  • This is amazing.

  • I wish the quality was better!! I'd totally put this on my Ipod.

  • Singing a Beowulf excerpt accompanied by a hurdy-gurdy? Doesn't get much better than that! The theremin is cool, too.

  • sounds just like the Greek Lyra

  • @greekgirlx not really

  • I was mesmerized when I first viewed this video. Magnificent! When I thought it couldn't get any better, I realized that you were using the Theremin as the Demon-Mother's voice. Pure genius! Thank you.

  • I cannot communicate how great this is. You should try to do more of Beowulf. The more bare bones and authentic sounding, the better!

  • Just listening to this is so haunting. Sitting around an open camp fire with a spit-roast boar, sharpening your axe and enjoying a pint of mead.

  • Great stuff. Love to hear more.

  • What translation of Beowulf is this? I would really like to read it.

  • I saw this instrment in music class... i'm curoius on how they play it so i looked it up.. THIS IS PERFECTLY GOOD!!!

  • This is perfect.

  • Man, this is seriously awesome! Both musicians are awesome! I am very impressed.

  • This dude is THE most kick ass Hurdy Gurdy player I have ever seen. Breathtaking stuff. What a voice too...

  • I love this and defo have to find out moe about this Moog Ethervox theremin instrument. Never heard of it in my life till now. Its gorgeous though.

  • Oh my God how kick ass is the Hurdy Gurdy man...

  • 01:33 whats that dark pad that hits in there?

  • @Uvisir I think that's an effect he's utilizing on a floor pedal he has that we can't see. Whatever the case may be, I agree with you friend, the effect it creates adds just that much more to the awesome sound he has!

  • Love this to. What a voice!

  • Love this!

  • @connorav Try Falkenbach... Tiurida is the only cd of them I've listen and I'm totally in love with their music

  • Excellent voice for such a thing. I LOVE the sound of the hurdy gurdy!

  • waaaw, i'm in trance...

  • Why haven't I heard of these fuckers before!?

  • So wonderful, not listed specifically on Primble's site. ~How can I buy, or barter for this complete tale?

  • EXCELLENT BLEND

  • Really nice video! Great music, and you have a great voice to accompany this instrument. Very good job :)

  • Thank you for posting this video. It's a wonderful performance.

  • This music has the same use of scales as norwegian folkmusic.

    Hypnotic..

  • Great song ! Lisää tällaista. Vevlira som bäst, och sångare utöver det vanliga.

  • Wow....all I have to say is wow!

  • Great song, I love that instrument. But that isn't how Beowulf killed Grendel! This makes it sound like he cut his head off when he actually ripped his arm off.

  • Good sad story, those wicked kinsmen

  • Best theremin playing I've ever heard. Extremely good song as well, the hurdy gurdy has an excellent sound.

  • i am obsessed with this instrument now.

  • @baccdaggthrMUSIC me too. I want a hurdy gurdy and a theramin now. XD

  • @meetdiamond listen to the music inis mona then you will like it even more

  • Anyone else felt a cold chill streaming over his back to his arms?

    I did, this is beaytiful.

  • every since I stumbled upon this video, I have to watch it at least once a week. love it!

  • It is a time like this when I wish I had some predisposition to poetry; it is so frustrating to have no way to describe just how beautiful this is!

  • hauntingly beautiful

  • This is beautiful.. Can you make an extended version?

  • oh it's beautiful music, and i have a friend i love very much on here who is called Beowulf ! =))

  • very beautiful!!!! Such a beautiful blend of Hurdy Gurdy music and that voice...really really nice!

  • This is amazing!

  • This is really fantastic. I would buy a full length recording of this in a heartbeat.

  • A modern day bard! Fantastic!

  • This is just wonderful. I want a hurdy-gurdy to tell Epic stories and "cantigas" to my close ones. I would save a lot of money on movies and drama plays.

  • Now do the rest of it... please.

  • Just incredible! You're a wizard! Anyway, it sounds magic even in modern English. Thank you!

  • Braaavo !!!!

  • Obrigatório para alunos de Linguagem Sonora e Musical... Abre a mente dos emo's da vida!

  • Interressant..

  • It's GREAT! Hurdy Gurdy with Theremin!

  • CAN"T WAIT TO BUY ONEEEEEE

  • Wow, i love it. Think the vocals need a little reverb to sound stunning!!

