Compared to Ian Gillan there is no David Coverdale! I mean, live Gillan blows Coverdale off stage, and Gillan is a master in so many different styles of singing; Highway Star, Child In Time, Fools, Place In Line, Anyone's Daughter, No Laughing In Heaven, Black Sabbath (Live)... - My opinion!
@DeepPurpleOL Davids greatest live appearances are the best vocal live appearances of all time. no other voice can match his natural talent and thats my opinion ;)
Robert Plant did not leave Rock, he is Rock. Just because he's recording different genres right now, doesn't take away the fact that he is an amazing singer no matter what genre he delves into. I think Coverdale is a good singer, just not up there with Plant or Ian Gillian.
Notice how the Whitesnake songs were the studio versions, yet the Gillan Purple tunes were live versions. Probably because Coverdale can't hit the notes consistently.
@diegoleonization I don't know what planet you live on but Plant is still recording and touring. Coverdale is the one who is a thing of the past. Gillian's music is real, not just 80's hair band bs
@pragmaticalpaula123 maybe you leave in a different dimension but Whitesnake's Forevermore was nominated as rock album of the year 2011 and its in the top10 in every serious Rock Magazine! also in 2008 Good to Be Bad voted best rock album of the year and WS named best band of the year 2006 in Classic Rock. Plant records different type of music nowadays, singing with chicks and playing country music, while WS plays Hard Rock. David remained true and never quitted Rock music..
What a silly game to compare two of the best singers of rock music ? I like Coverdale better but that doesn't mean Gillan is not an equal good singer. And btw. your choice of songs who is singing what: I like the songs better you chose for Gillan but still I like Coverdale's timbre better. Comparing a fantastic Scotch to a unbelievable good Malt - Useless senseless :) Sorry...
I really like Dave's voice in 70's, he was great singer, but Gillan... folks, Gillan is a God, not a singer, it's a sin to compare him to other "ordinary" rock singers. There was just one person with equal voice quality like Ian. This person was Ronnie James DIO.
@loldacz I saw Purple in the mid 90s twice in Switzerland with Satriani on guitar & Gillan fuck up so bad my heart was aching. Two years ago I saw Whitesnake in Germany & David was fanfuckingtastic.... & same thing last year in GB.
@B3TerTer Funny you say that you hear Coverdale with Deep Purple singing Highway Star, and I think Glenn Hughes had to do all the High Notes because Coverdale could not handle them. lol, no way does Coverdale compare to Gillan. Why does anyone think that when with Deep Purple you never see a recording of Coverdale trying to sing Child In Time, because he can't!!!!!!
Child in Time: greatest song in rock history, performed in a way that noone can beat, Highway Star: is simply one of the greatest songs, I think Ian Gillan will make the best singer, (despite that Burn and Mistreated beats Highway Star)
When we can ask "who's better: Ian Gillan or David Coverdale?" it only shows those days are over and far behind us. Now we just can ask "who's worst?". Sad but true. These two? Both amazing, can't choose.
no need to choose for me guys..........DAVID COVERDALE WAS IS AND WILL BE THE VOICE......also Joe Lynn Turner is and was an amazing singer for Purple, and Slaves & Masters by his vocals I think is the best Purple's alboum ever....................................Gillan just shout's
in the 70's Ian Gillan was better, bout now Coverdale wins, because he took care about his voice and Ian lose his voice at the end of the 80's, after the Perfect strangers album. Both are and were amazing. Both are living legends
They are both great at what they do... 2 different styles: David on the soulful side and Ian the screamer -- love them both and both put their stamp on the Deep Purple table ---- now, it's just a matter of taste and opinion.
Are you joking? How can even think about comparing a warm blues and dynamic voice like Coverdale's with a plate and static voice like Gillan's? Ian Gillan had the only skill to be able to go very high, and sometimes he could even be a little more expressive that the usual; besides that, he had such anonymous timbre. When you think about Deep Purple, the last thing you think is amazing is Gillan's voice. In Perfect Strangers he had a more original timbre, but less hight.
@PietroRumenta What a load of old cobblers!! It was because of Gillans marvelous voice that Purple became as big as they did. If Gillan hadn't left the band DC could still be working in a clothes shop in Redcar!! Coverdale is a marvellous singer, but his timbre is very close to that of Paul Rodgers (no bad thing) but please dont put your amatuer remarks on here about possibly the greatest hard rock vocalists of all time. you just look like afool!!
When Coverdale sings the part of Christ in the Jesus Christ Superstar at all than we can talk comparison. Personal preferences aside, Gillan's voice has a measurably much wider range, his talent covers an array of many styles and singing manners, while the other one is a one trick pony. Gillan is an originator, the other one is an approximator. That is that and that is all.
Imagine if Coverdale did Highway Star...Do you think it would be memorable as Gillian's? Gillian made Machine Head a timeless classic and I personally was not impressed with DP after he left. Blackmore forever!!
Coverdale every time, Gillan sounds like a third rate cabaret singer, that awful vibrato. he can't sing scales he's not fluid he just goes heh-heh-heh.
I think that Ian Gillan is nothing without Deep Purple, An David Coverdale can do nice things by himself. No contest, David is much better, but i like Ian´s voice too.
gillan is a natural performer, coverdale is not. ian has a powerful voice, david too but the accent of ian gillan cannot be equalled. listen to david singing songs of ian. David's voice is wreck and sounds like an old man. Anyway, just my opinion. But during the 70's ian's voice was never equalled.
why is this comparing ian gillan with deep purple and coverdale with some cheesey trendy 80s songs.. that white snake one.. here i go again on my own. is decent but whys that being compared to DP? wheres the clip with coverdale singing burn.. ok this video sucks thumbs down
gillan was the best in deep purple in 70's era, but david coverdale from 1984-1993.... ohhh man, no coments, it's amazing voice, have much more power than gillan's voice can offer... but... my opinion
Глупый топик. Каждый хорош по своему. Каждый из них привнес неоценимый вклад. Без обоих было бы скучно. Led Zeppelin и Deep Purple не хуже и не лучше друг друга. Они принципиально разные, но идеологически схожие.
@uncoveror I agree. A more fair comparison would be..say, Mistreated with Child in Time and Burn with Smoke on the Water (etc) I can't help but feel that, although the better singer, Coverdale basically sounds like any other Hair band vocalist in this vid. Gillian has a subtle delivery that is often understated, compared to DC's stronger tone.
@uncoveror Because that would render Coverdale a suffering donkey that he was at that time. That is that and that is all.
dude, YOUNG Gillan with 70s songs... cant compare with 80s arrangements coverdale! honestly! Coverdales 70s stuff is much better, and Gillan sucked after Machine head
Gillian is more lyrical and technical capable and pioneered a new way of singing where as Coverdale is more soulful and blues; one cannot compare apples and oranges unless to say that they are both great fruits.
Like Gillan more than Coverdale. Do you remember Blackmore left Deep Purple after Coverdale joined. I still think that Coverdale need Glenn Hughes backup for singing. You can almost hear Coverdale always breathing in every song thru the mic. No breathing in the mic when you learn singing. Excuse my English.

