  • Thanks for doing this for everyone. even a download. great work!

  • can u use any other sounds then the operator to make the 'wobble bass', I have sylenth plug-in, and it'd be cool to use the sounds of sylenth but to customize them with operator/beat repeat/etc.... Is this in any way possible? or is the operator the only customizable instrument to make a dubstep/dnb bass??

  • @jujment699 how do u get the sound i just get siren

  • great tutorial! but i am curious about the beat repeat... i have the track playing globally, but the beat repeat doesn't seem to be working as much for me in comparison to yours no matter what interval setting i have it set to. it only occasionally works. i believe i have everything set the same as on your video, but this is the only thing that i am having problems with.

  • @vinsonF i had the same problem.

  • @datboimiley1 how did you fix the problem?

  • @vinsonF i just used the operator he put up for down load. im still haveing trouble getting the beat repeator on my own sounds.

  • Good work bruh!

  • and it sounds really good

  • hey fraktal your sound is way betttter than those kids who rewired ableton through reason and are claiming it super hard saying that its exactly it. i appreciate your honesty in saying this is YOUR take on his synth, because there are too many dumb kids on youtube these days trying to emulate skrillex and FAILING

  • im sorta new to ableton. how do you map the nobs that you want?

  • Comment removed

  • Mate..

Your tutorial is the best on the internet related to this topic.. whole day of surfing.. and bam, finally someone not only does it to the point but also gives out his custom rack.. sweet.. I owe u a free stay and wheels if u ever make it to India.. Sherrin from Mumbai..

  • Yes! And the racks are fucking great.

  • Theres tens of thousands of views of these 'sound ;ike shrillex' threads, so I guess it's time to find a new sound.

  • The Beatrepeat won't work, I do not get that awesome effect when i turn on the Formant Shift.

I've tired to set my "Instruments" on the exact same settings as you had on the video, but it still wont work..

Any ideas on how to fix this?

  • what is this software called ?

  • @conantjulio Ableton Live

  • TY very much

  • The only problem I have is with the LFO. Something about it on mine doesn't work. I followed all your settings (even ones not mentioned) but I still get this weird siren effect. Any ideas?

  • @garenzy did you turn off your osc blocks in the filter section.. if you dont then it will oscillate the whole thing instead of the filter frequency only.. i turn mine off by default and i mention this in my other videos that my ableton is set up custom and not default (sorry) .

  • @EmcFRAKTAL Thanks for your reply. I just lowered my LFO amount to 10% (yours was set at 50%) and it sounded pretty close. Not quite sure what you mean by the oscillation boxes in the filter section.

  • @EmcFRAKTAL I'm having issues on this part :O For me there are no osc blocks in my filter section... if you mean blocks as in the Dest. A B C D blocks then my filter doesn't have any, and i am stuck hopeless... ): help!

  • @jujment699 so then ur on an earlier version of live? if so which one? bcus in live 6 and/or 7 we could choose osc blocks. but live 8 let us choose which osc dest blocks to use so thats why i ask .

  • @EmcFRAKTAL Ok i really wasn't that clear, and i apologize for that! You gave a really great tutorial, and i managed to figure out how to get it to sound like yours! But i'm the type of person that sees a problem and DOES NOT REST until its fixed... Kind of like Problem OCD you could say. Well i managed to get the sound, but i didn't do it even close to the way you did, and i have Live 8, but there is not option to turn off the filter Osc Blocks. Thats what stumps me. But you were great help!

  • @jujment699 aahh ok i see, well all you have to do is click on the blocks to turn them on or off. also if you right click you get another menu for the filter settings or the wave selector depending what view in operator you u r looking at. i dnt remember them all but they r there.

  • @EmcFRAKTAL I was having this exact same problem! somehow it was hard for me to notice that the dest. a filters were deactivated. Thanks for posting this!

  • For some reason, when I do the beat repeat part, absolutely nothing happens!! Any help?

  • @killersteve17 the beat repeater wont work unless the set is playing.

  • sick man, great info!!!

  • pretty good, but where did the 'instrument rack' to the left of operator come from and how do I get that there? Also there is no 'set to' option when I right click the Format, is this just cause I don't have a MIDI keyboard? Thanks

  • @greasykanadian the instrument rack is the operator just grouped (cntrl-G) . and idk what you meant by the set to option. but live is totally useable without a midi keyboard.just use your keys..asdfghjkl and th qwertyuiop as they all work in live.

  • Nice. Worked for me.

  • @TheWeswells awesome

  • @TheWeswells ss

  • You fucking rule. Thanks for the great tutorial my dude.

