The problem with eliminating social security and depending on financial investments to to fund your all of your retirement is that you cannot know if you will get reasonable returns going forward for your investments. Right now 10-year treasury bonds and bank accounts are yielding less than inflation. There is no security at all in 401K. I think we need to keep the minimal social security safety net just as it is. Try to save and invest for more of course.

The gov't is NOT taking care of everyone from "cradle to grave." The purpose of S.S. was to lessen the severity of future economic downturns. With wealth so concentrated in the hands of a few, & jobs being outsourced right and left as companies take advantage of cheap labor in third world countries, forcing multiple unemployment periods in many people's working years. It's almost impossible for most people to be able to save ENOUGH $ to live 25-40 years after retirement.

Although those who work have money stolen out of their paycheck without their consent with the promise of possibly collecting a small monthly sum later in life, many end up getting less than they put in and some pass away before they even get the chance to collect it. The thing about SS versus 401K and other retirement plans is that if you die, the govt keeps your money but 401K, etc. goes to your estate.

Until the early 20th century, most people worked up until just a couple years before they died (remember, people didn't live as long either). Today, with employers looking mainly to hire younger workers figuring that older people aren't able to work as efficiently or effectively, Social Security is more vital than ever.

FYI-- are you aware that over 80% of the "red" states" have received more $ in federal aid than they have paid in taxes every single year for the past 30 years, while 67% of the "blue" states have paid more in taxes than they've received in aid. North Oaks, Michigan - the City owns no roads nor any property. Each lot owns half the road in front of it. They aren't having problems. If there's demand for roads, parks, medicine and there's money to be made, then the market will accommodate them. I don't agree. It's the one thing that people can count on for some stability after retirement. As long as it's in the hands of the government, there's no way it can be tampered with. Privatize it, there's a risk it will be gambled away by financial brokers trying to make a profit.

Social Security & MediCare currently oprerates at less than 1.5% expense cost. If the ReBullCrapican repeal Wall Street reform and their Wall Street buddies get Social Security & MediCare the operating cost will rise to 18% to 24% that is the ponzi scheme.

Social Security was created because if there is a stock market crash and a bank fails, anyone who put their savings in the bank will lose them for good. The telex business as well as the horse and wagon are all done in by modern inventions. We don't even pay our bills by regular mail any longer. Here is the problem with SSI. It is not popular, it is not sustainable. However, its socialist creators made it such that there will always be a large number of people who don't want to see years of SSI contributions to this ponzi scheme be for naught. That, and there will never be any money in the trust fund so you cannot pay them off and and replace it! No one will rather put their SSI money into SSI over a restricted savings account you cannot withdraw from until age 65. No one!

The problem with eliminating social security and depending on financial investments to to fund your all of your retirement is that you cannot know if you will get reasonable returns going forward for your investments. Right now 10-year treasury bonds and bank accounts are yielding less than inflation. There is no security at all in 401K. I think we need to keep the minimal social security safety net just as it is. Try to save and invest for more of course.

The gov't is NOT taking care of everyone from "cradle to grave." The purpose of S.S. was to lessen the severity of future economic downturns. With wealth so concentrated in the hands of a few, & jobs being outsourced right and left as companies take advantage of cheap labor in third world countries, forcing multiple unemployment periods in many people's working years. It's almost impossible for most people to be able to save ENOUGH $ to live 25-40 years after retirement.

Although those who work have money stolen out of their paycheck without their consent with the promise of possibly collecting a small monthly sum later in life, many end up getting less than they put in and some pass away before they even get the chance to collect it. The thing about SS versus 401K and other retirement plans is that if you die, the govt keeps your money but 401K, etc. goes to your estate.

Until the early 20th century, most people worked up until just a couple years before they died (remember, people didn't live as long either). Today, with employers looking mainly to hire younger workers figuring that older people aren't able to work as efficiently or effectively, Social Security is more vital than ever.

Will we pay a toll every time you turn onto a new road? Who decides which roads will be built and where? North Oaks, Michigan - the City owns no roads nor any property. Each lot owns half the road in front of it. They aren't having problems. If there's demand for roads, parks, medicine and there's money to be made, then the market will accommodate them. Take the black market for instance, endangered species, drugs, slaves, it's grim but true - money is a powerful motivator.

They do research on weather patterns so we as a people can be better informed about the dangers of mother nature. Same with the CDC. Research is VERY expensive and more often than not fails to yield useful information (although the information it DOES provide is priceless). Adequate funding for research is vital if we are to remain an advanced nation.

I'm 44 and I will pay into SS my whole life and probably receive nothing when I retire. Every dollar being paid out of SS now is borrowed money.
The US pays $500 million per DAY in interest.
We cannot afford it.
SS needs to be phased out, as well as all other federal welfare programs.
We did a much better job at charity before the new deal.

I don't agree. It's the one thing that people can count on for some stability after retirement. As long as it's in the hands of the government, there's no way it can be tampered with. Privatize it, there's a risk it will be gambled away by financial brokers trying to make a profit.
Cut spending somewhere else, not by eliminating our social security. It's extremists like you and Angle that we need to be careful of.

Social Security & MediCare currently oprerates at less than 1.5% expense cost. If the ReBullCrapican repeal Wall Street reform and their Wall Street buddies get Social Security & MediCare the operating cost will rise to 18% to 24% that is the ponzi scheme.

Social Security was created because if there is a stock market crash and a bank fails, anyone who put their savings in the bank will lose them for good. Privatizing it would essentially defeat that purpose, and it would become no different than a privatized retirement plan (which are all giving less benefits these days).

@theamericano33333 - Postal service is like the pony express, it is getting outdated, what with all of us writing on the internet instead of mailing our letters at the post office. The telex business as well as the horse and wagon are all done in by modern inventions. We don't even pay our bills by regular mail any longer. So in essence, they are loosing money but that is the way it goes. Social Security was passed for people after the crash of 1929. People were not saving on their own.

However, its socialist creators made it such that there will always be a large number of people who don't want to see years of SSI contributions to this ponzi scheme be for naught. That, and there will never be any money in the trust fund so you cannot pay them off and and replace it! In addition, we ARE in a crisis that is largely the creation of the GOP's 8 years of catering to big busines. Thirdly, fully 80% of the current national debt was run up under JUST reagan/bush/bush! It WAS deliberate and the goal was to create a budget crisis, eliminate SS and privatize it.

You are the perfect example why we should vote for Sharron Angle, who has had the courage to speak against the Department of Education. Our public schools have FAILED.
