SOLYNDRA!!!!! Hellooooo!?! This just doesn't work! Private companies are already doing a better job at making green products than the government ever could. Just let the free market work people!
The EPA passed beneficial environmental regulation that keeps companies from dumping chemicals into US ecosystems. Ever heard of cuyahoga river fire or Love Canal?
Remove the government - and with it the tax collector, and the hoarde of beneficiaries of force collected government spending & debt - and away goes all your problems.

@NikolajsenNiklas You ignore what we know about human nature. google bystander apathy experiment 1968.
would you drink tap water from china. or beef from their supermarket or meds? we need govt to make sure people dont try to pass off stuff that would hurt us or dumping chemicals. you guys dont think much
The more power the government has over the the market, the more profitable it is for corporations to invest in lobbyism instead of innovations and improving their goods and services.
It's just wrong to say, they are using their power not wisely and i would do it much better.
It's so funny that she can't put 2 and 2 together, that the more gov has to give, the more lobbyists will ensure that the firms or industries they represent will get the money. She is like all big gov liberals who are absolutely sure that the only problem with gov is that we have the wrong people there! Oh, if only we could find angels willing to become politicians!
Also global warming is complete bull too. Yes the climate is changing but its not man made. Do you recall that in the 1980's people were saying that we were heading towards another ice age? How could the climate have changed that much that we can go from ice age to meltdown in 20 years? And you claim that in 5-10 years the sea levels will rise well here's something to think about, scientists can barely predict what the weather is going to be in less than a week. Get your heads out of your asses!
Okay lady if you got off your high horse you could clearly see that your "great recycling" is doing more bad then good. Think about it does it really make sense to have extra trucks going around and picking up and emptying extra bins? No, that wastes more gas than it saves. And we can only recycle about half of the things we put in our recycling bins. So it would be more logical to stop recycling so we can ge those extra trucks that waste gas off the road and actually make a difference.
I like the message of this video but to be fair not all of it is honest. A- The biggest bill is Medicare/medicaid, war comes in 3rd but Obama has cut it which is good. B- Small farmers ALSO get tax subsidies C- It is never going to happen, people tend to complain from inside their homes
Did anyone hear one plan to reduce the budget deficit? Also she basically said revert everything we're spending on she doesn't like and put it in things she likes. So she's saying spend the same. This should have been titled "Story of Annie Leonard's Shopping List".
Wow. "I believe in paying taxes not just because its the law but because its how I invest in the better future I can't afford to build on my own. You know that future that we all want" She knows what I want? She could send in extra taxes - but won't - thats for others - shes done enough. So let me get this - she does not think millions of americans demand that big miltary and all the "stuff" those industries make. Choice is right. Her own statist system is out of control and she is upset?
Seems you like to blame people that believe they work for "the government". If someone else is "the problem", what can we do besides complain? Conversely, if we're "the problem" could we also change and become the solution? If personal accountability and law interest you, I suggest googling "imbatman57" and "WikiOfSolutions"...
Capatalism as a whole has got to go, you cant take care of people when the motivations of financial reward tell you to stomp on there heads, example medical care. BUT HOW CAN WE AFFORD IT? that should be the 2nd priority to the first being 'LETS HELP PEOPLE IN PAIN'
I'm a massive advocate of the venus project there channel is TVPMEDIA check it out. Its the only way i can see everything working out, its far fetched but with enough supporters who knows..
The U.S. does not meet anyone's definition of "broke". We are the wealthiest country on Earth. We would not have a deficit if the Republicans had not gotten us into two wars and cut the taxes on the richest Americans. Republican propaganda wants Americans to believe that if we cut all the government programs which help average Americans and give all our assets to the top 1% of the richest Americans everyone will be happy.
I agree with To Save a Nation. There's this assumption out there that if only we picked the right few people to manage all our money and pick the right programs to spend it on, we would all be happier, healthier, and more safe. How about we try something different: each free person use the fruits of his/her labor as he/she sees fit. Reduce government spending ACROSS THE BOARD and then those who support solar panels can buy them or buy electricity from companies who employ them.
Nice theory - but you are completely forgetting what it takes to run a town, city, state & country. What you are suggesting is chaos. Try Somalia for your idea or see what not paying any [hardly] taxes does to a country like say, ummmm Greece.