  • @Blakenaats thank you

  • Thank you, great tutorial!

  • How was the sound between 0:20 - 0:21 made? Thanks in advance.

  • sounds a little like Audio-Genesis when it comes to some things but it's cool

  • so I made it..! i am the 1000 suscriber..! i am glad for such honor..!

  • We love skrillex

  • dude this helped me so much!!!! but you and alot of other ppl "sampling" the sound and all w/o using the writing tool and what not where you gotta tell it which note to play and all... how you do that??? that'd be big help if you could tell me! (ex 3:09-12)

  • @zZounds1 sorry i didnt understand ur comment but if you mean how do i trigger the sounds . its with the laptops keyboard. press z a cpl of times to lower ur bass sounds.then press x to go up in octaves. im not sampling anything ,im making this sound organically and the writing tool is for making ur final automations. i play all my song's so there is not alot of automations on my tracks.

  • i just can't get the beat repeater to work.. everything is fine till I want to make sound like you on minute 9:25 it just doesn't repeat itself while changing the sound with the knob.... everyhing on my rack looks like yours.. but it just doesnt work...

  • @allsic the set must be playing globally to have the beat repeat's effect applied. it's not the same thing if ur just playing the clip.

  • Respond to this video... the set must be playing globally to have the beat repeat's effect applied. it's not the same thing if ur just playing the clip. if you look at the top of my screen you will see that the set is playing if it was not then the beat repeat wouldnt repeat.its an ableton thing sorry.hope that helps

  • 3 people have no idea how to follow instructions.

  • @mrdjchasm LOL

  • Every body complaining about how you can't get the tone, shut the fuck up and experiment. He gives you all the tools to find the tone you want.

  • @TheJazzSwings thank you so much. yes this is just a way to get his formant like sound but theres way more to do it. but why does every one want to make his sound exactly? idk but thank you for ur awesome comment.Bless

  • @EmcFRAKTAL I don't think many people understand the object of an art form, and the importance of individuality, I just recently started getting into the dubstep genre, and I really do think that there is room to really create honest, sick grooves. I am a trumpet player, I focus mainly on small group combo work, I never really saw myself getting into electronic tunes, but I realized that this is really the voice of today. Back when jazz was first forming, the voices were acoustic, now here is a

  • @TheJazzSwings I concur, I look at it like this , whenever a new artist comes out with a new sound it's important to respect it but it's also important to if you like it take it to the next level and make it your own. I too never thought I would be making electronic music after I've spent so long playing guitars, drums, and pianos and stuff.but I think that's part of the trade. You have to keep changing, to effectively relate how you feel to your audience.

  • @EmcFRAKTAL yeah man, you nailed it. There are really the two kinds of artists, the fundamentalists and the progressives, on the jazz scene, they got this cat, wynton marsalis, the guy is a die hard fundamentalist, and I think it is important to have those people because they live the music of the past, they bring it into the now, then they got a cat, roy hargrove, listen to his song "the joint" oh man, the groove is deep and sick, I am kinda pulling roys ideas into my own playing while

  • @TheJazzSwings listening to this new age electric dubstep tone. The wobble bass and growl synth kinda stuff, and with that, I think there can be a level of improvisation that will be really thrilling to hear. It's great, when you get lost in the past, you have to live to a standard, when you seek for the future, you are writing the standard.

  • Where did the instrument rack come in at 7:10? This is th point, at least it seems to me, where the video throws in something that wasnt explained and now I cant go further. Good so far tho

  • @mikelkroog you mean when the macros show up . thatsexplained in previous videos. its just simply opening the buttons on the rack ur building. the buttons are on the left of the rack. if you did not group the instrument yet then just hit cntrl G and then all will be there. hope this helps

  • @EmcFRAKTAL Thank you!!!!!!!!

  • @mikelkroog you're very welcome, anytime. Bless

  • I'm pushing the space bar, but there is nothing playing, and I've done everything that you did in this video.

  • I'm new to the whole Ableton thing, and I don't understand how to play the sounds that you're making. Could someone help me out?

  • p.s. subbed

  • @biglu30 thank you, much appreciated. Bless

  • Just want to say thanks for the racks! Still fairly new to EDM production and i can get sweeping bass but ive always had trouble with getting a nice crisp tone to glitch up.

  • Comment removed

  • Dude, the sound of your bass may not be the best on youtube (for the typical skrillex sound), but the techniques you are proposing are just terrific. Very well suited for a live performance where one could simply improvise with knobs and some keyboard notes ! Thank you very much ;).