Would love to hear this under a music video = To have a music video made from the audio of this video! 2 thumbs up!!!

  • Wow, fantastic. Very haunting!

  • Would've been fun if he sang it in old English, ah well, this is good as well.

  • A bizarre combination.... but I would have preferred the original Old English beowulf text to this modern translation.

  • page sixteen of "to whom it may concern..."

BEO REO YU YU WE CLARA

  • Dear Peter, it is Reid again, for you, PC,

    "to whom it may concern..."

    love.r

  • Oh my God, I want one

  • Nooooo. He's activated the Hurdy Gurdy!!! We're all dooooooooooomed.

  • OH MY GOD!

WE ARE ALL DOOMED! THE HURDY GURDY IS ACTIVATED!!!!!

    AHHHH

  • thread title,

    " Gabrielle giffords "

    Reid Welch

  • i love your work very much :) this song reminds me very much of the crusaders music, but with that mystical touch only an epic like beowulf could convey

    best regards from germany

  • it truly is a shame this form of song is no longer popular...in my opinion it is far more beautiful than todays form of music.

  • @SpiritSinger True, good music is hard to find these days (hard as in not shoved in our faces by MTV and the like), but there's still plenty of amazing stuff being written these days, just takes a bit of effort to find. Also, given this track was played (beautifully) on a electro-acoustic Hurdy-gurdy through a digital reverb unit, accompanied by a theremin, digitized and then presented on a global computer network for all to see pretty much classes it as 'todays form of music' in my opinion.

  • @matt9741399 i wasn't exactly referring to the instruments...i did say "form" i guess you would call them ballads or folk songs. the kind the minstrels or bards of old would sing. or storytellers.

  • that was beautiful. it sent shivers through my body

  • woaaa. soooo f**king cool. really has medieval feeling.

  • this is soooo cool. my hairs stand up on the back of my neck. i can really feel the medieval soul this song has

  • Any of you people got any info on Jiri Weble? The hypnotic Hurdy Gurdy Bard from Prague?

  • HOLY SHIT THIS IS AWESOME!

  • Encore. Got to get more of this guy's work.

  • Just...hypnotic...amazing

  • Enchanting.

  • flat out amazing! I'm blown away.

  • Is there perhaps a higher quality version of this video and/or song?

  • an electric hurdy-gurdy well played. love it. Was that electric by design or you converted it, also did you use a mic in the sound chamber or pickups on the top end?

Well played, a very enjoyable rendition of part of teh saga, thank you.

  • PERFECT

  • Beowulf was a geat. Still a good song.

  • WOW!!!!!!!

  • didnt knew richard gere plays so good

  • genius!!!!!!

  • hauntingly beautiful, really good work

  • And Beowulf came into the place

Where giant Grendel stood, of twisted face.

And strewn upon a beach as black as coal

The whitened bones of warriors of old.

  • Many had come, and many here had died,

Still, “I am Beowulf of the Goths!” he cried.

But poisoned silence filled the air with dread

Where shadow-walkers feasted on the dead.

  • And Beowulf slew the fiend with mighty hand

And cast its severed head upon the sand.

A mournful cry came up from caverns deep,

The demon’s mother wakened from her sleep.

  • The Queen of Darkness, mistress of the night,

Beguiler of men and enemy of light,

She sang a song of sorrow in her den

And swore revenge on all the sons of men.

  • You're freakin' awesome!

  • Absolutely stunningly beautiful, magical. Thank you so much for posting this, it's like music meeting art. Wonderful..

  • When my kids ask for a bedtime story, this is what I will do for them.

  • beyond

  • What I would give to hear the entire poem recited in this way. this clip is a tease, but a great one at that. this is probably the best recitation of Beowulf i have ever heard.

  • That's epic. I'm gonna go look for the full version... What instruments could this be done with besides the hurdy-gurdy?

    I'm thinking a bayan (accordion)

  • @zeiris49

you can do this with a piano if you like, but it will not sound as mystic as this :P

  • Tonight we're going to party like its 1299.

  • I demand an AUTOTUNE

  • Beautiful!

  • what a chicken. I wanted to give this video a thumbs up and a comment.

  • beautiful

    thank you

  • Very nice and interesting!

  • YES! STUFF WHITE PEOPLE LIKE!!

  • @bedofrazorsqwerty Some of us Black people like this stuff too.

