Speaking of budget loads, have you thought of testing the Remington UMC 115gr jhp #L9MM1B? I would like to hear what you think of that load as a seconday or backup load.
Here is the truth about ALL HPs results will differ dramatically depending on what clothing target is wearing the cloth will bond and become entangled with the round preventing it from expanding
The absurd cost of premium SD ammo makes the Winchester White Box very attractive. It's plenty good, don't need no magic boolits at $25 for a box of 20.
Penetration would be different when striking the rib cage or sternum, in a panic, life-threatening situation. What load/caliber/weapon would you recommend for primary self defense?
Yo Yo Yo killa aint no such thing as a high point glock! ya dumb azz mutha fugga, go back to playn black ops internet gangsta b4 som craka caps yo dome off while your tryin to jack his sh1t YA HEARD..
Interesting but not scientific. I would like to see a control of how a fmj reacts going through the same test media. Otherwise you can only make estimations. Thanks for testing though.
FMJ will blow through. I did a test on just water jugs with 9mm FMJ and it traveled approx. 36 inches. The newspaper jugs wouldn't be much different. I'm moving to another media late 2010, SIM-TEST. It is not ballistic gel, but very much in the ballpark.
Add Bone to your tests, This is the same round as the Winchester silver tip, just a different color and the scribbing (lol is that the correct word?) isn't as long for deeper penetration..
Very heavy load with low velocity that back in the late 80' early 90's gave the 9mm a bad reputation. The 147 round driven @ +P+ levels would be a good round.Mythbusters did a test involving shooting in a pool, the 9mm 147 grain bullet penetrated further than some high power rounds.
@boostimalaka1 thats because a high power goes too fast and tends to "fragment" on impact not expand, or if your talking about like a .223 FMJ it will indeed explode and penetrate right around 8 inches, the 147gr GDHP will penetrate around 15-17 inches
147g is good for suppressors but not a round I would carry in a normal PD load out. There are many other rounds with much more capabilities than this WWB round offers. Something like the Federal Hydra-shok +p or HST +p+.
Based on the shape/size of the hole. That jug is long gone, so can't look at. However, I will be retesting this again soon, with both the media jugs and water jugs only.
the WWB JHP are good rounds.. the paper filled jugs werent enough to expand the jacket.. there has been many tests of these rounds in other vids, through all water. 100 retention, does not over penetrate in dense tissue
I still don't digg why this bullet that penetrated all juggs is not a good solution for self defense? You might end up in a situation that penetration of the bullet will be more important then just having a JHP stuck somewhere. What happens if you have to shoot through a barrier - this 9mm bullet will definitely go where the JHP will stop half way though.
There are certainly instances where you may have to work through barriers, but that is more likely a scenario for LEO. Private citizens will probaby be face-to-face at conversational distances, as Jeff Cooper used to cite. There has to be a happy medium, and that's part of the debate. You want penetration, but you have to determine how far is enough with your chosen load. Taking a shot through a barrier will certainly be debated by the prosecuting attorney, in particular if you could flee.
You got good point. LE will use that penetrating power for shooting through windows or car doors. I heard that the 357Sig is a master for that purpose. ;-). One more question: what made you stick with the 9mm all these years?
Great vid! I'd love to see a video on Hornady's Critical Defense in 9mm. Supposedly the stuff that fills it's hollow point acts to keep it from clogging and makes for more reliable and consistent expansion.
Not planning on it. I'm trying to maintain some consistency with the distance. That load may have cleared at 25 feet, or at that distance it could stop in the 5th jug, which is still too deep of penetration.
nice vid man.....i agree thats a good secondary load you can have alot of jhp rounds for cheap...it would be interesting to see the same test but you firing from a further location...that might change the results
Wow....I'm kind of embarassed to say that this ammo is in my carry gun...on my waist...right now as I type this. The only reason why I have it though is because it is all I've been able to find. Ugh... Anyways TNO9 I'm new to carry. What is your highest recommendation for a carry load?
Go premium loads for concealed carry if possible, such as the Gold Dot, HST, Golden Saber, and the new Winchester PDX1 looks like a winner. 124 or 147 in 9mm, although there are some good 115 gr rounds. My preferences are the 124 +P Gold Dot and 147 gr HST....the latter is hard to locate.
Thanks for your advice, man. I used to use HSTs in my XD 45 for home defense until I got rid of that gun. Have you ever tried the Hornady Critical Defense? Those look very interesting to me.
Is there anyways you could re-do this test with the ballistic gel?

These ammo are not easy to find at wal-mart here in Knoxville TN, all they have is wwb ball.

We use this round ALLOT and use it for concealed carry. All of our "tests" show this to be a VERY capable round and it's very affordable.

I've generally had good experiences with WWB 115gr JHP and 147gr JHP. Can you redo any of these tests on either of these two rounds?

Hi There, could you do a penetration and expansion test on the Cor Bon 9mm +p 115 grain ammo.
i hear cor bon makes the best 9mm self defense bullet but i would like to see proof of it.

also, what makes you think it keyholed the last jug? that last jug was probably the only object dense enough to make the round expand.

9mm.....for now, Gold Dots and HST's. I do want to try the Winchester PDX1 and Hornady Critical Defense.
tnoutdoors9 2 years ago
I'm wondering if perhaps you had a failure to expand issue going on here that it passed through the last jug.
Might be worth your while to try it again and then let us know. Perhaps a part 2 to this vid or something.
Thanks TN.
gungadin777 2 years ago
my guess is that the denim clogged up the cavity not allowing the expansion..
