  • i got my surgery today on 2 lower one upper and got a syringe but was never explained on how/when to use it??? also, when am i able to gargle warm salt water as well as brush my teeth? should i just save the hassle and eat soup and congee for the next 2 weeks?

  • I thought i had to get rid of the remaining blood in the socket. So wil i just leave it there???

  • I got my wisdom teeth pulled out Friday morning, so three days ago, and I play the flute, I haven't practiced all weekend because my mouth hurts. If I play and practice my flute tomorrow and for the rest of the week will I get a dry socket?

  • P.s If Dry Socket DOES happen to you, make an emergency appointment to see you dental nurse and she will apply a dressing with Oil of Cloves with helps with the pain relief but slows down the healing process. I've had two dressings and the relief was incredible.

Clove Oil doesn't work for a long time but you can buy it in Boots or a pharmacy :) Hope I helped and sorry for the long message xxx

  • If you have Dry Socket then I know the pain you're currently going through and I feel your pain. For those who are unaware of the pain after an extraction. Learn from my mistakes and PLEASE take my advice as I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Wish you all good health xx

  • My advice is to not smoke if you do for as long as you possibly can or cause any sort of damage to the extraction area. Don't brush the area at all. But make sure throughout the healing process to rinse with salt water and (If you're in the UK) Corsodyl Mouthwash. If you follow these instructions carefully and be as gentle as possible you might avoid Dry Socket, it's into my second week and it still can be quite painful. The first week you will literally be in tears.

  • I had a tooth extracted on Friday 27th January so just over a week ago now and I got Dry Socket after 3 days of my extraction. Now.. They have it wrong, the blood clot DOES form within 24 hours it always pops up but I smoke, now if you cause suction in the mouth (Smoking, drinking through straws) the blood clot will burst and leave the bone and nerves on show. NO amount of pain killers however strong work even ones that are prescribed to you. It's extremely painful.

  • What do you do to not get a dry socket?

  • I got my wisdom teeth out 5 days ago and 2 days ago i got 2 dry sockets. I am in the most pain i have ever experienced. I can't sleep, it hurts to eat, and i break into tears constantly from the pain.

People, do what ever you can not to get a dry socket. It feels like there are knives in the back of your mouth stabbing you. The pain killers can take away the stinging but then with every heartbeat it feels like there is a rock being pounded into your jaw.

  • Hey Guys! She just explained what a dry socket is! Whoa! Unbelievable... I never knew she was explaining what a dry socket is until the very end! Anyways. I had my wisdom teeth extracted 3 days ago. No dry socket :)

  • i tried to eat a sausage a few days ago, i just got this syringe from my dentist that cleans ur sockets. All the chunks came spewing out, these were deep in the gap, a trick i came up with is tilting ur head backwards it gets even the toughest food particles out

  • I got all 4 wisdom teeth removed on thursday but I don't think I have any dry sockets, fuck yes

  • @divdawgd not so fast, still got 2 more wks to go.

  • @MzChelxoxo Im fine now, no dry sockets and my wisdom teeth doctor says it went well! (Seeing as the comment was posted 2 weeks ago)

  • @divdawgd i know it was posted two weeks ago, that's why i said u have to more wks to go[4 wks, 1 month]. i read from someone that they have to do this for a month, idk is that right? i'm getting mine out very soon. the only thing i'm afraid of is throwing up.

  • @MzChelxoxo Well the first 5 days for me were a pain, but after that the doctor gave me a syringe to clean the holes with a mixture of water and mouthwash. The holes have filled with gum now and I feel back to normal :).

  • @DrummerThatOwnz yeah no shit dude i agree. I usually do a pack a day easily, i got all 4 removed yesterday, smoked 2 before i got them done and haven't had any since then, and really, it's not THAT bad, mind over matter, trick is just keep your mind moving and don't think about a cig, i can feel my lungs about ready to rip out of my chest to go on a search for nicotine, but it's all good, i've just been taking one hitters through the nose LOL

  • i just had all 4 pulled out yesterday and i smoked a little maryjane today .... threw my nose.. and i got a terrible headache..

