  • at 1:59, does she say "chasing their hoots with a knife", referring to hotknifing?

  • A greasy heart but did she have some lungs or what?

  • Oh man I loved the Gilrl Scout uniform!!

  • @necr086 What are you talking about, man? 45, 723 people haven't forgotten this kind of music, 186 just love this kind of music and I'm sure there are more people in the world that would dig this music, too.

  • the first time i did acid I insisted on hearing this song. It played strange little head tricks on me and i was in psychedelic heaven. Trip on Grace.

  • Thumbs up for being in love (and wanting to fuck) Grace Slick in her 20s.

  • I forgot all about this song 'til I heard it on late-night public radio this week. What a singer. I always wanted to have Grace's voice. Great song and band..

  • I truly believe that Grace Slick is the greatest Female Psychedelic Rock Vocalist ever to have lived !

Can anyone think of any one to better her ?

  • @angeliqueve I, for one, am stymied by the possibility that such a person can exist! This woman's vocals are unparalleled as far as I know.

  • @angeliqueve She's probably the greatest female rock vocalist ever, period.

  • @angeliqueve I love Janis Joplin, they dont really have comparable voices. But I love them both!

  • @angeliqueve

    Not joplin

  • @TumbrelJockey LOL! That's a perfect description.

  • @TumbrelJockey oh, the top rated comment was something else when I posted that. xD

  • @1bichon1 Grace sang strong and in a "no bullshit" way.

She has heart and courage; I admire courage

There never will be another like her!

  • My favorite airplane album. very underrated

  • Wow, the top rated comment is completely misguided misogynist privileged bullshit. awesome.

  • 2 heads are filled with sand.

  • In the Sixties, they were considered one of the world's greatest Rock 'n Roll bands, much more famous than the Grateful Dead. But they disappeared rather suddenly. Their legacy should be as famous as the Who's, if there was justice in the world.

  • @54markl They pretty much "tripped' away from the fray. Marty Balin just rather survived this drama.

  • @pbrucpaul When their arms got incredibly fat, they lumbered back together and made the clunky "We Built This City," which ironically was their biggest smash hit! Fat Elvis Time.

  • Off with 2 people's heads!!!

  • Upon a renewed perusal of these rather odd lyrics, which I have known since I was a child in the Sixties, I have come to the belated conclusion that this song is a rant against Grace's dad. "Put a lock on her bed at night, Sweet life, but no child of mine." Maybe her dad was a cold man with incredibly fat arms. This is still one of the best songs ever written. This site cuts off the echoing, receding cymbal crash at the end. I have the 45.

  • I love Grace's nonsense songs!

  • Grace is part Norwegian, part Mayflower. Jorma is second-generation Finnish-American. Marty is American Jewish, German or Polish roots, I think. Paul Kantner is a Kraut, obviously. ;-) Jack is an Irish-American, Spencer was -- I'm not sure what, but he was a great-nephew of Charlie Chaplin. And Jefferson Airplane were and ARE the greatest rock and roll band EVER !!!

  • This is Jim Swaggart. Yes, it's true, I went on a very chaste date with Grace once. we had egg salad sandwiches and root beers. She pecked my cheek at the door, that's the last I saw of her. While we were eating at the diner, children were sucking on stones and lead at the next table. One of them chased a hoop with a knife. I think that's what she's talking about here. She had just broken up with spencer, she got back together with him the next day. Ah, bittersweet Finnish memories!

  • @54markl During our dinner, my cousin Jerry Lee lewis came over and chatted with us. Poor man, he was all ready bloated from too many Schlitzes. After he left, Grace said "His arms are incredibly fat." " He hangs out with Don Kirschner," I explained. "That hedonist!" Grace was startled "Don Kirschner?" she exclaimed. "I thought that was Ed Sullivan!" Then the Smothers Brothers came over and cast a pall over our whole dinner. It made me want to sin, but I resisted Temptation. Praise Jeebus!

  • You're all confused about this song. Grace is just recalling her date with Jimmy Swaggart..... :)

  • Maybe Marty just bogarted her joint, it was all so innocent in those days.

  • Don't think she's mad in this son -- or that she was involved with Marty, ever.

Grace was in a relationship with Spencer Dryden both before and after this song.

It has been said, jokingly, that Marty was the only straight guy in SF who didn't sleep with Grace. He refused.

This is just another about being in an altered state. Who knows what she meant to say? Grace hasn't given out many clues about any of her lyrics, and it's been a long time.

God bless you, Grace. No one compares.

