Jeff was one of nicest and most fun people you could ever meet. There is still a tournament held in Tacoma, Washington held in his name each year I believe called "The Mattingly Swiss" which is a 5 person mens and 5 person womens swiss format event. It's sold out every year. He's remembered and honored to this day.
I forget the date/year; lthough I clearly remember the announcement as if it were yesterday: it was during a weekly PBA broadcast I watched every week back then: the first thing that came on the screen was a tribute: Mattingly's pic and his birth/death years, just as would appear on a sports' broadcast whenever any athlete of the sport has passed away.
Dear Mrbowling300, I know you dont me but my name is lori mattingly. I am the daughter of the late Jeff Mattingly. The correct date that my father passed away on was Mar. 15th 1987. I was 10.5 yrd old when he passed. He was 35yrs old at the time. This year will be 23yrs since he has left us. My dad was quite the bowler. I toured with him from 1976-1979. It was a great part of my life, that i will always remember. :)
just saw this guy bowling against pete webber in 1982 on espn classic. never heard of him before today but he sparked my interest. sorry you lost pops at such a young age, that sucks. how did your father pass if you don't mind me asking ?
@smoot0420 ...Hey smooth this 1976hiphopgirl1 the same person just so you don't get confused. I couldn't remember my password to my orginal username so had to do a new one. But anyways to answer your question, my dad was driving home one night from work and he had been drinking too much that night and decided that he was going to drive home. Well while driving home on the highway towards his house, he hit a guard rail and went over, and ended up flying out the back window.
@smoot0420 continued.. and he wasn't wearing a seat belt, that's why he flew out the window, and ended up passing away on march 15th 1987 at 6 am in the morning. I didn't get too see him before he passed, his side of the family said that i wouldn't of have reconized him because of the impact from the crash.
@smoot0420 Yes a seatbelt would have saved his life and he probably would still be here today. But what can you do now, nothing. He will always be in my heart and i will always miss him very much. :)
@1976hiphopgirl Dear Lori, I'm sorry that it took this long to realize that you posted this about your father. I was a big fan of his back in the day. I will never forget when they mentioned his death on the pro bowlers tour, it was shocking to hear. I believe I've posted all the matches of him bowling that I have. I'm sure your honored that people in the bowling community still remember Jeff. He was a great bowler! God Bless!
My Name is Lori Mattingly. The late Jeff Mattingly is my dad. (aka-the white whale). I toured with my dad jeff and my mom from 1976-1979. My dad sadley passed away on March 15th 1987. He was 35yrs old. He was born May of 1951. I just want too thank you for remembering my father and for watching him when he was on the pba Tour. It's nice to know that there are others who remember him. :)
I now retract one part of my statement from a year ago: specifically, the "bowling Perfect Games up there now" part.
Reason being, of course, that there IS NO "up there."
My apologies for posting that fairy-tale bible cr*p.
I've been cured since back when I had posted that.
Denounced that silly hullabaloo.
It's wonderful to accept and live by reality, by rationality, rather than clinging to fairy tales about some hippie popping out from a virgins belly and walking on water, etc.
It's not my fault you can't deal with facts of real life (and therefore you have to live your pathetic life clinging to fairy tales, thinking you hear voices from a cloud.)
The only thing more pathetic than people believing in fairy tales is people that feel it's their responsibility to educate and chastise other people about their faith in something that can be neither proven or disproven. Not sure a discussion about a dead bowler with his daughter involved is the appropiate forum to rant about your newly found information on God. Congrats, you might be You Tubes asshole of the year. Now go jump of a bridge to spare us any more of ur babble.

I still have my Earl Anthony, Ebonite Mag 11 ball. Looks like what he's using here. Gone too soon for sure.
PaBasser 2 years ago
Two great bowlers, both gone prematurely: Mattingly in a car wreck, Anthony by a heart attack.
They're bowling Perfect Games up there now. LOL
McRat1968 3 years ago
Earl died by falling down a flight of stairs I believe.
Wolfman12395 3 years ago
It was a heart attack which caused it as he was on that stairway. Not a fatal slip and fall.
I remember the report.
McRat1968 3 years ago
McRat, could you tell me where I could find this report? I'd like to read it.
mrwrister 3 years ago
I didn't mean "report" as in the Police Report or anything.
I meant to say the article I read in the paper back then.
Was in the S.F. Chronicle, our family's morning paper. Don't recall a date; sorry.
McRat1968 3 years ago
Oh ok, thank you for responding.

I had no idea about Mattingly's death until seeing this. Sad to hear. I, too, liked both bowlers.

Jeff Mattingly died at 36 in a car crash.

If Mattingly was 30 as Chris Shenkel R.I.P. stated in this clip and he died when he was 36 as you remember then wouldn't the year he died be 1988?
BIGGREENLEAF1 2 years ago
you are correct....1988 was the year.

Mr. Anthony continued the tradition of dominating lefties. Mattingly looks as if he spent too much time at the pre-game taco bar.

The way mattingly bowls he looks clueless, Funny though :D

Thanks for uploading this, as much as I like Earl Anthony, I also like Jeff Mattingly a lot too.
