  • this would be very fiddly with CDJ's i think?

  • does the pitch slider wear out easily? how do I know when my pitch has worn out?

  • i don't get it : |

  • Just checking that the only benefit of using two pitch controls instead of touching the platter/ jog wheel is that it looks more professional?

  • pro...

  • awesome house music!!

  • oh ya i spin dnb so its jus a bit more of a pain lol

  • big up dnb souljah!

  • been doin it for years, its hard to get used to not touchin the platter tho trust

  • i like to push the vinyl when its too slow and disguise it using the bassline

  • just stab ur pitch on ur headphone side try to keep the live vinyl as smooth as possible and realy on using the headphone vinyl. I mean i still touch the vinyl out of habit n it works so why not but u do get much smoother mixes if u learn ur pitch controll and try get it in beat without playing it live untill its in beat..sounds like comon knowlage but you wouldnt belive the amount of people who are stabbing the pitch while the records playing live or spinning the record while its plyin out.

  • Absolutely right...you don't mess with the pitch of the 'live' record it wrecks the smoothness and flow of the mix (and yeah the crown can tell!). Most important tip is learn how to beatmatch first and mix later, use a variety of styles of music as well to hone your skills.

  • like the breaks on those tables :-)

  • your so good

  • Another great video Ellaskins. This is a very good technique you're sharing with fellow dj's. I personally don't use it as much as I should, because I'm really comfortable using one pitch control in the mix. Btw I love the Samuel L Session tune you're using, I haven't heard it in ages.

  • Man, your awsome.

    I got stunned...

  • Very good video, I remember the first time I tried beat matching and thought I'd never get the hang of it. I ended up buying 2 of the same records and spending hours slowing one and speeding up the other....not too long before I could match them.

  • I Think that if you're so good to do this last technike, you will also be able to mix a track before it almost ends...

  • records pissed !

  • nice tune on the right...shame we didnt get 2 hear more.

  • to the people who dissagree with this method, watch all the videos. jonathan shows all the different methods in great detail, and always stresses that it is all about preference. if you dont like it, get off your high horse and check a vid that covers your favourite technique, and you will find that he gets it spot on too!

  • So I liked to learn that pitch riding, but when I allways use it alot like u, thosent the pitch slider wear out easily?

    Sry bad english.

  • It is all about practise. I do agree that for a lot of dj's using the pitch and touching the platter is fine, but for me i am used to just using the pitch. thanks j

  • It does depend on what turntables you are using, but generally it takes a lot more to wear out the sliders than that.

  • If you have technics, you don't have to worry about wear. They're virtually indestructible.

  • Does technics have magnetic sliders?

I'm sorry, must've been drunk when I wrote that comment because I really don't have any idea about slider-wear. I don't own any turntables :P

  • ddmitriy you have the same nae as me, where r u from?

  • this is absolutely spot on your obviously very experienced and your passing on golden tips here.i was sceptical of how long you could keep producing videos without being repetitive but you keep producing the goods.keep up the good work J,your a bloody inspiration to a lot of people mate

  • Nothing against mixing and DJing, but I just don't get it. Someone help me out...Why not just pre-mix the 'perfect' set of tracts at home on a PC, burn them on CD, and then just PLAY them at a gig while you sit back and drink koolaid??? Why all the hoopla, shtick, gadgets, etc? Sorry, I dont get it, but would like to hear some explanations. Thanks.

  • the problem with a pre mix is that you dont even know how the vibe, the feeling of the party is gonna be, while with the usual method of mixing u can change a song if you loose people from the dancefloor and put a better trrack. besides there is nothing similar to mix everything at the very moment (you can drink koolaid while u are mixing lol)

  • because before when there were computers and CDs people used vinyls at the discos to change them one after another, then it became the art of mixing. the other reason why DJs dont do it the way you said is because you never know exactly what kind of music would people prefer to dance to so you have all your cds/vinyls with you

  • See the beauty of dj-ing is not loading a track or tracks and letting them play and seeing what happens, the beauty about dj-ing, or one of the aspects are that you are in total controll of the music, you communicate to the crowd through youre music, you read them, keep the feel the mood of the dance floor and play accordingly, you cant just put a set together at home since you dont know how the crowd is going to react for one, and you wouldnt look too proffesional just sitting there.

  • Beautiful point made. However, knowing what type of crowd you're going to be playing for enables you to put a set together. Ex. Here in New York, black teens love the booty shaking songs like 2Live Crew's "I Wanna RocK" aka "Doo-Doo Brown", Rob Base's "It Takes Two" and there's a number of other songs I line up in succession that keeps them on the floor.

  • Ok, thanks for the answers and everything that was said makes sense to me. I've never been to a real DJ-ed party (not my thing), so I was missing that perspective. I can see all of ya'lls points. Thanks, and pass the Earl Grey.

  • Why go and see a band? Why go to the theatre? Why go to the opera?

  • These comments are a response to Culture Crusader, but for some reason, won't enter as a reply.

  • If you move one pitch up when pitching down on the other at the same time ,or the opposite you double the speed of increasing/decreasing , so it will be faster beatmatched . Cool tutorial , and like you say : It looks AND sounds better than touching the platter !

  • I think your making sound a little more complex than it actually is..

  • thanx top tip as alwayz!!!!

  • "sound as thought the record is pissed" ha ha ha ive just pissed myself at that saying. nice one j

  • Always great advice.

  • Yes good video and requires some practice like the whole just using the pitch too. Tho think that would be a bit difficult if the placement is so that the TTs are very much apart from each other.

  • a bit beyond me at this point, lol! regardless, great vid!
