Wow!! I remember those routines! Lol!! The floor music was the newer version that they changed over to, and I remember that you had to change the bar settings all the time cause you had undershoot and land on the low bar to sole circle off! Wow, those were the days! Thanks for posting! Brings back so many memories! BTW, its funny that you picked your wedgie right after your saluted :-D
The routines are so different from now!!! the skills are different to! The bars especially i thought were very different and really amazing! The judging seems to have gotten easier because my routines on bars and beam arnt as clean as yours but i have gotten a 9.7 and 9.9's!
@mek11222 Maybe you compete in AAU or another division besides USAG. I think the scoring is still fairly the same, but if you compete in AAU, they tend to take the minimum deductions allowed, which could elevate the scores. USAG is not so forgiving! :-)
Ahhh! My old routines!!! I miss those days. :) You were very good. So that's what my beam routine was SUPPOSED to look like. hahaha. :) Thanks for posting!
@shedoom2000 This WAS level 5 bars, in 1995. The video says "1995 Level 5 State Meet." It is NOT level 5 anymore, and I didn't claim that it was the current level 5 routines.
@gymnascandytgirl This was 13 years ago, so I'm not going gymnastics anymore! lol I coach now though, and yep, my vaults were piked. Now that I coach, I would be such a better gymnast if I could go back knowing what I know now.
@sophia98ful You're right... I started gym when I was 11 years old, but I went right onto team and spent one year in each level. It was hard work, but mostly, love for the sport! That's why I still coach now.
oh my i was looking at old routines and i quit when i was 13 at level 5 these are the same routines i had in level 5.. the new routines are so different it seems like we did more stuff maybe i just wasn't looking at usgf
umm well VAgymnast5 im on dynamites and my highest scores are ( as a level four i have a meet on the 20 this month but only been to one meet so fare this season) Vault- 9.35
wow your routines are so much harder ours are easier! im a level five now and i notice the difference some parts are the same or at least a like but good job! lol
I remember these routines from when I did them. They are still ingrained in my head and I can still remember the silly sayings my coach taught me to remember the floor routine. Thank you for posting! What a blast from the past.
OMG, I am in love with the bars and floor routines! I competed the routines in the next cycle of routines (1997-2005) and they're rinky dink compared to this. And the routines the kids are doing now...eughh, I hate the music and they're so watered down. Especially L.4 bars.
i know!! who puts a STRIDE CIRCLE in a LEVEL 4 bar routine?? I mean, that skill is pointless!!!! plus i am a level 4 today and i hate the stride circle!! even my coach said it is pointless! =)
I remember these! These routines were so much prettier than the ones now a days... they are far more graceful. I was trying to explain the bar dismount to my level 5-7s and they couldn't understand! I may have to go back to practice and do it tomorrow :)
wow this is so interesting! these are like the OLD OLD routines. i competed the routines before the current ones which i think they changed in 2004? but wow these are soooo different. i LOVE the bar routine! it's so cool! but nowadays the bars and rarely ever that close together...
this is great! the routines were so much more graceful than they are now! or maybe it was just your beautiful gymnastics :) bars was AWESOME. judging does seem to have been easier then than it is now, though.
since you're a coach, i had a question...
i was a gymnast for a total of 12 years (on a competitive team for 4 of those years) and i quit just before my level 9 season. i was wondering, for someone with my experience, what would be the steps to becoming a coach someday?
You would just need to find a gym that wants help with their rec (non-competitive) program to start out with, and then you just have to have a very energetic and positive attitude & be pretty good at keeping a class busy and keeping kids smiling! From there, you can brush up on skills and how techniques have changed since you competed. If you turn out to be good at explaining corrections and you see a lot of good results when you coach, maybe they will let you try coaching team eventually! :-)
okay, thank you so much!! i just can't imagine a future for myself without gymnastics in it haha :) i'm assuming you were the same way! hope you're enjoying the coaching!!
Poor you. You had to vault on twinkies. Our vaults in gymnastics these days are easier for our hands to locate. Also, we didn't get to make up our routines in level 5. Are you still in gymnastics? I joined 4 years ago. Now I'm an optional. Your vid was really cool. I also think that old school gymnastics was harder than today's gymnastics.
Yeah, I'm a coach now, and you're right- the new vault is much more friendly! :-) We didn't make up our own routines either- these were the compulsory routines for level 5 at that time. I liked them though! I think some things are harder now but some where harder then.
o my goodness. old school level 5. seeing the floor routine and hearing the music just made me so happy. thank you for the video! I was watching some of the new routines, and they just weren't the same. and you did so good girl.
It took me a little over a year to go to level 5. I started gymnastics when I was 11 and went straight to level 4 after about a month of recreational classes. Then I competed one season of level 4 and went right to level 5. I was just lucky because I already knew a lot of skills before I started gymnastics! :-) Most people don't move that fast.
Well, I did compete in the AAU "Ladies Division" this past season just for fun (it's kinda designed for retired gymnasts), but I didn't do many difficult skills. I've got other videos up of that. I have to take a break because I'm pregnant now! :-)
That sounds like so much fun! I wish they had that where I'm from. I used to compete these old routines too :) I have them on DVD, but I have no idea how to make them into a youtube video
I know you posted this a year ago, but how did you get involved with AAU "Ladies Division" gymnastics. That sounds like something I would be interested in!
hahaha ohh memories from the 90's.. i remember i used to think it was so cool when i did it but looking back on it that floor routine they made us do was pretty terrible haha.. between the choreography and the music it was just bad haha for levels 4, 5, and 6.. the ones now are so cute! i wish i was a kid now so i could do them instead!
haha do you really? i dont know maybe its because i did this routine about 8 million times in level 5 and level 5 open (which i think they got rid of?) but i like the new ones waay better than these.. with the exception that these bring back so many memories.
I competed the one between this d the one they have now in 2004. But I know what you mean with the memories.. I loved compulsories, but now I'm glad to be away from it.. though it was fun too :D
aww.. I only competed level 4 with these routines. The year afterwards was when the routines changed! So I never remembered the level 5 and 6 routines. This is great to see!
It's funny to see that the elements on floor and beam (and of course vault) seem alot the same as now. They've gotten a little less creative with the choreography and music though, in my opinion. Can't wait to hear the new music and routines, if I'm not mistaken, aren't they changing the compulsory routines this year?
Nope, the current routines will be used for awhile because this is only the 3rd season of using these ones. I think it's every 8 years that they change them.
Kasie! You're on everyone's channel, that's so funny! And I'm impressed how much you know about gymnastics :) I'm still clueless about it, I guess it's better that way so I'm not in the coach's face! LOL!
I know! I loved the bar routine too...it was my favorite event (and it's still my favorite to coach...haha), but yeah, I really liked those routines. The music could have been better though...lol. :-)
I'm a coach now. I competed gymnastics with this set of routines... I think the new bar routine is harder than the old ones, but beam and floor were harder back then for all the levels!
I agree with you. I'm a coach now too. Bars was easy back then, but I believe I was more well-rounded as a gymnast than my kids are now because of floor and beam. After I found this old video, I had my level 5's try round-off back extension roll connections, and they had a hard time! lol :-) Sad, I know!
Thanks! Actually, I think the routines now are harder than they were then...well, I think bars is harder now, but you might be right about the other events. :-)