  • this is such a great song when on mind expending substances

  • She is mad! She caught Marty cheating on her! Hey, where's that old geezer who tried to pull rank on me? I'm just a couple of years younger than him. Oh, well do I remember your kind when I was growing up in the Sixties! Geezer, we really looked up to you. BECAUSE YOU GUYS WERE HIGH AS KITES MOST OF THE TIME! Bwahahahaha! Aah, you're probably still trying to find out how banana peels work! Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

  • @54markl interesting, because SHE,AND MARTY WERE THE ONLY TWO IN THE BAND THAT DIDN'T FUCK,BUT OF COURSE YOU KNOW THESE THINGS,RIGHT,IDIOT SILLY ONE,no one smoked banana peels dodo dickhead douche,so GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT MR.WHAT,25YR OLD,she's not MAD,SHE'S NORDIC,THE WHOLE BAND IS BASIC NORWEGIAN,and germanic types who SING GREAT,LIKE WAGNER OPERA,HURL OUT THUNDER AND LIGHTNING,NOW GO SLIP ON A BANANA PEEL DOCTOR DOUCHE

  • @alezander666 I see. They're Norwegians, so they couldn't possibly have affairs. And here I was thinking Jorma was Finnish (they don't like Norwegians). You on the other hand are obviously from TURKEY, turkey. And you mistook that Magic Mushroom for a banana peel, you're trippin.

  • @54markl they are not norwegians. they were based out of San Fransisco, CA, USA. Jorma was, indeed, Finnish. he was born in Finland, his family moved here when he was just a boy.

  • @shymama8 Thank you. My bad, for stirring flighty people up over nothing. It's a wonderful song, that's all that matters. Ms. Slick's life is pristine compared to most others.

  • @54markl naw, its all good, and you're right, great song :)

  • @shymama8 Thank you.

  • @54markl We finns don´t have anything against the people of Norway... Atleast I don´t :P

  • @Lolledape True, these days they are friends. But all of Scandinavia used to belong to the Finns in ancient days. The Norwegians and Swedes stole a big part of it from them.

  • @alezander666 they are not norwegians. they were based out of San Fransisco, CA, USA. Jorma was, indeed, Finnish. he was born in Finland, his family moved here when he was just a boy.

as for the rest of the band, they are all american, with varying nationalities. .

  • love two heads reminds me of days at the fillmore what a haze peace

  • It seems Grace was interested in politics.

  • love bathing at baxters

  • @1bichon1 - visual: "Cat hissing"

  • Amazing tune

  • i like this band but i despise the notoin ofv the band being an aeroplane.

  • this band was so awesome.

  • My aunt got this record by mistake in a record club and thought to give it to me. I was 12 years old at the time. It still is one of my favorite records. I had a crush on Grace way back when she was a hottie.

  • Nothing really sounds like this today; and when am I gonna hear this cut on a "Classic Rock" station? I can still remember hearing Ravi Shankar, Johnny Cash, and the Byrds on the same rock station in the 60's! Boy, has radio gone downhill! I hate "niche," marketing approved, sponsor-friendly playlists!

  • @alderems You ain't kidding, citizen.

  • @alderems I f you dose the d.j....you just might hear this tune

  • @alderems Yeah, all they play is the same overplayed crap over and over, while a lot of underrated songs don't get any play at all.

Jefferson Airplane only gets "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit", the Grateful Dead don't even get any of their 60's stuff played (even though they have a reputation as a 60's psychedelic band), and Pink Floyd always gets Dark Side of the Moon and everything after that. And some bands never get any play at all, and just fade into obscurity. :(

  • @alderems this on a Corporatist "classic rock" station? LMAO!..a snowball's chance in hell....

  • Reflections in the door of a green Volkswagon...lol...

  • Trippy...

  • a coded message for Nancy Pelosi.

  • Listening to this and Watch Her Ride back is absolutely wonderful.

  • @yieldyieldyield Yipes! Was David Crosby after Grace? I know he was after Joannie Mitchell.

  • Yipes! Was David Crosby after Grace? I know he was after Joannie Mitchell.

  • Spencer!? Didn't know, Jeezus. Then what was "Why Can't We Be Three" about, I know it was about Marty. Grace is such a brilliant songwriter, she more than held her own in the male-dominated rock hierarchy. She wrote about as well as John Lennon, who she reminded me of, in an odd way. This beautiful song has such fine lyrics, she should have won an award for them.

  • Anyone else notice the LSD wrting at the top of the album?

  • @irishelk1 Nice....I just did...is that lsd 1511.?....must be some serious shit, man!

  • Cildren are sucking on stones and bread , and chasing their hoops with a knife. She got revenge on Marty by dumping him for Paul, which basically destroyed the group.

  • when i first heard this song as a kid, i was in awe because it was scary and mean. i totally got the feel of the song, but the content was mysterious and ominous. i later found out this song is about grace being mad at marty for cheating on her with a groupie. not as profound as i thought, but istill love this song. it's all about growing up in the sixties.

