conservative making a civil and incisive argument at best got crickets, where a similar argument from a democrat/liberal got cheers and applause. This bias is best exemplified, I feel, by the 2nd rate Bush, and later, Palin bashing that Maher conducts, and the cheers that follow.
@monokhem The jokes are poor and repetitive; only a biased individual who wanted to encourage such a joke would clap at them, I feel.
And I'm sorry if the alleged bias of the audience is of such little relevance to you; I care about the audience's opinions, and care about them being correct/accurate/moral/etc, as a person who has to share the planet with them in years to come.
@monokhem I was saying that, ok, *even* if Andrew Sullivan was making a good argument [that I don't feel he is, but I'll assume he is], we still need to contrast this argument with one of similar logical strength made by a conservative, representing a right-wing opinion in order to find out whether the audience cares about good arguments, or the speaker sharing their opinions.
When has she EVER pulled the "i'm a woman dont attack me" card?? The one stance she HAS taken in standing up to her persicuters is for people attacking her children all the way down to her baby boy, WTF? How are they involved with her political stance? Sullivan is right here, all politicians are farcical -- ESPECIALLY ones like Palin who make you think they're down home friends while they're getting paid by giant corporations.
This is actually awesome on several different levels at once :)
First of all, he's dead on about Palin and history has proven him right. McCain can't hold his head up in Washington anymore. But I also love how he lets Naomi Klein know exactly what he thinks of her through body language alone. He leans right past her in order to make eye contact with Bill. The best part is where Naomi keeps "contributing" at the end! It's priceless! :)
Andrew! on friday june 4th you called the terrorists who attacked Israeli soldiers,"peace activists" even after the americans found out that they were belong to Jihad Islami terror who connected to Al-kaida-and their families confired that on their funerals.
In January 2009, Forbes magazine ranked Sullivan #19 on a list of "The 25 Most Influential Liberals In The U.S. Media." The magazine said that "he clings unconvincingly to the 'conservative' label even after his fervent endorsement of Obama. His advocacy for gay marriage rights puts him at odds with many on the right." It stated that Sullivan tends to see issues through an ideological lens based on his homosexuality, and that determines his writing. (wikipedia)
U dont have to like Palin, I think myself she is definitely overrated by the right, though i am a conservative, but what Sullivan does borders to virtual stalking...
Same thing could be said for Obama. I mean he doesn't even have a military record and people think Obama is qualified to be in charge of this countries military?
Unless she publicly announces she will not run for president, then for the sake of national security Sullivan and the rest of america with a decent IQ needs to press her lack of legitimacy to the point of pushing her hypothetical campaign to oblivion.
@MachShot1337 But to win, you have to pander to stupid people, like the tiny minds who admire Palin. Palindrones are absolutely immune to facts, logic, or any concept that she isn't a near perfect person.
good point, but the fact is the people wont listen anyway! they'll jus eat up the catchphrases and idealogical bullshit these people spout and vote for her anyway
His tone was completely warranted and appropriate given the circumstances. THe thought of giving the car keys over to that ridiculous woman trumped any need to be "polite".
I agree with Sullivan most of the time, but man, he's gotta let other people talk once in a while. It's called Real Time with Bill Maher and not Real Time with Andrew Sullivan for a reason.
Andrew Sullivan is right, but his complete and utter obsession with Palin betrays a disturbed mind. He's droned on and on in his blog about whether Palin's retarded kid was hers or her daughters. To my mind, this is like those idiots obsessively looking for Obama's birth certificate. A.S. has some value, but his mind is disordered. In short, he needs an editor....badly. He also needs a friend to calm his behavior, which is completely over the top.
I sort of agree but there were somehow the 4 people nominated for POTUS and VPOTUS should be some of the best our country has to offer. Is she even in the top half?
Short answer is: No, she's not. But then, the election was nine months ago, and her ticket lost. At what point does one finally drop it? Sullivan's consistently nutty obsession with her speaks less to her lack of qualifications for higher office than his precarious mental stability.
Andrew Sullivan's personal behavior has nothing to do with this. He was caught as an HIV+ person advertising for anonymous bareback orgies. So What? Palin is a lot more immature than that.
Can't say I'm too impressed with how he behaved during the election, calling her all sorts of names and generally freaking out. He was absolutely right on the larger question of her competence and everything else, but did he have to compromise his own integrity in the process?