  • @ryukenhondaguile you smoking some poopy mexican schwag then

  • i just had all 4 pulled out yesterday and i smoked a little maryjane today .... threw my nose.. and i got a terrible headache.. FUUUUUUUCCKK

  • I am on day 3 of this 9th circle of hell!

  • @SSuperCuriouss you got a dry socket from mouth wash?

  • @PLKBanks nope. water would have done the same. i accidentally rinsed out the natural blood clot that forms.

  • @SSuperCuriouss im on day 6 right now,,im scared to get it,,i still brush my teeth just gently,,,how do yyou know if you have a dry socket? im very paranoid i might get it

  • i got a dry socket and the pain was not bad for me i just had a uncomfortable feeling

  • i have dry socket now from my tooth getting pulled...its the worst..

  • I smoked a day and a half after getting my back top left moler pulled, no dry socket.

  • @CynterianaLanae that wasn't really a question

  • Well if you must smoke do so very lightly and what I mean by that is suck very lightly trying not to apply suction to the socket you can even cover it with your tongue to prevent this.

  • I've been in a lot of pain for the last week since two molars were extracted. I wonder if this is what's causing it.

  • i've had a dry socket for 3 weeks and i havent had any pain whatsoever xD just sensitivity when i brush my teeth. but thanks for the advice on how to deal with it

  • @18yrsandolder It hurt a lot, but I'm assuming you don't have a dry socket since this was from a week ago.

  • @18yrsandolder yeah, it hurt like crazy. 10 times worse than having two impacted removed.

  • I SMOKED RIGHT AFTER A TOOTH EXTRACTION AND NO DRY SOCKET JUST DRY MOUTH LOL

  • When I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed, all impacted and at 14 years old, I had a dry socket that had to be packed. Twice. Not normal xD

  • I though dry sockets happen when there is poor blood circulation and the area is infected.. hurmm...

  • @TheAmirHazwan You would also think they would try to hide that bottle of Listerine when filming an informative youtube video- product that has been linked to drying and denaturing mucus membranes of the mouth; changing the pH level of the mouth and throat; and increasing risk of mouth and throat cancer. Subliminal product advertising or unintentional?

  • i guess she didn't rehearse before this video xD

  • oh michelle <3

  • this is so common yet i just cant find any propper pictures or videos of dry sockets anywhere... its really annoying, cause i had my wisdom teeth removed and would like to know whether everything is fine or not. hows it supposed to look and how does it look if theres a dry socket? would be cool if you could put up a video comparing how things SHOULD look after a tooth extraction and how it shouldnt...

  • thanks for the heads up

  • @IMDARKFIRE007 , I had all four wisdoms out and got dry socket..they told me the clove packing would come out in about 2 days...it lasted in there for about 2 weeks then fell out in clumps...byt that time i was all healed up so it worked great...By the time i had addressed the dry socket the bone was infected...i passed out from the pian when they were packing it, but immediatly after i felt great

  • @pfizerbob2000....yea 4 days later it came out in clumps. to my surprise and delight, i now have a socket with a full clot and my pain without the pack is minor. what little pain i have is from not only the extraction, but the week of constant inflamtion and throbbing. im pretty sure im healing now and FAST on my way to a 5 course meal lol. im SO sick of taking so long to eat!! ever see a kid with what looks like a huge sandwich in a small hand? thats how i feel.....takes FOREVER.

  • If you have to get your wisdom teeth removed, try to schedule it on a monday so you wont be stuck over a weekend without being able to see the dentist because youre in so much pain. Sometimes the dentist doesnt explain in detail how important it is to follow their instructions and not eat or do anything to bother the area for risk of getting a dry socket. Also take 2 of the antibiotics instead of just one each time. I would suggest not eating anything the first 24 hours after leaving dentist.

  • Im not sure if any other pain is as severe as dry socket pain. Pain medication doesnt really help.....not even narcotics. Narcotics might make you throw up and feel dizzy but the pain is still there. You just have to tough it out and let the body heal on its own which means minimal or no sleep for 2 or 3 nights. Constantly rinsing the area with ICE COLD water all day and night was the only thing that eased the pain for me until it healed. But yeah the searing pain makes you want to scream LOL.