Sadly this video highlights part of the solution as still giving subsidies, but to just give subsidies to "good" companies that are "helping" instead of "bad" ones. All subsidies will turn into Dinosaur subsidies. Evidence today! Subsidies are the status quo and they are the problem; better subsidies won't fix that. Politicians have been trying this for decades and look where we are! End them all! End the ability of politicians to pay back their special interests, even the ones you agree with.
money is just an idea, and the federal reserve can make as much of it as it so chooses, which it then loans to the gov't at interest, where do you think money comes from in the first place?
Subsidies should not go to profitable companies. They should go to livability and health only. Public transport, bike lanes, police and fire, health care. Not to companies packing high fructose corn syrup in our food or to support multi billion dollar oil companies. I wish we could stop pretending gas is so cheap and pay it at the pump like other dignified countries do. It will drive better choices.
I would really love to debate this woman. I'm sure she would walk off just like the last socialist I debated. History will prove Keynesian economics was wrong. Hopefully then we can finally get the Free Market that the founding fathers intended.
I can agree with you on the DoD getting way more than needed, but we do not need to be taxed more and we do not need to tax and regulate businesses more (that's what makes them go overseas).
So we should stop giving handouts to companies you don't like and start spending it on companies you approve of? How about we just stop giving money to corporations altogether?
Exactly. Where she goes wrong is that she thinks that subsidies are goo as long as they go to "the right places." Who determines the "right place" Solyndra and Greenplace Solar failed and they were "good" investments. just get to real capitalism and not subsidy run corporatism.
@bryallen1987 i think for the most part you are correct, but sometimes, some industries couldn't get started and go forward without some help. How much help and too whom is the question for sure. Extreme cutting edge stuff maybe like fusion power that would benefit everyone as a whole maybe? People could actually vote on who to subsidize even.
Everything will be sunshine and rainbows as soon as the government takes over right? Thanks but I would rather be broke than be broke and live under a big brother government.
She is talking about Keynesian economics, look it up. It's when the government uses subsidies to minimize conjunction in the economy, not a bad idea at all... gives the economy a push in the right direction. However, these subsidies are being claimed by sneaky lobbyists for giant corporations who don't even really need it and THAT is the problem.
Who should get what subsidie, should not be decided by letting two lobbyists debate against each other, it should be decided by a panel of intelligent economists working for the government!
"It's when the government uses subsidies to minimize conjunction in the economy,"
Which is ripe for corruption, as you just pointed out.
When you allow people to gamble with money that isn't their, but the Gov'ts, they act wildly, and that counters the natural balance of the Free economy system.
It just creates a bubble, and leave you set up for a huge correction (recession).
The Chinese are going to experience this, we got a taste of it with Solar corp., and more.
It's going to happen to China, that has nothing to do with beliefs, that's fact, one they admit to, hence why they're trying to "cool down" GDP, they're growing beyond what they can sustain.
You know what's also a fact? 8 different energy alternative corporations that Obama supported with 100s of millions in taxpayer money, went bankrupt.
What she is pushing, I'm not buying. This is propaganda from the left targetting our children. It favors an agenda that is both bad for the economy and bad for the environment.
The fact is, government is not capable of efficient operation by its very design. WE the PEOPLE must do the work and make those changes. The government needs to stay OUT of our business and clean up its own corruption.
This lady is not delusional, it is not socialist to think that government can solve problems. The whole point of government is to solve problems and to maintain order...yeah, you might think that none of it is working, well without government things would be much much worse! And, taxes are not extortion. They are an important and necessary part of the upkeep of a nation. If there were no taxes, we would be in a much worse place than we are now. So everyone quit your bitchin.
Look up LearnLiberty's response to Story of Broke. They're a group of economists that teach people the real story behind just about everything.
We don't have capitalism, and haven't for awhile. Subsidies and war mongering make us by definition fascist. But we shouldn't become socialist either. if you think socialism works, read about east berlin.
The fact is we need to for once trust markets. I promise the wealth gap will decrease, and we'll have better healthcare and education.
this video doesn't make since. you say that the government doesn't know how to spend our money, but argue that corporations should pay more money to the government that doesn't know how to spend money. Also you live under the delusion that the government "creates a better future." despite this inaccuracy, what is a the better future? who is to decide? the government? wait! by your own admission the government doesn't know what to do. everyone wants something different. (free market)
guess what? there are over 100 Million households in the United states. Retrofitting 2 million homes for solar power, unfortunately, doesn't do jack shit.
