  • I feel sad that music like this isn't around much. So much unnecessary and uninspiring crap these days, but at least there's people that post these things up for people to see.

  • Great

  • saw and heard this years ago and spent then until now hearing this go around my head going crazy coz i needed to know where to hear it again !

  • Another here as well, 10Klaw...

  • Another Aussie here wiping away tears.

  • Que cambios, que -GUITARREO con mas sentimiento, que contraste al final con el silofón, MIKE OLFIELD un -MOZART - del siglo xx

  • I have been looking for this for years, thank so much, used to watch this as a filler on ABC tv as a kid. never got it out of my head..awesome

  • well, it IS on DVD already (Mike Oldfield - Elements).

  • Yeah I agree, definately one of the more inspirational movies I watched all those years ago... if on DVD I'd buy today!!

  • @zephranna01 I hope you live in someplace beautiful, sunny, and within at most a half hours drive from our primordial home (I'm sure it's changed quite a bit since our ancestors). As I write this it's almost the middle of the night here in the U.S. so I wish you a good afternoon.

  • @zephranna01 Are you Italian?

  • Is that Pete Conrad's bald head I see?

  • Oh thank you so much for posting this! the part from 4.09 was indeed played on Australian ABC TV years ago as filler it always made and still makes me cry. Like the safe return scene in Apollo 13. Great music, human endeavour and creativity and courage and the link back to Hiawatha true native American hero with the unique and unbelievable Maddy Prior to complete it all for the 15 year old I was and 50 year old I am ... Oh my

  • @dm3830 so im not the only one brought to tears by the beauty of part 4 then!!

  • Michael Oldfield Thank you for being alive in my lifetime.

Forgive my silly America for not fully appreciating your

music. May a diseased cockroach's dung eternally infest

the nasal passages of all commercial radio's station

managers. Bless all you MO fans!

  • @fame1910bbcrown - Bwa-hahahaha ... I work for radio 4EB and we do Oldfield all the time !!!

  • Back in 1980, ABC tv in Australia used an except of this from the start of Incantations Pt 4 (is that Mariner 1 over Mars?) right through to the Saturn V launch as a filler between programmes. Watching and listening to Oldfield's brilliance tonight brings the same awe and wonder I felt as a kid then at school. Thanks for posting, I always wondered where it originally came from.

  • questa musica mi fa venire i brividi, nel senso buono pero'.. allucinante..

  • Absolutely THE highlight of any Mike LP. So much emotion...

  • The last of his great concept albums, the likes of which, I fear, will never be repeated or bettered.

  • @thecraftypeewhit they weren't concept albums. they're just long songs.

  • @cbnamyah

How can anyone say that Oldfield's early music wasn't concept.

Tubular Bells was ground breaking, Hergest Ridge, Ommadawn and Incantations were all modern classical and still hold their own.

  • Brilliant video only matched by the quality of the tunes. Have spent many late nights watching this with a large glass of wine. Superb stuff!

  • From the media these days, all we seem to get is negativety beamed directly into our brains. War, death, broken societies etc. It gets you down.

And then surfing around YouTube tonight watching various talented folk playing Mike Oldfield tunes I remembered buying a VHS tape of Space Movie 18 years ago.

And having watched these clips again I suddenly feel as though my soul has been cleansed, that there is hope for humanity after all! We need more stuff like this on TV. It's inspirational.

  • @mankywomb nah because most people dont care about science and technology, they are more interested to watch paris hilton and jersey shore.

  • @mankywomb Thank you, pal. You made me feel cleansed, indeed. And thank you whobearUK for your video. It means a lot for me :)

  • The music is 10 +,born-64

  • "Worlds will not war over Space"

  • The "Hymn to Cynthia" part (including Pierre Moerlen's vibraphones starting at 4:08 in this video and the finale) is among my all-time favourite pieces of music and I have a specially ripped MP3 just of it to listen when I'm away from home. There are people who consider "Incantations" boring or too long, but certainly not me!

  • is a little bit repetitive, and didn't have much success like the other works before, the people tastes were changing they prefer shorter themes, the real change would become with PLATINUM, shorter themes in order to defeat the great fashion in those times, punk music.........

  • I was 8 when it came out...

I feel all my childood and its dreams in this video.

  • Jeez - I was the same age. I vividly remember watching this film transfixed. The music and visuals just flicked a switch on in my mind. : ).