  • @dotvoxel thank you , yeah the sound is not meant to be exactly like skrillex it's just to show you one of the techniques involved in getting his sound.. I don't want to create a bunch of skrillex clones you know. LOL

  • @EmcFRAKTAL Absolutely, I totally understand the purpose of this video, and it is actually a much smarter way of teaching things : propose some tools to solve a problem but not giving the solution.

  • Sweetness man. I've never dicked about with the vocoder when creating basses. Very neat!

  • i wouldnt use vocoder us the bit crush..much better sound

  • @DenemChikn I disagree the bit crusher is a good sound but it depends on which harmonics are being used in at the time.not all harmonics play well with the bit crusher. But that's just my opinion. Thanks, for the comment

  • @EmcFRAKTAL this is true. great tutorial by the way!

  • what is this massive ppl are bashing on???? im new to ableton and making electronic music, so sorry for my ignorance

  • @nickgt111 It's a plug-in that allows you to place LFO into a filter to make a wobble bass. I can't really explain it better than that since i'm terrible at explanations, but that's basically what people use it for. You can use it for other things, but thats mainly what it's used for.

  • @nickgt111 massive is a VST plug-in made by native instruments. Quite expensive it does some cool stuff but it's still very expensive and it's quite a CPU hog and it's not for the newbie user. But if you're looking to make growley distorted low-end bass you can do the same thing by using ableton's operator as that sound is mainly made by using FM synthesis.

  • In the intro, (around :27) you have a sound that you didn't address in the video. This is the sound I've been searching for. Could you be a little more specific as to how I might go about obtaining the deep growl similar to the one found in Scary Monsters?

  • where do i have to put this racks?

  • @Parnex sorry for the delay. Racks go inside your instrument racks folder inside ableton's library

  • HELP!! I'm doing everything per your directions, and when I turn on the LFO, you're getting the sound (obviously) that you get, and while I'm getting that similar sound, the pitch starts oscillating up and down. I'm doing everything even down to what you have selected on the screen within the instrument, but I can't stop the pitch of the sound from going up and down. Thank you (to anyone who can answer this) in advance :D

  • @TheZazProductions I think I fixed it, in the box underneath the physical wave when LFO is selected, there is the representation of the Algorithms (A, B, C, and D).. A and B were highlighted, so I clicked them, and they stayed colored, but weren't filled in with the color, and I seem to be getting the same sound you're getting.. sorry for the mixup!!

  • @TheZazProductions so sorry I didn't get to you in time I don't have my own computer at the moment so I'm really backed up all my mail but yes exactly figured it out so I'm glad to see that it was able to be fixed.

  • nice one! thanks! big up for using just ableton's stuff ...

  • The operator, I have set it just like it is set up on the video, but it doesn't sound similar to what is on your video.

  • great tutorial

  • @StyleIsAHabit idk y that is i just downloaded them and they work on this end.is ur ableton up to date??

  • Too bad this doesn't work. I've done this about 10 times and it doesn't turn out that way.

  • @dannylipscombe sorry dude you must also remember I always setup my operators MY WAY as a default.so i may have it set in a way yu do not. if so i apologize. but what exactly is ur problem. the operator or the rack assignments. i have been off 4 awhile as i have no more studio comp.

  • @dannylipscombe have you used the preset form the tutorial before, like he clearly says.

  • You have no idea what routing is. (those colored squares in different order). It's for subtractive or additive synthesis. ;) you can subtract (vertically stacked) or add (horizontally) oscillators. ;)

  • @bclaus0 fuck you arse, those boxes r algorhythms. i dont care wut yu think i was taught by an ableton trainer this method so fuk off. im tired of u idiots nit picking everything but the end result. i have no tie for ur dumbass. bye!!!

  • great tut!

  • thanks :)

  • SHUT UP AND ENJOY THE MUSIC!

    ╭∩╮(︶︿︶)╭∩╮

  • My beat repeat isn't working :( I do everything to a tee and macro everything but it refuses to work.. Any ideas?

  • @DoctorGrambeat the beat repeat only works when ableton is playing only...

  • @EmcFRAKTAL i have the same problem with the beat repeat, and what do you mean when ableton is playing only?

  • Comment removed

  • Hey I have a question. The beat repeat thing is fantastic. I really like the random cuts it does...one question though... is there any way to have ultimate control over when it does its thing and what it does? I'd like to be able to make it not random and be able to know when its going to do a bunch of cuts and repeat that you know? btw thankyou...so...much...for this video... opened up a whole new world for me!

  • @IamDjSparks hello, and ur very welcome. :-) ok just turn the chance all the way down. then just trigger the beat repeater with the repeat button. to control when it goes off. then use the grid and other controls to get more in depth with ur repetitions.