Compromised his integrity?!? Are you kidding me? Andrew Sullivan was absolutely RIGHT to "freak out". John McCain put this country AT RISK by picking Sarah Palin to be his VP. And I, along with thousands of his regular readers, appreciated and applauded Andrew Sullivan's efforts to highlight it. I will forever be grateful to him for all of his work in exposing Sarah Palin.
no hes never voted, hes not a citizen. as for him blaming "Blacks" for prop 8 going through, in California almost 100% of the black vote was for prop 8, Andrew isnt the only person whos spoken about this fact, from MSNBC to Fox have mentioned this.
and finaly on his faith, Andrew is a very progressive christian, hes a conservative but his progressive faith often brings him under fire if you think hes a religious nut I challange you to provide me with a reference to back that up.
I don't know why you're telling me this because i somewhat agree with you. 70% of blacks voted to pass prop 8(which really sucks!)..but i also heard that pro-prop 8 people used part of Obama's answer on gay-marriage, which said he's against gay marriage, to help convince blacks to vote for it. I'm encouraged that prop 8 only passed by 4% points, i think it's the last time that will happen.
I also love and agree with A.S above. I think he makes a lot of sense.
Bottom line prop 8 passed because of the heavy add campaigning paid for by the church and the mormons. The people in favor of prop 8 did almost not community outreaching to get their point across.
If you're only getting one side of the story, chances are you'll be more incline to believe it.
Tell me if any of you agree okay? I got transferred from a regular high school to a continuation school because of low grades. I have received a high school diploma. I believe I'm more qualified to run for president then Palin. Let me end this by saying at least I can put together a coherent thought. LOL
American libertarianism is NOT traditional---it's a basterdized version based on social Darwinism. Andrew Sullivan is an idiot. He voted for Bu$h---TWICE!!! He's a hardcore Gay Catholic. What's that about? Sorry, Andy, but just writing a lot of words don't make what you're sayin' intelligent or logical.
Well since libertarianism in its very nature seeks to promote personal freedom through minimizing government interferences, I don't see what any of this has to do with Sullivan's religious or sexual preferences. The fact that he voted for Bush is of course relevant, but this makes him no more guilty than all the other conservatives who did exactly the same, and are now slamming Bush in order to promote McCain/Palin as mavericks.
Original libertarianism is about more than personal freedom alone; it's about equality too. Well, I'll leave the door open for Mr. Sullivan. However, he has a very real consistency problem. Hopefully he'll start tempering his reason with more realism. That goes for the all like-minded "conservatives," as well.
I don't know enough about him to know if he is an idiot or not (although voting for Bush twice is a pretty good indication of being an idiot), but what he said in this video is the absolute truth. McCain probably would have lost anyway, regardless of his pick of Palin for the VP slot. That said, he pretty much handed the election to Obama with this pick. It just says it all about his wisdom and decision making capability.
JayM0001: On another Maher "Real Time" show, Sullivan displayed an insane HATE for Noam Chomsky! What's that all about? Something just doesn't seem right with his "reasoning." Yes, what he says here is definitely true, but I don't trust him.
That's good to know - I thought I heard or read something here that led me to believe he voted for Bush.
As is my habit, I did a lot of homework on the candidates prior to the 2000 election. I would have voted for Bugs Bunny over Bush. He has been a mess since his school days.
@xlilxandyx, kurd is just a loudmouth partisan hack from the left. The right has partisan hacks, too. Partisan hackery is partisan hackery and kurd is a practitioner of the "fine" art.
At least Sullivan had the cubes to admit he was wrong.
@itpduder Everybody is wrong once in awhile---but voting for Bu$h proves that he's a fool---and that can't be learned or apologized away---it's like expressing regret for not believing in gravity. And the people that think he has "cubes" for waking up out of his delusional fortified stupidity---well---they're just in luv and want suck down his sack juice.
@kurd55, your homophobic attacks are ridiculous. What is your problem? Your profile states you are man in your 50's. And this is what a 50-ish man says? "they're just in luv and want suck down his sack juice?"
Really? You are not a serious person. Your type of partisanship and attacking behavior is a big part of the problem in the US today, and you illustrate this cancer on society quite well.
I find your idiocy simultaneously appalling and amusing.