  • @theloyalone100 Dude with all due respect..I disagree i got mine done lately and the day after everything was fine...no pain and it didn't swollen up...the blood clot was there...and i went to eat some junk food about an hour after seing the dentist......i took my medication the first 48 hours ..after that it was all good..no complications or anything like so....its good that you give peoples infos...but you don't have to go crazy like that....like no sleep or no food for 24 hours...my 2 cents!

  • getting mine taken out on friday. very anxious about it.

  • I had 3 wisdom teeth taken out weds. and today (mon.) i went to the doctor with extreme pain and they treated mee with a clove dressing in the socket. It hurt so much at first but about 2 hours later no pain at all, just some minor discomfort. Dry socket is terrible!!!!

  • I got a dry socket a long time ago on my lower wisdoms. Most painful experience ever. I think im getting another one with my top wisdoms now.

  • i got mine out a week ago exactly and i smoked last night i feel like one of the holes on my lower jaw is starting to hurt maybe im just paranoid but how do you know when dry socket starts to happen

  • @xcatreyux Pain, Weird taste and a bad smell .

  • i just got mine out 3 hours ago and My dentist told me Even if i dont smoke.. there is a chance you'll still get dry socket anyway i guess its diffrnet for everyone im gunna try to smoke a ciggerette threw my nose cause im goin insaneeeee i havent aten or smoked or anything all day my mouths still numb

  • I have one question, not that I think it's actually gonna be answered, but we'll see.

What I want to know is why do so many dentists tell patients what a dry socket is but they don't tell them how to fix it if they get caught on a weekend or if they're away from their local dentist to be able to get it treated?

I searched for DAYS online before I finally found out how to fix the pain I was having (which I explained how to fix in my Dry Socket video).

Thanks in advance if you're able to answer

  • I think that I am dealing with it now. I am in so much pain and my ear is killing me. My left side is still swollen and my dentist did not give me anything for the pain. I stop smoking just so this didn't happen and it did and now this really, really sucks.

  • i just had wisdom teeth out. i took the liberty of making cous cous last night. it got tuck in one of the big holes left behind, and i had no choice but to take the vacuum hose to it. im in alot if pain. i hope its not a dry socket!

  • i had a dry socket cause i can't stop smoking and i am telling you it sucks. if you get a tooth pullled stop smoking. you do not know what pain is

  • @viperset oh man im the same ive just had a wisdom tooth out and a tooth closer to it i havent smoked for 48 hrs and have been taking care of the area with salt warm water washes and everything the dentist told me i hope i dont get dry socket smoking is hard to quit especially when stressed :s

  • @MsTaintedButterfly So how did that go for you? I just got a tooth extracted yesterday morning. I am a smoker, have yet to have one since the night before my op. When should I start rinsing with warm salt water? and should I be extremely careful in doing so? Any advice would be great. After the pain I went through leading up to the removal, I just can't stop worrying about getting dry socket because it's apparently even more painful.

  • Hope I don't get one. Been doing good so far with eating, rinsing, icing, etc. Yesterday (when I got them out) I threw up after taking some Penecillin and having not eaten much and I bled after that. But everything else seems to be fine. Except for my left cheek has swelled up and looks freaky!

  • "or else you will get a dry socket"

Not . . . necessarily. I smoked immediately after getting a tooth out a few months back, and I didn't get one.

  • My dentist didn't give me any pain killers :(

  • I got all of my wisdom teeth pulled out last monday, and on sunday i figured out that i had a dry socket because it was so painful. You will know once you have it because your ears would be hurting and the pain would be on the side where it hurts the most too. Take care post op everyone because it hurts like crazy. But the treatment for it isnt so bad, the procedure is painful, but it will make everything better. =)

  • i just had my wisdom teeth out yesterday morning, and last night (4 hours ago) i could feel the blood clot slip out of the socket and i had to spit it out.

it doesn't hurt very much right now, but is it a dry socket anyway just because it has lost its clot?

