  • the scene from a clockwork orange that uses this song is a better homage to the volkswagen golf gti :)

  • LOL Imagine Gene Kelly actually dancing like that☻

  • In Design, me and my Teacher were talking about all the old stuff (Gene, Morecambe and Wise, Tommy cooper, etc...) and hardly anyone knew who Gene Kelly was, so at the end of the lesson he forced everyone in the whole class to watch this :D

And THAT is why my Design teacher is amazing :D

  • Only just discovered the dancer for this advert is actually David "Elsewhere" from the 'robot dance' Kollaboration 2001 video! Amazing!

  • his face looks too fixed

  • Gene Kelly must be dancing for joy in heaven looking at this. Gene, you sir are a legend and will never be forgotten...

  • Gene Kelly must be smiling with joy right now!

  • Best advert ever? ... I think so.

  • One of my favourite adverts, along with the Heinaken dance one.

  • i absolutely love this advert! It is based on my favorite movie ,i love the remix and i wish i know who is the dancer cause he is extraordinary..:*

  • it was dave elsewhere with gene kellys face mapped onto his(digitally ofc)

  • i wish those stupid forced youtube ad things should be adverts like this then people wont complain lol

  • fantastic ad!

  • Amazing work! Love this. R.I.P Gene Kelly xx

  • best advert ever

  • Thanks for your comments,I designed and executed this advert with the help of many friends, did'nt realise it was more than the just the motorcar that inspired folks, thanks again,Ruben

  • Goosebumps!!

  • i get it now!

  • they used motion caption and imposed kelly's face on the dancer, i think it was the dude who did it was the same guy who did the youtube robot dance, but i could be mistaken.

  • @enjoyincubus77 Yeah it was the youtube robot dance guy. I'm pretty sure.

  • german cars are the best

  • Greatest ad ever?? maybe!

  • @TheKamist yeeeeeeees

  • greatest ad ever. nothing compares to this. period.

  • How'd they pull this off? Did they superimpose his face over another dancer?

  • It was pulled off with latex masks and CGI.

  • "The Original, Updated". Seriously, whoever came up with the idea for this ad deserves a medal. Gene Kelly would be proud.

By the way, when the dancer climbs up the pole and hangs upside down at 0:33, he has a nice arse!

  • How does his hat stay on :O

  • That is a leg of an add!!!

    Best 1 out there!!!

    VW RULZZZ

  • *whimper* This hurts my brain.

  • I wish they made this a full music video, it would have been sauce-ome....

  • This advert is brilliant. A great campaign all over.

  • Did you know that there are actually three men dancing here, all of them wearing Gene Kelly masks, although some of his features were superimposed onto the faces during close-up shots? Also, those cobblestones are actually made from rubber. I was really surpised when I learned that. By the way, does anyone know when this ad was first shown?

  • came out in 2007

  • @batterymage

Advert is late 2004 as the Golf reg is 54 -I doubt if they would show a three year old car in a 2007 advert!

  • now that i think bout it ur right!!

  • Yeah they put a lot of effort in to perfectly recreate the film set from the movie to make this ad to look as authentic as possible, which took a lot of effort =)

  • @jemmabond you so learned that off ad of the decade lol

  • You saw that show too, huh? :)

  • @jemmabond it was Jan 2005 according to documentary and an article i read.

  • love this! xxx

  • Song used:

Mint Royale - "Singin' In The Rain"

    You're welcome.

  • i think i can picture the actual Gene Kelly doing this. i bet it'll look awesome. we miss you, Gene Kelly!

  • Was that George Sampson kid on Britain's Got Talent before or after this?

  • after

  • he was n britains got talent years after this maybe 5 years.

  • the best commercial ever!

  • I agree. VW used to make the best commercials and this one is the pinacle. I miss my vw =(

  • I love this SO much. Can you possibly send it to me?

  • still best advert ever ever ever to date

  • Creepy as fuuuuck

  • Beautiful - brings tears to my eyes

  • Love the popping here by Dave Elsewhere. I wonder who did the flips and breakdancing?

  • Great ad

  • absolutely fucking genius always this is my favourite advert of all time!!!

  • i think that is in bad taste and a little disrespectful, to use his face and put it on some dude's body just for a car advert. sure, if it was just a remix someone made of the actual jene kelly, the video wouldn't be as bad, but it's like putting michael jackson's head on some dudes body to make a car ad. i think it's wrong :/

  • and I think you're an idiot.

  • and I think you're a douche. So I guess we're even? :)

  • Haha... That's just fine, we're even.

  • 'Gene' Kelly you tit.

  • 'Loser' look it up.

  • No its not.

This ad, apart from being a car ad is also an homage to the great actor, dancer, and musician that is Gene Kelly. In his time he was known for learning and mastering every type of dance style, he would even go out to observe kids (when he was in his old senior years) on the streets dancing.