  • His guitar is amazing

  • I've been a great 'fan' of Mike Oldfield's music since Tubular Bells came out. This is one of my favourite guitar riffs, along with the ending of Ommadawn

  • Don't forget "First Excursion" from "Boxed". What he does there with that guitar is simply mind-numbing! Very Jimi Hendrix-like, but I have no doubt that Jimi himself would applaud.

  • Longfellow of course utilised the Finnish Kalevala for his work

Quote "Finnish epic poem Kalevala. Longfellow made no secret of the fact that he had used the meter of the Kalevala" Unquote

    Nice

  • One of the best in the Music show!!!

  • i love the who song but especially love the female vocals after 7 minutes. It's most uplifting.

  • The singer is Maddy Prior, she is the lead singer from a 40 year old folk rock group called Steeleye Span. She has a very distinctive voice.

  • Thank you I appreciate the information :)

I will check out more Maddy Prior and the Steeleye Span.

  • Wow !!! I can finally watch this video after so many years .......... THANKS !!

    I LOVE this song

  • you should get the live album "Mike oldfield: Exposed". Its got tubular bells and incantations (full songs) on it. Its an awesome cd

  • "Incantations" is somewhat abridged on "Exposed", but it's still a great performance. In that album, however, I prefer "Tubular Bells", which was absolutely fabulous, with a harder, rockier feel than the original.

  • Brilliant. Love watching the full vid on DVD with surround on!!

Love all Mikes work, but the sextion just as he jums of the steps is one of my all-time fave bits of music.

  • It's trancending anything created by human mind on Earth

  • Great music....great clip...great Oldfield...

  • Este extracto de la pelicula space movie esta mejor que la misma movie.

excelente aporte, que parte del incantation es con la que empieza esta segunda parte del video, por que es de lo mejor que ha compuesto oldfield.

  • Touches the soul. !! XX

  • sencillamente, precioso :), el conjunto en sí, imágenes, la mejor música de un gran genio, Mike oldfield,..qué más se puede pedir

  • Incantations is one of Mike's fantastic albums, it is still my No. 1 after those years and still has a lot to say. When I listen to it, after few minutes I am taken into another world. Being Mike's fan since my childhood I still don't have enough of this album. Space movie is also beautiful footage of the Universe. :)

  • when some people listen to this music, they cant see why people like it so much, but this kind of music compared to hip hop, and the such, inspires the mind to think outside of the normal human carnal thought, its intelligent music.

  • It's rather "spiritual" than intelligent music.

    Regards,

    V

  • well put

  • I know the intention!

Good luck and God Bless you bro! ;)

    Kind regards,

    Vanesa

  • As an Atheist "spiritual" goes hand in hand with intelligence.

  • I'd say that "spiritual" goes hand in hand with knowlegde or wisdom rather than intelligence :)

    Kind regards,

    Vanesa

  • I would have to disagree. "intelligent music" I assume he/she meant as music that means something, that was put together intelligently. Knowledge is so subjective, you can know a ton of information and still be ignorant about a vast many things. I wouldn't associate it with spirit.

  • Well, so as to be even... let's say that Mike Olfield is an inteligente & spiritual musician who creates spiritual music :)

    Love,

    Vanesa

  • Or, who creates spiritual and intelligent music.

  • Yes! although if it's spiritual then it's intelligent by an implicit definition... I guess :)

  • @janitorbl Compared to anything mostly.

  • whobearuk: I am new to DSL and did not realize there were so many Mike Oldfield videos out there. Many blessings to you - your's are the best

  • This is still soooo good, I cannot sit still while listening, how silly is this?

  • That's what I like about Mike Oldfield - too many of my favourite songs are over too quickly!

  • Yeah, Mike lets ya listen awille!

  • Spot on I say.

  • great music

  • How to Thank you?

  • ABSOLUTE QUALITY,no more to be said etc.

  • Absolutely wonderful.. And I can almost not believe that the entire Incantations in concert (1979?) has now been posted to YouTube. I never knew this existing in video and it is just incredible to see Mike Oldfield executing those original vibratos as he could do with such musical precision in those days.

  • Brilliant! Yes, Maddy Pryor and Sally Oldfield double the vocals here. This music, set to the visuals of space are incredible. The entire clip can be found on the Mike Oldfield DVD Elements.

