The Los Angeles Times Newspaper delivery in Los Angeles is ridiculous. The carriers are lazy and usually miss a day or two. All customer service calls are routed to the Philippines. The company reported it would be better off training and hiring in the Phillipines than its own city that it serves. I cancelled my subscription. Instead use various internet sites for news it's, faster, more accurate, and you save lots of trees. GO GREEN.
Nice to see that kind of old machine's still rolling, our 52 doubledeck unit Goss went to srapmetall few years ago and new bigger printmachine was set up. Still missing that old slow simple Metroliner witch was easy to repair and sounded like a "real" print.
Usually a product is printed in double delivery if there are too many colors in the newspaperor in the sections being produced. This edition is only the classified section for the Friday morning paper, with many full color paid pages.
Ok I see. We don't have such a large paper. Our page counts are normally only 54 page. Sometimes 62- 66 pages for the Sunday paper or in the fall around Thanksgiving. And then we only switch to collect instead of a straight run. Thanks for the reply!
They use computers now. I took a tour of the Los Angeles Times back in the 60's and it was the Royal typewriters all clattering that were making the noise. The presses were a lot noiser than they are now. Back then they used heavy metal plates with metal types that were mounted on heavy press rollers and spun at a high rate of speed. The opening scenes from the Front Page (1975) with Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon shows the old presses of the Los Angeles Times in action.
The quietroom is very large, but step through the thick doors and the decibels increase to deafening levels. I have many photographs of the pressroom on Flickr, search for edpadgett on Flickr.
NEWSPAPER GIANTS
Those newspaper giants standing tall with their backs against the wall,
chase the truth, then tell it proud to help their nation live out loud.
The news they share in black and white brings the world into our sight.
The facts of life on Earth they bring so they can help our freedom ring.
A nation silent cannot stand for freedom in this wild land.
Those giants shout from mountainous towers, the news from dawn to evening hours.

"Come one and all," their papers say. "Let truth and freedom guide our way.
We have a team so tough and strong that truth can't hide from them for long."
A journalist knows that you must find the facts as rumours make as blind.
Like wise detectives they discover truth that's hiding under cover.
City giants, keep our nation flying in freedom, truth's sensation.
Keep us wise, and keep us strong, in a nation singing freedom's song.

Why in double delivery? The numbers you have to produce over night or what?

The New York Times is the world's greatest newspaper. The Chicago-Sun Times, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times are somewhere after.