  • ya my ear hurts on the side i have a dry socket too!! i feel like House for how much vicadin i'm popping to stop the pain

  • My brother and I had our wisdom teeth pulled yesterday. I'm very worried that I might have a dry socket. My brother says that his sockets have filled with the clot, but I don't think mine have. I rinsed out one of my sockets today because I had food stuck, and it feels like a clot has not been forming, and I'm really starting to panic, someone please help me out.

  • OMG!!! same! I got all 4 of mine out yesterday! but i've been eating yogurt the whole time and rinsing it with warm salt water though xD but I'm kind of nervous coz it didn't bleed that much after putting the gauze and i still don't feel any pain even if the numbness went away 30 minutes after the extraction...i can't wait till tomorrow...coz that will determine everything. From swelling to the scary dry sockets!! ahhah

  • You'll know when you have one because it'll be painful, and it's normal for small ammounts of bleeding to occur during the healing process, I had mine pulled 2 weeks ago, and theres still a small ammount of bleeding, but it's normal. Don't worry about it unless it's really bleeding and/or painful when your not doing anything.

  • I believe I might get one. Three days since extraction and back of mouth very dry and beginning to friggin feel weird and kinda hurt!

  • ok i got a tooth pulled 2 days ago its still sore, what does this meas and what colour is the wound suposto be

  • UP to two days is fine to be sore even normal. Bt between two and five if the pain becomes worse you need to see dentist. Yu will know if you have dry socket. I think I am getting ti and it SUCKS> Going to dentist tomoory!

  • mine were removed a week ago and now my upper left socket feels as if its full of air. its squishy kinda. I thought it was just swollen but it feels like a balloon and its really big. It doesn't hurt at all. its protruding out the outside side.

  • ok i got my teeth pulled about 5 days ago, and a blood clot already formed and went away, now today i smoked my first cigarette, and i also drank soda trough a straw, which i understand is also dangerous, does anybody know if ill be ok?

  • i am so nervous. i just had my wisdom teeth pulled and i have cotton balls in my mouth and i am hoping to not get this!

  • Just don't fiddle with the extraction points and you'll be fine. Don't rinse your mouth out with water, don't eat REALLY hot foods and don't touch them. Just keep the cotton balls in there until the bleeding stops.

  • I had my two upper wisdom tooth extracted on wed. and yesteday (Monday) I was told that I have dry socket. It sucks because I sing in a band and I have a recording sessions scheduled on Sat. The dentist had told me the extraction wouldn't be painful, not only was it painful, but now I have this. He said it was ok for me to sing. I can't trust him. Does anybody know if it's ok for me to sing, or that thing he put in my mouth in replacement of the blood clot is going to get dislodged...HELP!!!

  • So what your saying is that if u smoke your 100% gonna get a dry socket. I just got 2 lower teeth extracted about 16 hours ago and i smoked like 20mins b4 i seen this post lol am i ok as long as i can still see the clot on the hole?

  • you arens supposed to smoke because when you close your lips on that cigaretts you are sucking and when you suck your clot comes out- also smokers tend to heal much slower

  • well your pretty much just asking to be in pain by smoking after having an extraction. like the other person said, smoking does dislodge the blood clot opening the wound back up thus making it very suceptible to bacteria entering and thus causing an infection otherwise known as dry socket. if you do experience dry socket (unpleasent oder comming from your mouth, unpleasent taste, pain that does not go away) go back to your dr. immediately so he can pack it. good luck.

  • I've had several extractions and I smoke a lot. I smoked within 15 minutes of getting my teeth pulled everytime I've done it (4 times for all wisdom teeth). There's never been a problem. But I'm careful not to "suck" to hard on the cigarette-that will pull out the blood clot in the hole, which will cause dry socket. I've never seen anyone have this problem, but I guess it does happen for some. Use caution.

