I hate to rain on the Flea lovers parade (I love Fleas playing by the way and thats why I know this) but Squarepusher is actually Flea's favorite bass player.
I dont think ive read so many ignorant comments about bass playing as i have on one page. Slap a gimmick and looks better? Flea a better bass player? Virtuosity boring? You guys are upset he isnt playing typical grooves. Its like human beings have lost their ears, and fitted them to only hear what has become familiar. This man has done more with a bass guitar then any other player before him in his career, and i think its lovely to hear just his solo playing.
@BaxterD ...thank you for saying that...holy shit..Mr. Jenkison lays down more grooves in this 4 minute song than 6 bass players combined...FRETLESS even...keep listening to poop and wash down hill with what you call "mainstream" music...long live innovation
@leoguittarman Ever heard of Jaco Pastorius? Victor Wooten? Marcus Miller? Stanley Clarke? If you like shredding dudes you should check out Wooten, but he's different from many shredders in one way: He's not sloppy, there's a groove in it and there's also melody. Hmm. But I'm not saying Flea's untalented.
Bass is not ment to be played that fast. Bass is your soul. Hectic soul will hardly find harmony, too fast bass player will only ruin the awesome sound.
@Obiwan198 there isn't a set method of playing an instrument. your prejudice that an instrument is to be played in one way limits the infinite possibility of getting unexpected sounds out of the instrument.
@jeehyuck01 yeah, there are infinite possibilities how to play the bass. But it's architecture and sound kind of define how to play it. Heavy strings = longer notes. High pickup sensitivity = no sliding over strings. Low attack = soft playing. etc etc. Squarepusher is the best bass guitarist i have ever heard about, but sometimes he's just hurting the sound.
@Obiwan198 yeah! the only reason i don't play that fast is because it shouldn't be! I totally COULD play just like squarepusher but i choose not to out of respect for the instrument.
@jimclashair I'M A JOKE? R U SERIOUS? I RESPECT THE BASS GUITAR MORE THAN YOU KNOW. I PRACTICE TO PLAY FAST AND THEN CHOOSE NOT TO OUT OF THE RESPECT FOR THE INSTRUMENT SPEED ISNT EVERYTHIN I CAN PLAY THE PENTATONIC SCALE REALLY SLOW BUT IT SOUNDS GOOD i love youtube thanks for noticing my sarcasm
started well but the slap is just moronic. WHY?????
Slap ALWAYS looks better than it sounds. Idiots in the audience respond to it because it looks cool, just like they love a fast bongo solo. And idiots also whoop and clap when they think it is expected of them, but is this slap gimmick really a good use of this man's phenomenal talents? He could be uplifting our spirits or musically transporting us to other dimensions! this video is NAAM show music and it should stay there.
No doubt that he was a bit sloppy on this track. But it's like watching a master push himself to the limits... I think he played this one better on the Culture Show... But still just another rendition. Most of his live performances have great variations on bass. It's what makes him interesting as a musician... Being highly improvisational and at times improving upon the original tracks. Like most artists would think, a painting is never truly complete.
Quite a rendition, though its a shame that he rushes it enough to get sloppy. I love squarepusher but some of his solo bass pieces fall too far into the "Look what I can do!" pattern that can make any degree of virtuosity boring.
@Jon36992002 It's more interesting to me watching a virtuoso spend 5 minutes playing at the absolute edge of their ability just to see such a great mind in process. I'd rather see than a polished track played exactly the same as it is on an album for umpteenth time. No mistakes, no innovation. Also, it's not that sloppy at any given point; people are hypercritical.
@Jon36992002 I agree. It's clearly an interesting piece, but he does rush it. It's like that on his Solo Electric Bass album too. Not sure what that's about.
@Jon36992002 You can definitely tell what he's going for, but it sounds like a mixture of technique and not having the right equipment that's holding him back
@Jon36992002 I think you are mistaking genius for "sloppyness". Yes and Look and listen to what he can do! And what the fuck you think is boring ?????? Your comment is boring
It's an electric bass guitar. Normally an electric bass guitar is only 4 or 5 strings, but as you can see he has more, which allows him to reach higher pitch ranges similar to a standard guitar.

Yeah, the melody is a bit lost in this one, which is a shame. This is the composition he did on the BBC Culture Show a couple of years back.