@itpduder WOW! It took you a hole 2 seconds to respond! Do you write the crux of your crap in Word then quickly cut-n-paste? Get a life teabagger---quit stalking me---PLEASE! It all fits a pattern---next you'll be spamming my profile like the stupid fool that you are. (AND---aha! I knew you were in luv with <3Andrew<3---LOL---stalkers are so unstable and predictable.) Tata, teabagger. =)
@itpduder I don't think that's true. But I wouldn't care even if it was true. If you voted for Bu$h---EVER---you're a complete dumbass fool---that's the bottom line---PERIOD.
@itpduder HA-HAA! The man you admire and stick up for so much voted for Bu$h---the very paradigm of a fool. But go ahead, hick, lick his balls for all I care---teabagger. Lol!
@kurd55, I never said I admired Sullivan nor am I a tea-party activist. I merely stated a fact. Sullivan did not vote for Bush in '04. You take that as sucking up to Sullivan and assert that I am a tea-party activist.
You are a dolt. You don't like facts. You are very similar to many tea-party activists in that you are more concerned with partisanship than facts.
@kurd55, you have no idea what sticking up for anything means if that was a hearty defense of the man. And then you foully state that I want to suck his "dick?" Because I stated a fact? You are hilarious! As to tea-party or the epithet of "tea-bagger", no, I am not and do not appreciate the insinuation.
I suppose I should call you a socialist? To call you a socialist is using the same logic. You are not a bright man.
@pwn4lifez "Social darwinism" is defined as "a 19th-century theory, inspired by Darwinism, by which the social order is accounted as the product of natural selection of those persons best suited to existing living conditions and in accord with which a position of laissez-faire is advocated." Look it up.
For a guy who labels himself a conservative, Andrew Sullivan had me with him every step of the way in this episode, on everything from Sarah Palin to religion.
except he's annoying and abrasive and fastidious to a fault (probly an OCD handwasher) and he's a Conservative who blames poor people for wanting to be upwardly mobile. As tho: How dare they try to live above their means! when all we are bombarded with 24/7 thru advertising and the implicit "programming" of happy wealthy sit-com characters who never even take a shit is the idea that personal wealth = personal worth. It's called PREDATORY LENDING for a reason.
Since the basic guiding principle of libertarianism is "leave me the hell alone", I think most people probably can have the word libertarian attached to whatever their ideology is... and that did used to be true of most Republicans.
Obama/Biden or Mccain/Palin. They are both owned by the same interests. Dont Americans realize this yet?
As far as the constitution is concerned, Obama and Mccain are no different on foreign policy. Same Nuclear first strike talk against iran, both will keep bases in Iraq, Both will keep troops in afghanistan.
Both are supporting Georgia with your tax money, and advising them to buy from American Weapons Companies!
yea, your tax money is going to cheney, with obama or Mccain!
Of course you have read Obama's books right? bc if you hadn't, you would just be advertising your lack of credibility and integrity.
And mind you, this comment comes from someone who has voted for Nader in the past.
Obama is the real deal, and in being real, he has his flaws, but to equate Obama and McCain is to advertise one's ignorance, and we can't afford to let conspiratorial nihilism go unanswered at this critical juncture.
LISTEN UP & TAKE HEART! - Obama has the largest donor base in the history of US elections! - Obama set fundraising record for single month AUG08 - 66million. Avg gift <$100. No PAC/Lobbyist money! - Active US troops donate to Obama 6:1 over McCain. SEE: opensecrets. org/news/2008/08/troops-deployed-abroad-give-61. html - How will the Obama tax plan affect you? (vs McCain's) SEE: alchemytoday. com/obamataxcut/ DONATE TODAY also, Wasilla: 7000. Alaska: 683000. Chicago: 2.8 million!
IRAQ: Obama didn't drive that bus into the ditch, & it's damn hard to get a bus out of a ditch once some fool has driven it into it. Read Obama's full 2002 Speech Against Iraq Invasion - full text HERE:
U r one of those overly paranoid black&white gloom&doom "thinkers" so full of pride & short on subtlety that u ridiculously conflate Obama and McCain - "FISA this" & "CFR that"!
U ADVERTISE UR IGNORANCE and seek to steer public opinion with your half-baked understanding and a messiah/martyr complex.
idealism must be met with pragmatism, or it is naivete'.
Do not conflate Obama with other memebers of CFR. It's a COUNCIL ON FOREIGN RELATIONS - You can't shape policy & not be on it. DUH!
I find it funny how you brought up the troop support for Obama.
Do you know whot he troops supported in the primaries? I bet you have no idea until i tell you.
Ron Paul... He got more donations from active duty military personnel than any other candidate on either side COMBINED. Obama + mccain + romney + Clinton + Biden etc. combine all of their primary military donations together, and Ron Pauls' total trumped them all put together.
Ron Paul CANNOT WIN. Plus, he's an isolationist who put out racist gay-bashing newsletters in the 90's.
SEE: cnn. com/2008/POLITICS/01/10/paul. newsletters/index. html
Also SEE:

She's a Paul supporter who's now for OBAMA. Her argument: 270 electoral votes r needed to win which RP cannot get. U don't need to even like Obama, but it's a vote to keep McCain out of the White House. Think the election's already decided? Get an absentee ballot (hand-counted).
Ron Paul's platform was simply "The Constitution". You know, That thing troops swear an oath to defend.
Obama and Mccain are cut from the same cloth bro... i know you probably wont wake up to this, and you think supporting obama is making some sort of statement... it's not... your buying into the media's "party politics" game.
America will be bankrupt soon, and Obama does not have a solution... you might think he does because he's a well-spoken man but, he speaks nothing of Inflation and the FEDS blatant violation of constitutional economics.
I suggest you worry less about voting, and worry more about investing in gold, silver and food.
Just my 2 cents. A depression is most definitely on the way.
LOOK, u traveling salesman of 3rd kind, w/ ur annoying cut&paste spiel that no one wants to hear. Get a fucking job & adjust ur medication. U thrive on the delusion that U have it ALL figured out. If u haven't read Obama's books, then STFU, u sad hypocrite hiding in ur basement w/ a 4-10 & a shit ton of ramen noodles.
"A depression is most definitely on the way." Notice how u cling to certain doom bc ur little brain can't handle the ultimate truth of modern physics - UNCERTAINTY. Deal with it.
GOD it feels good to hear people speak out about Palin. It gives me hope that there are enough smart people left in this country. The McCain campaign saw the 85,000 in Denver, went "we're gonna lose by 10 points," & made a desperation move hoping that stupid people would fall for it. And shockingly, it worked for a while. She's not very smart, she's a pathological liar, & she knows absolutely nothing about the economy or foreign policy. Sounds good 2 me!
Hmmm...edited highlights anyone? I mean the clip is called Andrew Sullivan on Palin for chrissake. If you find Sullivan EXTREMELY annoying then why did u select the clip?
I agree with Sullivan only roughly half the time and I find his "sophisticated" Christianity insufferable but he is right on about Palin...her candidacy was the most insane anything in the history of anything...just embarrassing.

