1 Said undermines his whole Orientalism argument by doing exactly what he accuses ‘the West’ of doing. He makes vast generalisations to construct a ‘popular culture’ within which the west is completely anti-Islam, or anti-Eastern. I think most 10 year olds could probably grasp that the Simpson’s clip at 6:00 is being ironic – exposing large generalisations, not promoting them.
2 To suggest that all Americans share the same views, and especially that Americans, British, French, Germans etc. etc. share the same desire for colonialism – based on a misunderstanding of ‘The East’ – is blind hypocrisy.
The referece to the opening track of Aladdin is brilliant. it would have been even more shocking if they used the original verse that was: Original first verse (1992-93): Oh I come from a land, from a faraway place Where the caravan camels roam Where they cut off your ear If they don't like your face It's barbaric, but hey, it's home
I detest people who don't consider the OK City bombing an actual terrorist attack, simply because it was carried out by a white American ostensibly acting out of (his own skewed version of) right-wing principles. These insidious sympathizers are the same folks who also don't consider the guy who crashed his airplane into an IRS office building a terrorist. Right-wing terrorism is still terrorism, just like left-wing terrorism or terrorism carried out by brown/foreign people.
@namenderkrieg you're close, but not close enough. did you really believe the whole OK city bombing was produced by a right wing American individual? ha! that is just as ridiculous as the official explanation for the collapse of the WTC tower 7.

@DrummerTurner I totally agree. And when I make these arguments at my university, I'm called a racist.

@DrummerTurner That is not Said's argument, little child. Read Orientalism first.

@DrummerTurner Again, Said never said that "all Americans" are such and such.