  • This is probably a basic question, but under the EQ Eight folder you have a previous preset you have created... How did you save those settings so that they show up on the list in the EQ Eight folder? In other words how do you save settings so that they can be viewed in other future projects?

  • @jdabull83 easy just make ur changes and then hit the lil diskette icon on ur effect or rack then click and it will save to the folder u want

  • @EmcFRAKTAL thanks

  • u should do radio

  • Comment removed

  • @dadurtydutch close but NO! it doesnt..thnx for trying tho, cheers!!

  • @EmcFRAKTAL lol! no beef here man :) But. Can you show me one song by skrillex with a bassline that sounds like this?....Plus I'm subbed to you. and love your tut

  • @dadurtydutch no worries ,i apologize i was trying to be funny.#fail . lol but any ways the tutorial is supposed to illustrate a technique in which to get that throaty formant sound using just ableton. to get his sound you have to use massive and resample from there but you still end up using abletons vocoder and i believe volcano by fab filter.to get that more skrillexy sound but i didnt want to get his exact sound just part of the technique.

  • @EmcFRAKTAL I got ya man. That needed to be said somewhere. Its good that your giving people sort of a building block to create their own sounds.

  • i like the non-input vocoder as a modulator idea as well

  • respect for using operator. been using it for half a year now and didnt know about the phase control! cheers! just one thing about the oscillator layout, the default one (vertical boxes) is all FM, not additive. and changing it to the box one didnt change the routing in this example. just a heads up :)

  • @lauriejmusic ok well operator is an additive synth it can also do subtractive synthesis. in ableton additve synthesis is achieved by adding the osc's to each other.also just adding harmonics makes it additive. but the subtractive synthesis is done by filtering the osc's.(as far as i have been taught). it says in the manual that operator is both. i appreciate the feedback as always tho.just more to sus out in ableton lol . i love it :-)

  • @EmcFRAKTAL yeah abletons the shit. well the thing is, the setup which shows a box leading into another box is known as FM (frequency modulation) rather than additive (which would be when the boxes outputs are separate)

  • @lauriejmusic ok kool, are you an ableton trainer.im curious or just learned in synthesis. i see what ur saying just not they way it was taught to me so im very curious...im all for challenging conventional knowledge but i wanna make sure of what im doing you kno. i hope yu kno im not trying to pick atcha but its important.

  • @EmcFRAKTAL nah i'm not an ableton trainer but i studied synthesis at university.. it's in the manual as well - the "box followed by a box vertically" setup is FM, not additive. additive is in that central window where you can "draw in" harmonics to the waveform manually. no worries man, i don't mean to sound like a dick either :)

  • @lauriejmusic ok no probs . i dnt have my manual handy as im moving, but what ur saying makes sense. good for yu as well for ur studies i admire that alot. also thanx for helping me learn something new.much respect. i will dbl check tho lol. but im sure ur right my friend . thanx again.

  • @EmcFRAKTAL no problems, you can also download the manual from Ableton's website. peace

  • hey great video but im not able to map to macro control could you help me out?

  • @JordannnM sure wuts up?

  • @EmcFRAKTAL When i right click the dials i dont have the option to map them to "macro 1" etc. like the macros arnt in the list of options for right click

  • @JordannnM ah ok, just highlight ur instrument then hit (cntrl-g) to group. the options only show up if ur instrument is grouped. then ur macros will appear. hope thats wut ya needed .if not lemme kno.ttl .bless!

  • OPERATOR FOR THE WIN!!!

  • @l3dse7en thnk you lol

  • Dude, this is one hell of a tutorial. I know everyone and their grandma's trying to do a "skrillex bass tutorial" but this is the most universally applicable of all of them. just wanna add a tip that will take this patch to the next level. I recommend dropping some form of multiband distortion just after the vocoder in the signal path. This is a great way to resonate particular freqs. try this too; create a new aux, throw a bandpass and dirt on it, send it to itself (carefully) sweep away!

  • @ticklesitter thnx so much for the advice (always welcomed) . i will give it a go that way .i like to run it thru my freq split rack then distort or bitcrush certain freqs that way (in an attempt to circumvent Ohmicide since i dont own it) .thnx again bruva, bless!!

  • @emcFRAKTAL Nah man, everything work fire downloading it, it's just when i try to open it in ableton live 8,ableton says that the file is brocken on the bottom left corner in orange.