(wikipedia)

How does one see foreign policy issues through an ideological lens based on his homosexuality. That claim is ridiculous.

Is she even in the top half?
yukonherb 2 years ago
Short answer is: No, she's not. But then, the election was nine months ago, and her ticket lost. At what point does one finally drop it? Sullivan's consistently nutty obsession with her speaks less to her lack of qualifications for higher office than his precarious mental stability.

Andrew Sullivan's personal behavior has nothing to do with this. He was caught as an HIV+ person advertising for anonymous bareback orgies. So What? Palin is a lot more immature than that.
FreedomUSA1 2 years ago
Can't say I'm too impressed with how he behaved during the election, calling her all sorts of names and generally freaking out. He was absolutely right on the larger question of her competence and everything else, but did he have to compromise his own integrity in the process?
voyowee 2 years ago
Compromised his integrity?!? Are you kidding me? Andrew Sullivan was absolutely RIGHT to "freak out". John McCain put this country AT RISK by picking Sarah Palin to be his VP. And I, along with thousands of his regular readers, appreciated and applauded Andrew Sullivan's efforts to highlight it. I will forever be grateful to him for all of his work in exposing Sarah Palin.

I don't trust Sullivan for these reasons:
Strike 1. He voted for Bu$h once.
Strike 2. He's a religious idiot.
Strike 3. He blamed the blacks for Prop 8 passing even though they make up only 10% of the electorate in California.
Sorry, Andy---it's time for you to hit the fuckin' showers and shut the fuck up! Game over!

andrew sullivam isnt he british? if yes he cannot vote.
mininairs 3 years ago
He's naturalized American citizen, means he can vote. He also voted for Bush twice, i think.
ver506 3 years ago
no hes never voted, hes not a citizen. as for him blaming "Blacks" for prop 8 going through, in California almost 100% of the black vote was for prop 8, Andrew isnt the only person whos spoken about this fact, from MSNBC to Fox have mentioned this.
and finaly on his faith, Andrew is a very progressive christian, hes a conservative but his progressive faith often brings him under fire if you think hes a religious nut I challange you to provide me with a reference to back that up.
Elcristoph 3 years ago
I don't know why you're telling me this because i somewhat agree with you. 70% of blacks voted to pass prop 8(which really sucks!)..but i also heard that pro-prop 8 people used part of Obama's answer on gay-marriage, which said he's against gay marriage, to help convince blacks to vote for it. I'm encouraged that prop 8 only passed by 4% points, i think it's the last time that will happen.
I also love and agree with A.S above. I think he makes a lot of sense.
ver506 3 years ago
Bottom line prop 8 passed because of the heavy add campaigning paid for by the church and the mormons. The people in favor of prop 8 did almost not community outreaching to get their point across.
If you're only getting one side of the story, chances are you'll be more incline to believe it.

American libertarianism is NOT traditional---it's a basterdized version based on social Darwinism. Andrew Sullivan is an idiot. He voted for Bu$h---TWICE!!! He's a hardcore Gay Catholic. What's that about? Sorry, Andy, but just writing a lot of words don't make what you're sayin' intelligent or logical.
kurd55 3 years ago
Well since libertarianism in its very nature seeks to promote personal freedom through minimizing government interferences, I don't see what any of this has to do with Sullivan's religious or sexual preferences. The fact that he voted for Bush is of course relevant, but this makes him no more guilty than all the other conservatives who did exactly the same, and are now slamming Bush in order to promote McCain/Palin as mavericks.
miltonheck 3 years ago 3
At least Sullivan recognizes the flaw in having supported Bush, whereas the rest of these people are simply trying to win another election.
miltonheck 3 years ago 2
Should have threw some quotes on that use of the word "maverick." You know, for accuracy purposes.
miltonheck 3 years ago
Original libertarianism is about more than personal freedom alone; it's about equality too. Well, I'll leave the door open for Mr. Sullivan. However, he has a very real consistency problem. Hopefully he'll start tempering his reason with more realism. That goes for the all like-minded "conservatives," as well.
kurd55 3 years ago
He can't vote. And he didn't support Bush in 2004. Not to be a major apologist for him but those are the facts.
suugakublues 3 years ago
That's true.
kurd55 3 years ago
I don't know enough about him to know if he is an idiot or not (although voting for Bush twice is a pretty good indication of being an idiot), but what he said in this video is the absolute truth. McCain probably would have lost anyway, regardless of his pick of Palin for the VP slot. That said, he pretty much handed the election to Obama with this pick. It just says it all about his wisdom and decision making capability.
JayM0001 3 years ago
JayM0001: On another Maher "Real Time" show, Sullivan displayed an insane HATE for Noam Chomsky! What's that all about? Something just doesn't seem right with his "reasoning." Yes, what he says here is definitely true, but I don't trust him.
kurd711 3 years ago
He didn't vote for Bush twice. Opposed him in 2004 and has been sounding the horn on Bush's incompetence longer than many liberals.
xlilxandyx 3 years ago
That's good to know - I thought I heard or read something here that led me to believe he voted for Bush.

JayM0001 3 years ago
@xlilxandyx, kurd is just a loudmouth partisan hack from the left. The right has partisan hacks, too. Partisan hackery is partisan hackery and kurd is a practitioner of the "fine" art.

How are they on the same page you may ask?
They both will prolonge the unconstutional war in Iraq(Obama only wants to move some troops into Afghanistan, and expand the war front).
They both are willing to pre-emptively attack Iran
They will both stay in afghanistan.
They both support the bailout of Wall street.
They both supported FISA
They both have staunch connections to the Globalist CFR.
I could go on, and on, and on.