this lady is so stupid man, she doesn't know what she is talking about........................please don't listen to this stupid lady. If you want to understand what wrong with the economy go talk to a professor and most importantly do your own RESEARCH.
We'll always need a military because there will, always be a threat no matter how many people go anti-war. I think we should always be prepared for an attack on ourselves or our allies.
I agree other than the point on military. Clean, energy subsidies fail. Just look at solyndra. Subsidies of any kind are not the answer. The government's,purpose is not to create jobs and run business. As of late they've only been selling them.
And if u cut military like wat obama did the day this comment was posted I hope ur prepared for the result. Say some nasty rouge nation (like iran) decides to go to war with u. It would be easy today. But tommorow you would have a full scale invasion and no one to save u. I hope u like the feel of a warm revolver pressed against your skull.
What if the future I want is different than what you want? Are you going to be just like the current system and force me to pay into the future you want? You are just the same as that dinosaur economy you attacked. Taking my money and subsidizing things I don't want. Let me keep my money and spend it the way I want.
@cometaa12 what i think she's trying to say is since the gov't won't stop taxing us, it's better they invest that money in better things to make the world a better place to live for current & future generations - the future she's talking about. A future that benefits everyone since everybody is contributing. After taxes everyone gets to make a choice about how they want to spend that money. The taxes the gov't take is the problem nobody gets to make a choice about that. jst my thought
@sweety2441 Or they could just not tax us as much and I could invest it. Say I want to invest in batteries, I could put money in a battery company by buying some of that companies stock. It is not the job of the government to take my money and give it to the companies they want(subsidizing), nor is it this woman's job. It is my money and I should pay simply for the essentials like the military and police, fire, ems. The rest will be taken care of through the free market economy.
how is the government able to decide what is better? are you saying that they are not doing what they think is better now? I'm with cometaa12, people should invest in people, not government. people decide what is better for their future; something the government can't do for everyone.
@MuskratandRatman please don't feel offended about what i said, i was just saying what the lady was trying to say in my point of view..there are too many questions you asked and i am not an expert. Just like everyone else, i just stated an opinion. I respect your opinion as well. i'm sure each person has an individualized utopian world in their mind of how they want their present and future to be, i have mine but again it's far from turning into reality.
I'm not offended i just don't like the idea that the government can "give us a happy life."You are saying the government should do what is best for the people. I am saying that, odds are, they already doing what they THINK is right. I'm saying that the government can never what is right, only a free market of free people can decide. read Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations and you'll understand.
I have just gotten dumber by watching this video. So everyone just has to pay more taxes? And the EPA has been a pivotal in developing the most powerful nation? The EPA has done nothing but hurt this country. If you are so hell bent on making sure we all pay more taxes, then bring back that check book and make sure you include some more zeros. I do agree that NO ONE, person or business, deserves a tax break or subsidy, but seriously, go read an economics text book, because we are in debt! idiot
We are broke. We have 65 trillion of unfunded liabilities and you are talking about saving 100 of billions on subsidies. Maybe you should take a math or economics class, because if we are not broke then I do not know what broke is. There is no feasible way to shift money around and pay down our debt. Our Fiat curreny will be the end of this great nation when we can no longer borrow to pay our bills and are forced to monetize the debt.
Sorry Annie but you once again have produced another video of half truths. Government subsidies are bad all around. What you may think is a good subsidy is another persons waste of money. We can't all agree on what's good. You think wind and solar are great and I think they're an enormous waste of money. The one thing we agree on is getting government money out of the oil company's hands. But don't turn around and give it to your buddies in the green movement. 2 wrongs do not make a right.
Here's the message: we, the people, have a right to protest and stand up for what we believe in, and we should uphold the responsibility of taking care of each other. that means getting of your lazy ass and protest what's going on, be honest, and just work. tell those unemployed moochers to work for public works projects. let's make the world work
Nuclear reactors are actually energy efficient as well as friendly to the environment. What happens is we have rods of uranium. We then make the atoms within the rods of uranium split, this creates lots and lots of heat. This heat then makes steam and this steam powers turbines. Also the steam iss completely safe for the atmosphere. Although the uranium is bad for the environment there is very little uranium because the atoms with in the metal continue to split for many years.