He had a great passion for dancing and anything that evolved the art form of dance.

If he had been born a few generations later he would have probably studied and mastered these dance moves.

  • I read somewhere that he said Michael Jackson was the greatest dancer in the world. Not sure if he actually said it, but I can see where he's coming from.

  • @Inferfire well said

  • Beautiful

  • The original,updated .

    Volkswagon. Das Auto.

  • Great ad.

  • Still remember seeing this for the first time. Great surprise, great experience. Rare to see a commercial like this, simply genius.

  • all vw are

  • Easily one of the best adverts shown of Tv

  • i so need to ge tone of those

  • the best commercial ever seen on the face of the earh

  • i agree

  • who's the guy dancing?

  • Gene kelly is the superimposed face, and the guy dancing is David Elsewhere.

  • david elsewhere is one of the dancers.there were a few different people, but david was the main dancer.

  • my favorite commercial. thanx for this video

  • VW invented the GTi in 1976. Their Mark I and Mark II GTis were superb. Their Mark III and Mark IV versions were rubbish. The Mark V was a return to form. This ad reminds everyone that they were the original GTi; that it's as good as ever, only now more relevant to modern driving; and there's also that middle class thing for the Golf - knowing, classic allusions to another great entertainer. Says a lot without preaching. Also puts a clear style marker between this car and the hot hatch herd

  • well said

  • This is one of the coolest commercials I've ever seen.

  • creepy. like the evian roller babies advert. it just looks creepy and weird, imho.

  • what is the message in this ad?

  • o no its ok i figured it out now! :D

  • It's the old name, but 'improved' physically. I think not however :(

  • the original, just updated

  • Trivia: Pop moves done by David 'Elsewhere' Bernal. Google it. Bernal collaborating with Michael Jackson on his "This is It" tour.

  • This is the best advert ever made.

  • awesome popping and b-boying proppss

  • Why is this creepy yet amazing at the same time?? lol

What technology can do, I tell ya.

  • Yeah it is creepy, kinda reminds me of the scarecrow from oz.

  • yea his movements just seem really unnatural

  • horrifying. i dont know why, but it just freaks me right the hell out.

  • i know the song is called singing in the rain, but wht's the remix called

  • song is Mint Royale-Singing in the rain

  • song is Mint Royale-Singing in the rain

  • song is Mint Royale-Singing in the rain

  • 0:21 i find really creepy. it's an amazing man ressurected from the dead.

i'm only 11,so i didn't know about this film until today. obviously knew the song, didn't know one of the most famous films ever accompanied it. i doubt anyone in my school knows who gene kelly is. shame on them

  • lol, what do you mean "shame on them"? You just said yourself *you* didn't know who he was until then. A moment letter, it's "shame on" on other children your age who don't?

Ahhh, you've got to laugh ...

  • well, but i know who he is now... sorry lol

  • God I remember the first time I saw this in TV! I was sat there going :O for the whole thing!

  • Same! lol

  • Absolutely awesome commercial! Gene Kelly would have appreciated it had he been alive to see it. Hell, if he was born a few generations later, he probably would have been dancing like this. Outstanding.

  • i love this song and video!!

  • Gene Kelly = OG breakdancer!

  • nice dance at the beginning...before he gives the umbrella

  • it was dave elsewere who did the dancing, maybeliveyou is full off bull shit

  • ofcourse not... it is remix based on old clip. all that funky moves maded by computer.

but it looks and sounds just great and a bit original.

  • it's a real person dancing (i think there were 2-3 guys who did the commercial), they just used technology to keep gene's face over the dancers

  • Look up David Elsewhere - he's the guy doing the funky moves!

  • best advert ive seen

  • awesome! awesome! awesome! One of the all time great adverts. Great song, great remix - timeless!

  • I agree....

  • Is that guy really doing that? Nice advert!

  • I´m going to buy one! lol this advert is epic!

  • I am commenting on this.

  • BREAKDANCING ZOMBIE!!! Kills with FIRE!!!

  • I love this advert!

  • Bought a Golf V(Rabbit here) two years ago and love it to death. This, however, makes my skin crawl and never come back.

  • amazing in all words

  • I actually find this extremely creepy...D:

  • Dunno why but this song reminds me of my bday!

  • maziorex: Mint Royale - Singing in the rain.

  • what's the name of song?

  • what a funny video

  • absolute best advert ever!

  • finally, i've been able to place where i heard this song before george sampson!!!! thank you youtube!!

  • I KNEW it looked slightly off!

  • How the heck did they make him dance like that? O.o computer?

  • Same face different body, almost like the man ressurected.

  • shit, sorry dude, i clicked thumbs down by mistake.

they rebuilt the whole set, used three different break dancers and graphed gene kellys face over the top. the excellent pop locking stuff is by a guy called david elsewhere.

can someone please cancel out my negative feedback, it was undeserved.

