A deaf guy met Alyx before Gordon, was a story idea said by Gabe Newell in front of a real deaf focus group. However, the issue of that story idea in HL2 Episode Three, involves a concept, that the deaf guy is never seen, because he died before Gordon came into the HL2 picture, all together, or the combine got him, or something. The second concept, I don't think the deaf were fond of Valve using the concept of a deaf dying in the HL2 story line all together, which potentially means drama in HL2.
My thoughts are, this issue of the story, was the reason for this last episodic delay. That issue would need to be resolved. Another rumor is, their going straight to HL3, instead. A factor to consider for that is, their introducing new characters at the last minute. They also have to resolve the boss Advisor, and Gman's identity, there also is the Krakken base crew. Why, do I have the feeling, after all this wait, come the release, one of those is not resolved.

No, its actually three maps, the first one is another citadel in dm, the second one is EvoCity1v2 gm where their in a hotel room, none of the furnishings are there by default, the last one is the default gm map. I will experiment to see if making such a instance like this for gameplay is downloadable, but can't make any guarantees.
