the ball is going AWAY from the camera, therefore looking like it's going slower.

then when it comes TOWARDS the camera, it looks like it's going faster.

think about when you're driving, the cars in your lane don't look like they're moving much, yet the cars in the other lane are zooming in comparison.

this is actually incorrect. when you're in the car you are also traveling very fast. when you see a car going in the same direction at the same speed you attribute no speed to it, but when you see the car coming towards you, you not only recognize it's speed but you also add your own speed to it. the camera is stationary unlike you in the moving car. the ball moving further from the camera or closer to it has no difference when gauging speed.

okay a bad analogy, but the concept still applies.

imagine you are STANDING on a road. well the a car is getting closer to you it will look like its traveling faster than a car going away from you. this is a straight road of course.

a plane flying over your at 500 feet will look like it's going faster than one a 10,000 feet.
