actually estonians fight in helmand region, with british troops. since this region is the most unstable, daily firefights are common. also in iraq, US used estonian motorized infantry as fast acting professional fireteams. considered as special forces by US officers in charge.

I don't know what you, Estonians, have forgotten in Afghanistan (though I can guess, as even underpants of your canon fodder are paid by USA), but "Russians" (i.e USSR incl. EstSSR) didn't want the Afghan territory for sure. They helped to the friendly local government.

Well i am sure that you don't know much about our history. During different historical events, estonians has been in critical limits serveral times (~ 100 000 people). So the fact that estonian culture and people are still existing is rather a miracle than historical inevitability or smth... It shows that we can be small in numbers but our national spirit is enormous.
Actually, Estonia is one of the smallest nationstates in world. I'd say, that we have been lucky enough to survive, but unlucky enough, to not have lots of free times.

The reason why estonians are fighting there is that we need security. Our neighbour from the east has shown itself as very unreliable one. So we have to do it. @PapaRDoc The reason Finland is not a member of NATO isn't because the Finnish military is strong enough to fight off a full scale Russian invasion on its own (it isn't!), but as a result of post-war "Paasikivi-Kekkonen Doctrine", cold war Soviet pressuring and finlandization.
The role of the Finnish military isn't to render an invasion impossible, but too costly to be carried out.

Having said that, the invasion would not be without casualties. Finland is no Georgia: the FDF are better trained and equipped and Finland has a modern and combat capable albeit small Air Force able to contest Russian air superiority. The FDF could deal a serious blow to the initial attack forces, but Russian armed forces have tremendous reserves and FDF cannot survive a war of attrition for long.
However, the game would not be over even when Russia manages to militarily occupy Finland. The occupying forces would be stuck in a guerrilla war. Every able-bodied male Finnish citizen has received basic military training and the military would have stashed enough assault rifles for everyone. It would be far worse than Iraq (in Iraq there are several rivaling factions whereas in Finland there is only one).
The point is that the costs of invading Finland would outweigh the gains. The international community Recognizes Finland's sovereignty and would definitely condemn the invasion, Russia's foreign trade would go down and negatively impact her economy which would affect the morale of the public which would already be down because of young Russian men returning home in boxes.

So the fact that estonian culture and people are still existing is rather a miracle than historical inevitability or smth... The reason why estonians are fighting there is that we need security. Our neighbour from the east has shown itself as very unreliable one. So we have to do it. We hope that when we act as a good ally, then its more likely that we have some protection. It's our only hope to survive when things get heavy with our big eastern neighbour. I'm not saying that the afghan conflict aint bullshit but its pretty much the only option. (sorry about my english)

@PapaRDoc The reason Finland is not a member of NATO isn't because the Finnish military is strong enough to fight off a full scale Russian invasion on its own (it isn't!), but as a result of post-war "Paasikivi-Kekkonen Doctrine", cold war Soviet pressuring and finlandization.
The role of the Finnish military isn't to render an invasion impossible, but too costly to be carried out.

There is third party in the game anyway, and it's called the European Union. The Treaty of Lisbon clearly states that EU countries must be prepared to defend another EU country if this gets attacked, and when vast majority of EU countries in in Nato, it would come along as well bringing USA with it.

Finland is no Georgia: the FDF are better trained and equipped and Finland has a modern and combat capable albeit small Air Force able to contest Russian air superiority. The FDF could deal a serious blow to the initial attack forces, but Russian armed forces have tremendous reserves and FDF cannot survive a war of attrition for long.

Every able-bodied male Finnish citizen has received basic military training and the military would have stashed enough assault rifles for everyone.