  • I got 1 tooth pulled last thursday and 2 on friday.... and now i have dry socket. went back 2 dentist 2day and got antibiotics and painkillers. I cant even talk with the pain... my advice, DONT get them all pulled the same week. My mouth is throbbing. Not Nice

  • I need 3 teeth pulled and this video isnt making me and more comforable with it lol, i mite just go to the dental hospital so there is no chance of me dieing

  • hey guys. I'm getting 2 of my wisdom teeth pulled on Saturday so I just have like a few questions (I'm just really nervous)

    > Im getting it under local anesthetic so I was wondering how much pain is there to expect (I TERRIFIED of needles)

    > Is post-extraction really as painful as people say it is

    > Does eating yogurt or swallowing your saliva or stuff like that increase the chances of having dry socket

    > and last, how much time does it take for it to heal? Months? Weeks?

    Thanks. =)

  • Hey, I just got mine pulled today.

When your under the anesthetic you really feel nothing. I took Valium before it and some kind of pill to relieve nausea. When i was conscious again I really don't remember much about getting up and leaving. It kind of seemed like a dream. My surgery started at 9:30 and by around 2 or 3 the bleeding stopped. I'm taking a Vicodin and so far the pain isn't really all the bad except when you eat, but stick to softer things like pudding and noodles. You'll be fine.

  • thanks for the info!! it really helped lessen my anxiety. thanks a lot. best of luck to you. =)

  • take what you normall take for pain killers and you wont experience to much post pain. post extraction differ's from person to person. depends on your pain tollerance. if you stick to the pain killers you should be fine. it actually helps to take the pain killers around 3 hours prior to the extraction so they are already in your system before the extraction happens. no eating yogurt does not increase your risk of having a dry socket.. and how would you get rid of your saliva? lol spit it?

  • if you spit it then for sure youd increase your chances of getting a dry socket. dry socket is caused by disloging the blood clot by using straws, spitting smoking, drinking alcohol for the first couple days.. you should be fine to use a straw after about 2-3 days.. so if you had it extr. today mon or tues should be ok to use a straw. and you will know if you have dry socket because it will be EXTREMELY painful, there will be a bad taste in your mouth and a very unpleasent odor as well.good luck

  • thanks a lot!! So far, I've done what you said and it didn't really hurt as much. thanks.

  • hurts sooooooooooooooooooo bad i have right now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Good video. I have a dry socket now. I dont smoke, didn't use a straw and still got it the third day after! It hurts SO bad! It is worse than the first day after extraction! The throbbing pain increased dramatically! It woke me out of a sleep at 530 am just throbbing. Went to the dentist and he said I have dry socket. The oil of cloves packed in helped a lot. it decreased the intensity of the pain so it's bearable. Try it !

  • DRY SOCKET IS EVIL! AND THAT DENTIST WHO POCKED AND PRODED IT IS THE DEVIL lol!

  • Had a wisdom growing horzontal in which they had to cut into bone to extract about 2 weeks ago. every time i drink something cold it would ache sooo bad and shot up into my head and i get a huge migrain! Post checkup shows dry socket and the dentist probed and pocked to make it bleed again....may as well took a slug to the head! owch lol Pray the blood clots and the hole heals shut....and don't spit!

  • You get a dry socket mostly from spitting or causing a vacuum in your mouth (straw etc) after an extraction. Also from smoking. It is not an infection, but a localized necrosis of the bone. It is treated with a eugenol paste placed into the socket. Antibiotics are not needed

  • It is definetly painful I had 2 of them for 4 days without knowing it...

If i was you I would go back to the doctors and get the holes packed, I did and its a mega relief. You can enjoy the things you really like to do without the pain getting in the way

  • I got my wisdom teeth removed about 6 days ago and have all the side affects of a dry socket. But its both sockets on the top jaw and it hurts really bad! My mom called the doctor and I'm going back there today at 1 to see if it is dry sockets, but the thing that scares me the most is that I cant open my mouth it hurts when I do. So what do I do? Will they put me out to fix it? Im really scared! Can you please help me?

  • they won't put you out. it should feel better they will put liquid and clean it. it should feel better that packing that she's talking about. they don't have to put you out its supposed to feel good. tell me what happens though! cause i got a dry socket too lol and i gotta wait til tomrrrow to go back

  • right when they cleaned the holes and packed it with some medicine it was so much better! The pain went away... now my holes are healed up but now I ate something hard and fractured my jaw... yippee. it'll heal but its definetly a relief!

  • Thanks for posting this.