  • @ace101guy yes it does that when there is a difference in versions.i have this prob when guys are using old versions and cracked versions too.mine is legit so i only have the newer versions racks available.to work the versions must be 8.1.5 and higher.im on 8.2.2 currently.sorry 4 the inconvenience .

  • I'm going to call this the best video ever if that's alright with you

  • @Prankxter lol,thnks so much,cheerz!!

  • Thanks so much man! Can't wait to try it out. One thing though, you DL version is broken or something ^.-

  • @ace101guy you mean the link or the device. if the device gives you an error it may not be compatible with ur version of ableton.mine is ultra current.sorry 4 the inconvenience

  • yo could you supply the racks for live 8 because the racks dont work ? btw , subscribed?

  • @NOXBEATZ sorry i do not have live 8.0 im on 8.2.2 . sorry i havent subbed yet.cheers!

  • yo dude i use my keyboard(computer keyboard) and my notes seem to be A LOT higher pitched than yours, how do i fix that?

  • @pokealong1227 no probs all yu do is use the X or Z to shift octaves on everything in ableton, drum racks and operators an such. Z goes down and X is up also C is lower velocity and V is velocity up. hope this helps

  • @EmcFRAKTAL your a lifesaver man thanks for the quick reply too!!

  • @pokealong1227 no probs ,i just happened to on here for a break lol. thnx for the sub as well, cheers!

  • Comment removed

  • About the routing at the end : The box is Osc 1 and 3 being modulated by 2 and 4. The line is Osc 1 being modulated by 2 which in turn is modulated by 3 and 3 is modulated by 4. So when using osc 1 + 2 there is absolutely no difference :) Cheers

  • Not gonna lie, if I had seen this tutorial prior to releasing my skrillex patch - I would of added a vocoder. You beat me on this one haha .

  • it says 'the preset cannot be loaded, it's probably broken'

how can i fix that? thanks

  • @dandaman469 it maybe ur version of ableton, that error comes up with different versions than the one that created the patch

  • how do u exactly group the racks together? and where did the instrument rack thing where u control the lfo come from?

  • @KuugaroxTV you right click and select group ,or hit ctrl-g and it does it. thats how you make a group. to group traxx just select them individually or use the shift to highlight them all then ctrl-g or right click etc. there you go. hope that helps

  • moved to ableton after 5 years with logic..... ableton has changed my life!

  • @paralelSun mee too!

  • damn thats some serious EQ right there!

  • thanks for the tutorial! this helped me learn some stuff not related to the skrillex bass, as well. basic macros and envelopes for example.

  • your fucking talented :)

  • @RodrBr0220 thank you so much!

  • That's a nice sound!

I could use that in my hard dance/techno choonz!

  • "skrilly" ^____^

  • i hope i can use it for fl studio :)

  • Great vid! Thanks for the explanation and the link!

  • fucking awesome bro. first time i found someone who's not using that damn massive synth. thanks a lot man! :D

  • @DJDavverMusic glad to help, unfortunately the robo synth sound is monoplized by the modern talking patch in massive but its only part of the whole skrillex experience .

  • @DJDavverMusic Not sure if it's been said already since this comment is 2 months old, but people use massive when it comes to Skrillex because Skrillex generally uses massive.

  • @YourFavoriteLesbo oh he does? awesome.

  • @YourFavoriteLesbo No, Skrillex uses Ableton Live 8. He has said in multiple interviews that he has and there are pictures of him live where you can see his computer screen with Ableton up and running :)

  • @steeleknightfootball Ableton is the DAW he uses, Massive is a VST you use within the DAW. He technically uses both, so you're not wrong. Massive also isn't the ONLY vst he uses, I'm sure, but for a lot of the wobbles and stuff, 90% of everyone will tell you that Massive is the way to go. Check it out if you haven't already.

  • @YourFavoriteLesbo Yeah I read that to oquick lol ;) lol I use Massive too. As well as a few other VST's from Native Instruments. But I find that Operator does the job just fine with the Dirty sound :)

  • @steeleknightfootball Unfortunately something I have no experience in, so I'll take your word for it. I've actually heard people use all sorts of different synths for dirty sounds, so I wouldn't be surprised. How is ableton as a DAW for electronic genres? How's the learning curve, I mean. Currently using FL and wouldn't mind picking up a second more widely used DAW.

  • dude your voice is awesome - do you mc as well?

  • @torment3d yeah i used to , still mc my sets wen i dj .thnx so much 4 the compli-comment bless! :)

  • Hey man, your tutorials are awesome. Definitely helped me in writing my own music. I gotta question though, where did you learn all of your skills for production, synthesizers, etc? I mean did you go to school for it or are you completely self taught?