Agree: 1. The DoD does receive more than it should.
Disagree: 1. Taxes are extortion. They are not optional so even if you're "ok" with it shouldn't be forced on anyone.
2. Companies will thrive through being the best. Subsidies attract leeches. They're stolen funds given to another.
The government is OUT OF MONEY. Have you not been paying attention to borrowing from China and monetizing the debt? Government failure at schools and healthcare are signs that they should leave them alone.
@17LibertyOrDeath76 So, how are you going to run the country? Clean water, roadways for your fossil fuel car, law, etc? No taxes? Good luck with your wreck of a country.
This is what is wrong with our educational system. Let me just say you watched the entire 8 minute teaching video. Then, let me just say you completely didn't understand a single solitary second of it. Cheers !
“What if we got as protective with our tax dollars as we are with the rest of our money? What if we told our government what we want with our money?” This is an easy problem to solve. Give the money back to the people so that the government doesn't have it to spend in the first place. I don't want to be forced into electing a person who is going to spend my money for me. That's something I would gladly do myself, if only they would let me.
what if a person bugeted like the current US goverment borrowing 1.65 trillion this year, added to the 14 trillion we already owe and pay nothing down on, means we are more than broke, we should be bankrupt. even a child could prob tell you that. how many honerable military veterans would be out of work if the country they proudly serve fired them!! taking money away from one place and giving it to another is called income redistribution, COMMUNISM. like her, this video is stupid.
And why the hell do the richest 1% get tax breaks? IT'S SO UNFAIR! They have more money, they should pay more! I don't know who got the idea... They should at least pay the same as everyone else. And tax breaks for corps too. It's unfair to pay corps money to help them and not ask taxes even when they're swimming in money.
@PantherPictures "And why the hell do the richest 1% get tax breaks?"
Because they're the ones in good with the government. But regardless, the tax breaks are good and should be kept, ideally extended to all classes.
"It's unfair to pay corps money to help them and not ask taxes"
If they're failing on a free market, then it's quite obvious that they're doing something wrong and that the consumers have chosen against them. Helping them is nonsense. Why privilege a company that people dislike?
We do throw money towards unnecessary corporate welfare, but based on the history of "green" energy initiatives, as well as how government allocates money, I doubt such green investments will be any different from Enron or Solyndra.
@StateExempt I agree with you. We actually do throw money through corporations, and a lot of it. And green investments don't really go well. Capitalism doesn't mate with green investments. If the number one goal of capitalism is to get profit above everything, how should they care about laws or the environment?
I don't know how anyone could ask this question out of genuine curiosity. Ask yourself why anyone would care about laws. The answer is the same.
"...or the environment?"
Because damaging the environment invariably results in damaging someone's property. If the government actually recognized that and defended private property rights, we wouldn't be having this discussion.
We do need to end the wars and end subsidies but we sure don't need to subsidize "green" energy or whatever bureaucrats want, because that just leads to more handouts to lobbyists and special interest groups. Stop subsidizing coal and wind energy can beat coal in the free market (i'm an electrical engineer I promise this). People confuse free markets with what Republicans actually do, which is subsidize the rich. This happens because Republicans are full of crap, they say one and do another.
What she wont tell you is that the Department of health & human services spent 909 billion in 2011 and social securaty spent 800 billion both dwarf the 739 billion by the DOD. So in the end the millitary spends less then a fith of the 3.8 trilion the gov ate up last year. Oh and if u add the states Gov spending was over 5 trillion or 33% of the total economic output of the US or more than Japan(4.3T) the 3rd largest economy. These are all numbers off the Office of Management and Budget site
This is a good way of hashing out this issue for people that are just beginning to wake up to what you've aptly called "The Dinosaur Economy". However, you're missing the causative factor when you propose redirecting the subsidies towards the "right" investments. Subsidization is the basis of the dinosaur economy, the very point being the handicapping of competition on the behalf of establishment interests. Remove the corrupt element and you still have the problem of Economic Calculation (Mises)
@classiclibertarian Relative to income, we all pay what feels like our share regardless of personal income. The problem with complaining about wealth is that above the poverty line, dissatisfaction with disparity is a moot psychological complaint.
I agree that we shouldn't be subsidizing companies like big oil... or Solendra... the federal government shouldn't subsidize anybody. The idea that government can pick a good investment, isn't capitalism, it's crony capitalism. Sticking the term 'Green' in front of it doesn't make it any better.