  • @msm2you Word

  • @msm2you awesome

  • this is true talent at its finest

  • How far we have fallen as a species; what heights we have lost...

  • @smithsonik93

don't be to down about this time mate, it's fine as well. in the 8th century the whole of europe was longing for the days of old roman prosperity, and cursed their present. don't do that, in 800 years this time will be remembered as a time of supreme culture and life, so don't worry and try to recognize the good things in our time :) (which is not hard i think)

  • really interesting!! My compliments for this musica-cultural research

  • this is absolutely hilarious. wow.

  • @codymcdonnell Why hilarious?

  • This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen and heard! Put up more videos like this!!! You're an epic bard!

  • Please .... PLEASE build a METALBAND !!!!!

  • angle, jute, frisian, saxon, goth, lombard, balkan, bohemian, batavian, bavarian, frank, norse, .......

  • I would replace every single musical thing on TV for this...to show how corrupted America is, and to show the beautiful majesty in this incredible music

  • This is quite likely very close to the way in which Beowulf and other such Old English tales were told and maybe close to a typical sound for such a telling. While maybe sung to the lyre rather than a hurdy gurdy or theremin, the sound is fitting. If it were only sung in Old English,,, though a translation would be needed!

  • excellent

    thank you

  • Don't hate on bagpipes, imagined if we played them together.....yyeeaaahhh

  • Take that bagpipes.

  • This is so cool. I love the sound of the instrument, your singing, and the theremin.

  • @Ghostshepard thanks man! i still have to ask her, so i have to wait for her to come back to America :p

  • Awesome work dude!

  • Beautiful. Omg, Anna from Eluveitie plays one in Omnos and it mixes PERFECTLY with the metal in the song, yeah, amazingly!

  • @Ghostshepard yes, and she plays so well. i will marry her one day.

  • @longtan Really? I so want to come to your wedding. It's true that Anna is sooo pretty! She's really nice too, unlike a lot fo celebrities. Good luck with engagement! :P

  • My favourite medieval instrument. Sounds great! And nice singing, too!

  • now thats haunting stuff

  • by now, we can only be examples like this guy. choose to work, research, and exhibit. like this guy. now get ff the computer, you hippies!!

  • Haunting, captivating and as another said.. pitch perfect. You are a talented guy.

  • Awesome!

  • If only we could still sail longboats and wield massive broadswords and slay demons and devils.... the world would be such a better place.

  • I agree. why give up a culture like this for television, rap, fast food...

  • I love the Hurdy Gurdy it sounds so awesome

  • Beautiful.

  • I will figuratively pay you one million dollars if you do all of beowulf.

  • Thats one of the most haunting things I've ever heard. Magnificent.

  • Holy fucking awesome batman!

  • I know that he's using an archaic instrument, and singing a translation from an archaic text, but holy shit if this is not metal as fuck.

  • @H4ppyKitty Check out the Swedish metal band Eluveitie they play amazing hurdy gurdy.

  • @bunnyclubfoot Eluveitie is Swiss not Swedish. Jesus, is it so fucking difficult to see the difference between these two countries ?

  • @dehostile They start with an S, close enough for most :-(

  • @Luudite - it was a mistake not a racist slur.

  • @dehostile no it's not fucking difficult, I only recently came across the band, and I happened to REMEMBER it as Swedish............ffs get a life. It isn't a big deal, I'm not going to google every post I make to check I've remembered things correctly.....you effing loser.

  • oh my god, this is beautiful!!!

  • very cool.....

  • This amazes me how close in sound the hurdy-gurdy comes to my bagpipes. More so the ancient music that you produce as i play the coel beck or (piobaireachd). what i find even more facination is that while i cannot express myself through word while playing pipes, only though my notes and crys of the chanter.. you can.. beautiful and thank you.

  • @ruyguy8888

    northumbrian pipes :)

  • Ein Traum...

  • The sound of hurdy-gurdy's great, echoing like in a cathedral or a great hall - I feel like I was in a viking's meadhall, listening to a bard. Due to men like these, the Medieval Era lives on! Eargasmic music.

  • THIS IS SO AMAZINGLY AWESOME.

  • This is very, very good. I've never heard a hurdgy-gurdy played with such feeling, and your vocals are outstanding. Pitch perfect.

  • Awesome! Ok, the hurdy-gurdy may be a slight anacronism in comparison to the poem, but recitation really sits well with a drone instrument.