  • I agree, I loved this clip on late 70's - early 80's ABC. I remember running home after school Mondays to Thursdays (not shown on Fridays) to catch it between 3:30 & 4pm - I loved so much - It fuelled my imagination & gave me the scope to imagine a world & universe bigger than my child's mind. Married with Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" series these events were cerebral turning points in my early life. Great to see it again, thanks for sharing.

P.S. Love Maddy Pryor's voice too!!

  • This is the music that made me "discover" Mike all the way back in the 70's when the ABC played it as a filler. It still produces an emotional response, even after all this time. Awesome stuff.

  • You too huh? Loved it. Took me years to find out what the music was. You'll notice the ABC version, used as filler in the early evenings in 1978/79/80, doesn't synchronise the images with the music in the same places as this original cut does. They must have reedited it for thie own interest (the music used to conclude with the splashdown of the return capsule into the ocean, followed by the white ABC logo, remember?).

  • INCREDIBLE, WONDERFULL, CRAZY, PERFECT!!

    Obra maestra del maestro

    Solo escuchar

    Solo sentir

El disco habla por si solo

    El resto de comentarios sobran

  • this reminds me of Amarok, similar pounding beats and crescendos.

  • I read dreamcatcher (stephan king) while playing this whole album again and again and it really really goes its strange.

  • were you high as well?? :)

  • uh! so good!

Maddy Prior singing - makes me goosey all over! :D

  • not only maddy prior but also sally oldfield and the queens college girl choir

  • I've never listened to Incantations before but I could swear I've heard this bit...

Anyway, awe-inspiring stuff, Mike is one of, if not THE best musician alive today.

  • I think the stuff at the 4 minute mark is what they put on his best-of album to represent Incantations, maybe you've heard it from that?

  • one of the best melodies ever in this track. i just love it. thanks for sharing with us.

  • Beautiful.

  • This is the section I remember the most. I have been looking for this movie for years. I couldn't, for the life of me, remember what it was called. I was a very young kid when this debuted. Thanks for posting it!

  • It is beautiful and well chosen footage, but as I remember it there was additional vocals by maddy prior at the beginning of this piece. I would love to know what happened to the original version and asume that the recording was discarded. Does anyone out there have it?

  • Thanks for adding this to YouTube - my favourite part of Incantations. I wouldn't say this album was the last great one, what about Amarok? Many fans think that's his greatest achievement so far. I hear his next album will be going back to hs 70s roots of symphonic progressive rock.

  • One of the greatest works of music by Mike Oldfield, along with the most monumental of mankind's achievements captured on film. This truely is a great short film. Thanks to youtube people all over the world can view things that were never available like this before.I am glad to have seen it.Oldfield's Music and Incantations are my personal Favorites !!! 5 stars !!!

  • Last Epic ? Hmmm, I see your point, but how about songs of distant earth ... surely another truly "start to finish" piece of music ?? Likewise, Islands Side one (Vinyl) is great, but S2 is messy.

  • Song Of Distant Earth is great. And what about Amarok???

  • Defenetely Incantations is the last epic work by Oldfield. We can save extract from the albums that come after incantations, but we cant save them completely. After incantations all is decadence.

  • Incantation - in my opinion the best album of Mike Oldfield. I also think the REAL Oldfield ended at this stage, after firs 4 albums

  • I have to respectivley disagree. He's come out with some Awesome music after Incantations. I saw him live at Horseguards. Best concert i've been to

  • I am inclined to agree, although it was the instrumental sides of "Crises" and "Five Miles Out" and most of "QE2" that first made me a fan. Certainly after "Incantations" his music changed radically, though Tubular Bells 2 was a brilliant reimagination of the original. A shame Viv Stanshall couldn't be around for the voiceover on TB2003, but Cleese is his natural successor.

  • Well, in my case it was actually 2nd part of TB which my much older cousin had tape-recorded from vinyl. It was back in 70ties - I was something like 10 at that time. I grew listening to all the Oldfield's "hits" of 80ties which for me were only easy-listening nice pop pieces, nothing more. In my opinion only first 4 Oldfield's albums are masterpieces as a whole - I've never got bored of listening to them. There are moments on other records I like but it will not change my general opinion.

  • I am with you on that one: once I listened to them, I had to conclude that the first four are the best. It was Moonlight Shadow that made me ask for "Crises" as a Christmas present, and that is how I discovered his instrumental work. You have to start somewhere.

  • Thank you very much for uploading this. I have been wanting to see it again for about 15 years. Youtube is absolutely awesome for finding gems like this

  • have you been in space yet