@g4macdad Social Security is an "entitlement" because contributions to the program are forced. You're probably thinking of it as a disability benefit for scam artists rather than a social program to benefit the working who are disabled through age or misfortune. Mainly, Social Security is designed to get old people out of the work force to open jobs for younger people.
@g4macdad You got slammed by the uncensored truth according to me biotch. Be silent and take it like a man. Yeah, the U.S. government conspired to expel the Ruskies from Mars by shooting a cruise missile at the Pentagon and bombing the WTC in 2001. OCCUPY FOREVER!
Jesus this video is so off. The top 1% pay 30% of the taxes. The top 1% is the reason this country is so wealthy to begin with. Leeching off of them isn't what will fix the country.
@dangeresque429 it's the .001% that is the problem. 99% is just a slogan. 400 people in the US own more wealth than the rest of the entire population of the USA.
@kimhunter2 Why is that even a problem? Are you implying they got that money through theft? That they have wealth because others don't? In a free market, the opposite is true, you only gain wealth by increasing that of others.
@dangeresque429 yes.. theft is a very good description. See Oh Canada- The Movie (on youtube) It explains (with humour) how our monetary system has been manipulated over the last 40 years to amount to theft.. yes, very good word. (same in the US)
Our entitlements are the real problem. The school system is the most funding system in the world asides from Switzerland. And the military is about 25-30% of our spending everything else is entitlements like medicare, medicaid, social security, and other things the government shouldn't be providing. The government should protect my life, liberty, and property; not provide me, or anyone else, entitlements.
The story of broke is the story of special interests disguised as "productive purposes". End all subsidies now, end statism and let the people decide. Capitalism works perfect, it's your socialist interventions that produce unemployment and crises.
down with subsidies period! If people want to achieve and accomplish things it can be down without government. WE can make schools better. WE can make the earth cleaner. WE can control big oil big gas. If that's what the American people want it can all be accomplished in the home and in the free market. Expecting the government to do it is a complete pipe dream. They are inefficent
Defense is the largest expense? This is the biggest problem I see with the video. I looked it up & as a single expense Social Security is larger than the whole defense dept. Also, if you combine Medicare & Medicaid, they are bigger than defense expenses. Part of the problem is huge amounts of defense spending, but it's also huge entitlement spending on things like Social Security, Medicare, & Medicaid. Unless we address defense spending AND these 3 programs, we won't make significant progress.
@FinalLugiaGuardian I suspect the figure is referring to discretionary spending. Social security isn't a choice, it's a promise. Regardless, this video is propaganda any way you look at it. The video doesn't even attempt to explain why the government does what it does. There are usually rational reasons reflecting widely accept economic paradigms rather than political corruption (which is nevertheless a very significant issue).
@Ieatutube Point taken. However, the problem with government promises like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid and a few other programs that include mandatory government spending is they account for around 55% of the budget expenditures (remember that's not including Defense spending). Every government program has to be on the table to get back to fiscal solvency. The truth is, we may have to do Social Security and Medicare a bit differently in the future for the US to remain fiscally sound.
There is so much factually wrong with this I don't even know where to begin. And how about this idiot "I don't mind paying taxes..." yeah great, you keep paying moron. How about the military taking the largest amount? Ummmm... I seem to recall social security, medicare and medicaid DWARFING the military budget. Clean energy? Won't ever replace fossil fuel. Money spent lifting up companies that drag us down? You mean like solyndra?
For what it's worth, the *total* tax burden in dollars per capita in the US, when you combine all taxes at all levels of government, is second only to France on average. If you live in California, your total tax burden in dollars per capita, is higher than any other market economy on earth.
What do we have to show for it? Education sucks, infrastructure is sub par, social programs are mediocre at best. It's laughable to think such a monumentally corrupt and inefficient system can be tweaked.
...the video lost me at "the richest 1%". I guess complete idiots are incapable of understanding that unless there is complete equality in economic outcomes, there will always be a 1% and a 99%, and a 5%, and a 56%...etc. The bottom line fact is that in terms of actual dollars collected in taxes at all levels of government, the US is number 1 or 2 (depending on your states) in tax burden. If you live in California, you are #1 in tax burden worldwide with very little to show for it.
SOLYNDRA!!!!! Hellooooo!?! This just doesn't work! Private companies are already doing a better job at making green products than the government ever could. Just let the free market work people!