Porra!!! mas nao tem nem comparação.. as vozes são muito diferentes, mas eu prefiro o David Coverdalle... disparado!! Tem mais potência vocal e atingi níveis mais baixos e mais altos com muito mais facilidade!!!
while i agree Ian had a great higher relm and good vibrato - Coverdale is much more than one dimensional - he can sing low and soulfull / hard an raspy and occasionally hit the high notes with conviction as well - Coverdale is the better voice IMHO - now Coverdale vrs. Hughes would be a different story
@Kirshach listening to 2011 whitesnake tour videos I can definitely say that Gillan is in better shape than Coverdale now...Gillan lost his high vocal notes in 2008, but he is stillgreat in low and middle range,,,
Coverdale was purples best singer by a long way

I like Gillan' voice, but Coverdale is just the VOICE to me.Still to this day his voice is absolutely awesome.

Notice the song choices Gillans are live Coverdales are studio versions.
I like both singers but if you listen to DP 2 and DP3 and 4 Live Gillan sings better.
I judge on live performances so you dont get many takes and overdubs to get it right.
Both great singers though.

while i agree Ian had a great higher relm and good vibrato - Coverdale is much more than one dimensional - he can sing low and soulfull / hard an raspy and occasionally hit the high notes with conviction as well - Coverdale is the better voice IMHO - now Coverdale vrs. Hughes would be a different story

@Kirshach listening to 2011 whitesnake tour videos I can definitely say that Gillan is in better shape than Coverdale now...Gillan lost his high vocal notes in 2008, but he is stillgreat in low and middle range,,,

@nazzare79 I've been to both Deep Purple and Whitesnake concerts this year, and I was faaaar more impressed with the latter.