  • @54markl It was Spencer. She never slept with or dated Marty. She didn't hook-up with Paul for another couple of years. I don't think the song is so literal either. It's about vanity and ego turning monstrous. Spencer was probably just the jumping-off point. Great song though. It's one that will always poke you with a stick and send you hurtling back to the truth.

  • @rustribbonwizz Relic!? Excuse me? This is not a fossil, this is not a dinosaur bone.

  • Comment removed

  • @rustribbonwizz Fair enough. I am in my fifties. Yeah, you older teenagers were always sarcastic.

  • @54markl I'm in the "digital" world. I have no problems with the "1's"-- it's the "0's" that are a problem!

  • @rustribbonwizz We younger kids looked up to you mean older teenagers. Because you were high on banana peels, oh yes, we had to crane our necks!

  • Does anybody out there know what this song is about? I been puzzled about this ever since it came out, that's over 40 years ago. WHAT IS GRACE TALKING ABOUT IN THIS SONG????????

  • @knownonsense99 She's pissed because she caught Marty cheating on her with a groupie! She wanted to kill him, but instead she took up with Paul Kantner. Marty left the group in a rage. It's about her wanting to chop Marty up into pieces because he cheated on her.

  • This isn't anger. It's awareness. This woman is potent.

  • I wish we could put "two heads" together and do something about the economy! I've heard Grace talk about world affairs and she is extremely intelligent. and honest. She speaks her mind. Maybe she should run for something? Problem is shes' "honest" I don't think we can ever have that in politics.

  • So thats what the airplane of jefferson looks like.

  • I love Jefferson Airplane, but this song is terrible after 3:13

  • oh yeah for sure one of my favorite songs by Jefferson Airplane! Grace has an orgasmic strong voice!

  • Inside your room, your jail....

  • WOW!! 2:29-2"58 gave me chills!!lol amazing song by an amzing band!!

  • @1bichon1 This woman was born in 1939: great original artist that she is, she

no longer does the talk show circuit. She's about 70 years old today: she has

been painting for about 15 years now, and would rather talk about that.

  • @bookkeeper57 - i'm an enormous grace slick fan but was surprised that someone with a voice that triggered so much visionary experience is a painter of such banality. Somehow i thought her paintings would be like her voice....something like Alec Grey or Ernst Fuchs or Matti Klarwein. But they aren't...

  • @1bichon1 Commercial radio sucks--they'll only play what everyone's heard a million times...esp classic rock stations who don't need to follow a "hits" regimen yet only play three or four songs from every artists. If you listen to classic rock programming on satellite radio it's anything goes---it's soooooooo wunderbar.

  • I Had a good conversation about Jefferson Airplane with a guy from San Fransisco, after a Paul McCartney gig in Dublin two months ago, like me,he was also a big fan :)

  • I like marty in the background doing that weird counterpoint

  • Cista psihodelija! Originalna stvar, nema sta...

  • Amazing lyrics, great album (What will you do with your bloody hands, America?)

  • great stuff, i listened to all this when i was 10 years old

  • ...prolly a "chastity belt"- i.e., an attempt to control female fertility, (or a response to internal fertilization, depending on how you look at it)....

  • punk rock.

  • @noodlam Word. Up against the wall motherfucker!

  • This is my favorite Jefferson Airplane song of all time!

  • same as me

  • love when she curses...

  • Acid Rock

  • Fricken AWsome song man.

    Gotta love the classics

  • I used to think she said "Children are sucking on stones in red and chasing their hooves with a knife". I don't really know why I decided to tell you that but still...

GREAT SONG! I love everything about it.

  • I think she does say that at some place in the song...doesnt she? at 1:53 but I think its "an'bread" and not "in red".

  • Very difficult to make out but most online sources have it as "children are sucking on stone...AND LEAD/and chasing their hoops with a knife." Chasing hoops (with a stick) was a common game in the early 20th C. and probably before.

  • Yes, I am an native English speaker (American) and it's quite hard to figure out the lyrics

  • te amo te amo y te amo grace eh nacido tarde soy argentino tengo 22 años, soy fanatico de jefferson airplane .saludos claudio rodriguez. me tomo las pastillas de mi amor grace slickk

  • I enjoy this song too much !

  • Grace Slick was angry about something: you can hear it in nearly every song she ever wrote.

  • I don't think Grace Slick was angry, just very passionate.

  • Well, nothing wrong with a little anger. Esp. when it produces great, surreal songs like this.

  • xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

    WONDEFUL

peace and love to gracexxxxxxxxxxxxxxand the bandxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • This is my favorite Jefferson Airplane song.

  • my favorite album ever. I can't thank you enough!

  • I was wrong. It's actually "Shizo", so there's no comedy. Schizophrenic - Two Heads...get it? anyways, ignore my other comment.

  • Love the humour. "Schizo"forest, "Two Heads"...get it>?

  • Explain it to me, please lol

  • Nice quality

  • great Grace
