  • I am in the USA experimenting with a waste oil burner at the moment. I have built a babington style burner. Yours looks much simpler. I am wanting to heat my pool. I tried gutting an old pool heater and scavenged about 5 gallon/minute flow off of it--was only able to raise the water temperature out about 15 degrees over what was going in--not enough to heat the pool. I am looking for better ways to transfer the heat to the water and do it quickly with more flow--any success on yours?

  • @stepheng1967 i havent gotten any further with mine as its summer here (35°C+ days and fire restrictions) can you tell me what the temp difference is in °C (cause °F is a very hard way to work out heat applied to water cause its not a temp scale based around water) and i'll tell you haw many watts you were getting into your water

  • @samoht1977 i dont. its drip fed. and the heat rising up the flue draws in the air at the base to burn it cleanly

  • @HomeDistiller Impresive! A water jacket on the outside would be an efficient way of heating the water.and a tapered flue might be more efficient still. like a "thermette" I quess you vary the oil flow rate by raising and lowering the oil container.you would not want to run out of water in the jacket but if it was at the level of the pool it would fix that. Now you,ve got me thinking ,thanks

    It's a good design this.

    Have you seen the vids by ozzurit I think it is. He uses this principle which I think originally was a "Mother Earth" design for a home heater.

    A guy called Rodger sanders also worked and developed this concept.

    I'm going to try one of these for a small heater for an hydronic system for my home.

    My wife bought a stainless steel Cutlery drainer home that was full of neat holes and the first thing i thought of was how perfect it was for a burner. $3

  • I'm building a heater for my pool atm. Just finished the burner tonight and the basic concept i want to go with. I looked at the commercial heaters and worked out what i want to give me the heat rise etc will be around 200kw output or 20L of WVO an hour.

    I'm going to use a radiator above the flame height of the burner and have cold air dilution to lower the gas temp.

    Are you thinking to use this design and enclose the flue pipe with a water Jacket?

    Where in Oz are you?

  • @glumpy10 wow 200kw???? the pump you would need to stop flash boiling would be huge and the size of the burner would also be huge, that would raise a 20,000 ltr pool by 1°C every 7 minutes are you sure you need 200kw? i will be making a kind of "pot belly" burner with a coil around the outside (2 really, one short to maintain a temp, and one long to raise the temp) so it will also act as a patio heater

    I have a large pool that is about 75K Land a 60m Sq surface area. I'm in Sydney.

    I wanted to be able to get it up to temp in no more than 12 hours. The burner I have built will walk 200Kw in, I'm just a bit wary of the ability of the radiator I want to use as the HE to absorb that energy without boiling as you say. I'll be using a spa pump so flow won't be an issue.

    What about putting the copper inside your flue or running tubes up and down the length? maybe more efficent?

  • @glumpy10 and things like solar and a good blanket to keep to heating energy down. maybe maintain a minimum temp so you rise time/temp isnt as much??

  • @HomeDistiller although it also depend on if you want to burn 200kw of oil or put 200kw into the water. the first is easy the later not so much lol.. i like your vids btw i subbed

  • @glumpy10 im not even sure a spa heater will handle it 200kw will raise one ltr of water by 47.8°C in one second i would want no soldered joints in the direct flame path, maybe make a multi layer copper manifold and even then you would want a large surface area to prevent fast oxide build up and the small holes. thats why i will put my pipes on the outside. burning oil and water REALLY dont mix well, unless you want a 10mtr high flame. i think you might want to look at heat retention methods

    If figured it to be around 20.

  • @glumpy10 that i cant tell you lol, i just googled amount of watts needed to raise 1 leter of water 1degC. To heat one 1 kg of water 1C requires 4186 J and a J=1 watt per second so 4186 watts will raise a ltr of water 1 deg C per second

  • Can you show us what is inside the tube please. how do you light the burner?

  • @Hamish121212 there is nothing inside the tube just the end of the copper pipe to input the oil, and i light it with a gas torch

  • Is there much of a smell burning the veg oil?

  • @redneckscorner only a little when its warming up, less smoke and smell than a wood fire ;)
