  • I got a Ford dump truck like this....And to tell u the truth I never shifted like this...I always went through all 5 in low and then hit the switch..And really you could leave it in high and 1 still pulls fine??? But still from looking at the video I am confused when to hit the switch up and down, do u ever have to use the clutch when pulling up or pushing in the red button..

  • @tjsage79 Yeah split shifts are very useful in high gears with a heavy load on and they help you keep up the momentum to no end as they alter the final drive ratio on the move. The easiest way to operate this system is by pre-selecting the split change into high and then hitting the clutch pedal only half way to break engine torque for a smooth change, the same will apply when changing into low split but you need to match the engine revs as you shift like you do when shifting to a lower gear

  • The old rubber band on the splitter switch lol... I ran a corn binder with a 2 spd for a few years and that rattle sound will drive you nuts after a while, so I did the same trick lol

  • Our firetruck Chapmanville Tanker 10 an 89 GMC has that same tranny 366 gas engine

  • I was thinking of these things! A lot of buses used to have them too [Crowns, Internaitonals, and some others.]

  • It is still an art to get the monkey to run up the stick. if you don't get it right it grinds like no ones business.

  • On most 5 and 2's you dont split 4th. He went from 4th over to 5th over. You can do it the way he did, but you will start top gear at a lower rpm (200-300)

  • I used to upshift our international from 4th low to 5th low, and then from 5th low to 4th hi and then from 4th hi to 5th hi... I can't recall the transmission but it was an IH 1600 loadstar

  • I believe this is a spicer transmission you are talking about. We used to call these a short 4th tranny.

  • Roadway had some cabover fords w/that tranny set up.You could skip a gear(4thlo to hi to 5th hi)w/a lite load.or use every gear when loaded heavier.they were good city tractors but beat you to death...lol

  • do u have to put the clutch in the same amount when shifting low to high?

  • like splitting the gears?

  • yea, when u split does the clutch pedal have to go in the same amount?

  • from what i understand, yes...but i could be wrong

  • no u dont have 2

  • Nicky,

Whether to use the clutch on the lo-hi shift on the diff is entirely up to the individual driver - a rellie of mine had a Aussie ACCO with this drive layout..... Dad drove the truck and used the clutch on the lo-hi shift, but as I said, clutch is entirely up to the driver!

    Joe

  • sounds good, thanks man

  • @NickyTballer usually you dont have to push the clutch in that much to use the 2 speed rear. only enough to break torque

  • This system is a good add on to straight transmissions to get more ratios. But the best way is to learn to shift non syncros and get a 8LL,9,10,13,15 or 18spd either is better. The 2 spd axles are just toys for boys.

  • @pwarren1010 Excuse me! i run a 2 speed rear all the time. thats all our big trucks have. there great trannys!

  • when you go go from a low gear to a high gear do you push the clutch in or flutter the gas on an c60

  • Some the old ford cabovers w/detroit v8's in them had 5and 2's.except it went 4lo to 5 lo to 4th high and back to 5th.thats w/a load,w/o it you could skip that shift.

  • i am buying a chevy c65 5-2 speed and i want to know do you have to shft from 1 low to 1high to 2 low and so on without a load or can you just 1 2 3 4 5 ?

  • Either way works.

  • I just put mine in high and shift from 1st to 5th. Don't miss with the high low button.

  • if you have a heavy load you might want to split the gears

  • ive driven a 10 speed freightliner, and a 9 speed freightliner in the school. and a volvo super 10 and a mack 10 speed

  • I like the 5+2, the only problem is every truck ive driven with them has been beat to crap so they dont work well, always get hung up in neutral. We got a couple s1600 at work that have them but they are retired to yard duty now

  • @lobes107 Yeah we had an old ih loadstar that got hung up in neutral in the rear bad one time and it let my dad sit one time. The loadstar i got now the swithch is wore and so is the rear itself so its gotten stuck in neutral several times but not too serious tho. i love 2 speed rears and i learned on them but i hate that there sometimes tempermental. thats bout the only thing i hate bout them

  • Corn binder!

  • if you can use a 5 and 2 you can use anything

for a few years i drove GMC tractors 238 Detroit

    with 5 and 2 with a short 4th

    1st low, 1st high, 2nd low, 2nd high, 3rd low, 3rd high,

    4th low, 5th low, 4th high, 5 high

  • This is a lost art. I hadn't driven one in a long time. Married into a towing family with one. Not to mention an exhaust brake. Took a few but I remembered how to shift this set up again.

  • they are commonly known as "working 5 speeds". very common in chevy, gm, ford, dodge 2 ton trucks throughout 60's -90's.

  • Oh thats what they call it.I drove the ugly cabovers for roadway for 8 years b4 they got rid of them...lol and not a minute to soon..........

  • i love those transmissions...its almost like a super 10 but not exactly..

  • You could drive it like a 10 spd. if you had to. I had an old International farm hauler with a 3208 Cat, and a 5+2 set-up. With a load on you had almost no choice but to drive it that way.

  • its exactly a super 10 pretty much.

  • super 10. shift 1, then flip the switch to high, that was second. then out, then to 3rd. then switch up, that was fourth. i dont recall if you had to rev match every down sihft, or only half of them. i dont recall

  • iz it hard to drive i mean hard to shift

  • wow cool truck

    NEVER SELLIT!

  • man i learned how to shift the 5 2 and 4 2 when i was eleven i learned the 5 2 in an IH loadstar 1600. i dont do it often them horor stories of rippin' the drive line out among other things my cousin did it tore a hole in the grain box and needless to say it was a big bill

  • This video shows me exactly why we inented the 10 speed. I have many fond memories of crappy 5&2s freezing in low, or even worse neutral. Popping out of range, etc. They sure don't 'em like they used to- thank god.

  • you always gotta burp the throttle with a 5+2

  • You learn something everyday! I had no idea of the sequence of pulling the red button and THEN letting off the gas. Interesting stuff, thanks for posting.

  • i dont know wha 5 an 2 so its nice to see the video....fuk off

  • zaidtoronto,

5 and 2 simply means 5 speed transmission with a 2 speed differential!

    Joe

  • It looks like you shift that transmission the same way you shift the Eaton Fuller Super 10. But, idk, I was just saying.

  • man, how do you guys do that, shift a 5 and a 2?

  • 1988 S1700 DT466

  • He should know as he's the driver!

  • Technically, an S-1754. S for S line, 1700 = 1700 series, 5 = mid-range diesel and 4 = straight truck or Severe Service tractor.

  • What model is this IH mid-ranger? S-1854? S-1954?