Seems you like to blame people that believe they work for "the government". If someone else is "the problem", what can we do besides complain? Conversely, if we're "the problem" could we also change and become the solution? If personal accountability and law interest you, I suggest googling "imbatman57" and "WikiOfSolutions"...

The U.S. does not meet anyone's definition of "broke".

End the ability of politicians to pay back their special interests, even the ones you agree with.

money is just an idea, and the federal reserve can make as much of it as it so chooses, which it then loans to the gov't at interest, where do you think money comes from in the first place?
tubertomp 3 weeks ago
Subsidies should not go to profitable companies. They should go to livability and health only. Public transport, bike lanes, police and fire, health care. Not to companies packing high fructose corn syrup in our food or to support multi billion dollar oil companies. I wish we could stop pretending gas is so cheap and pay it at the pump like other dignified countries do. It will drive better choices.

It just creates a bubble, and leave you set up for a huge correction (recession).

cometaa12 1 month ago 2
@cometaa12 what i think she's trying to say is since the gov't won't stop taxing us, it's better they invest that money in better things to make the world a better place to live for current & future generations - the future she's talking about. A future that benefits everyone since everybody is contributing. After taxes everyone gets to make a choice about how they want to spend that money. The taxes the gov't take is the problem nobody gets to make a choice about that. jst my thought
sweety2441 1 month ago
@sweety2441 Or they could just not tax us as much and I could invest it. Say I want to invest in batteries, I could put money in a battery company by buying some of that companies stock. It is not the job of the government to take my money and give it to the companies they want(subsidizing), nor is it this woman's job. It is my money and I should pay simply for the essentials like the military and police, fire, ems. The rest will be taken care of through the free market economy.

@sweety2441
how is the government able to decide what is better? are you saying that they are not doing what they think is better now? I'm with cometaa12, people should invest in people, not government. people decide what is better for their future; something the government can't do for everyone.

Give the money back to the people so that the government doesn't have it to spend in the first place. I don't want to be forced into electing a person who is going to spend my money for me. branhoff 1 month ago
FinalLugiaGuardian 1 month ago
@FinalLugiaGuardian I suspect the figure is referring to discretionary spending. Social security isn't a choice, it's a promise. Regardless, this video is propaganda any way you look at it. The video doesn't even attempt to explain why the government does what it does. There are usually rational reasons reflecting widely accept economic paradigms rather than political corruption (which is nevertheless a very significant issue).
Ieatutube 1 month ago
@Ieatutube Point taken. However, the problem with government promises like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid and a few other programs that include mandatory government spending is they account for around 55% of the budget expenditures (remember that's not including Defense spending). Every government program has to be on the table to get back to fiscal solvency. The truth is, we may have to do Social Security and Medicare a bit differently in the future for the US to remain fiscally sound.

The (north) american dream is a nightmare to most people. That's why there's a need to spend so much on the military.

'wind or solar, the most... ineffective sources of power'. That is factually incorrect Shrugmesilly245. I suspect you're talking utter bollucks.

If you live in California, you are #1 in tax burden worldwide with very little to show for it.

do you really say that there are dumb choices being made by the government... so we should give them more power to make decisions?