  • haha its all good thnx for explaining what they did. ;D

  • Fine commercial. Some people talk about the integrity of the scene being compromised, but last time I checked, the original film was still around in all it's unedited glory.Besides, this ad gives exposure to an entertainer that no one short of one or two "film purist"would have known about much less shared with the younger generation.because of this ad maybe someone will rent or buy this guys movies.

  • love that remix

  • Fantastic ad!

  • Awesome, always get me going. Wow what a talent.

  • I remember people used to say this was fake- anybody who says this is a complete twat. All they've done is superempose Gene Kelly's face onto David Elsewhere and a couple of other breakdancers' bodies.

Awesome ad, I remember how much I loved it when it came out!

  • best ad ive ever seen

anyone know the name of that street?

    it feels so london-ish

  • this is class ffs, love it

  • You do realise, that gene kelly loved dance, and if this type of dance was around when he was, he would've learnt it and mastered it, he loved to watch people dancing in the street like this when he was older :P

  • Dancing is about expressing yourself. Don't give us this self righteous bullshit, you sound like a 70 year old that can't adjust to change

  • or you can just see it as a tribute to gene kellys outstanding perfomance, and as proof that he is still regarded as a master of a performer nowadays

  • Yup, you're right.

Just hate the selling part. It's like when they used old Fred Astaire footage to sell a Dirt Devil vaccum cleaner. His widow was given a lot of grief for selling the rights to his image, particularly from his children (most of them older than his wife).

  • love the breakdancing kelly

  • I love that advert, cool as fuck

  • HA!

  • David Elsewhere- what a legend

  • hi everyone i am currently doing a school project for a level media studies and was wondering whether you could help me !!!

if you could just answer this: ...

Did this advert make you think about the product on offer or did you completely discard the product and think about Gene Kelly dancing ?

do you think this advert is more memorable than other adverts such as vauxhall meriva and zafira adverts?

  • this advert made me think more about gene kelly thn the car.

  • made me think about the song and the technology used in the ad (i.e. his face "transplant") than the car tbh

  • I found this advert to be quite effective. After it caught my attention I immediately thought, "what is this advertising?"

Also presenting a great idea and excellent entertainment means I'll give support to Volkswagen.

And to answer your other question, yes I think it's much more memorable.

  • I agree. I find that Volkswagen tends to run advertisements that break free of the cliches that the other automobile manufacturers run. Very cool.

  • hi if ur still doing ur project then i makes me think about gene kelly because the car if only featured for a couple of seconds where he is in all of the advert

  • elswhere you so good but who's the bboy

  • I love this advert. I love it particularly because of the "shock, horror" responses it drew. Gene Kelly break dancing??? Well, he'd be rolling in his grave at this, right? I wonder how many realise that Gene in his prime could have done the entire sequence himself. (This one took three separate dancers, I understand.) Not knocking the talent on display here, but Gene was the man. A true athlete.

  • Marvellous !

What's the name of the music ?

I know it's probably the remix specially built for that advert but if someone has the name, I'm ready to get it !

  • Mint Royale - Singin' In The Rain. Check out the vid - great choreography.

  • swoon...Farfignoogen!!!

  • The guy in the advert dancing is called David and hes the one who does the Robot dance thats got millions of views, just type Robot dance in youtube or even google and it will come up, great dancer and hes done a lot of adverts pepsi and so on....

  • To give him his full name, its: "David 'Elsewhere' Bernal"

  • There are two other dancers used as well. Jay Walker and Bboy Crumbs. The last bit with the flip and 1990(one handed spin) is Bboy Crumbs.

  • i lovvee this song=]

  • This has got to be one of the coolest commercials ever. <3 I'll always love it.

  • This advert is atleast 3 years old isn't it? anyone know when it was made? The music appears to of only become popular 2007/2008

  • i think it was probably more like 5 or 6 years ago.

  • Advertising Wise: A Sure Sell

    Nostalgia Wise: Sacrilege

  • This advert is sooo good, I love it!

  • wow amazing concept for an ad, so bloody good

  • omg weneva i watch this i always think of george dancing

    omgomgomg

    i love that boy <3

  • How cool is this advert! Really well done! Love this version of the song.

  • one of the greatest cover/remix's ever on one of the greatest adverts ever

  • Love this advert :D

  • hey this is the proof!!!

this was george sampsons influence ( from britains got talent fame)

  • not influence it's a straight copy! without this he'd be nothing

  • I think gene kelly would be dancing in his grave right now! :)

  • I think this may be one of the greatest ads of all time! Even better than George Sampson's Singing in The Rain!!

  • this is really amazing. i wonder how much it cost to make this.

  • theres a smiiiiiile on my faace

  • yeahh the actual dancer is David Elsewhere. They then put Gene Kelly's face onto it.

really good ad, it made me stop and watch
