  • I was looking through white stripes covers today, and some were good. However, you are the only one who got the "feel" right, and the "feel" is the most important part. Thumbs up!

  • Good work :)

  • hey mate ive been a fan of your stripes vids for some time now. I just did my first cover of this song. check it out if u get a chance

  • I keep coming to your videos when i remember about them :)

    Ahhh still great!

  • What's the chord progression in 0:50 to 1:00

That part is the only part I don't know. I have a chord chart so if you can tell me the chord and its progression, please lemme know :D.

  • Those are basic chords listed in the video description: A-G-C-D-A (on that last A, I hit the base G note on the E string (3rd fret))

    :)

  • I shoulda said note progression. Are you going up one of the chords?

    Just wondering.

  • I have a Dead Leaves tutorial that covers the riff--just search my videos for "Dead leaves" and it should come up. :)

  • Plus I notice you have your thumb up for the major chords which is understandable.

Do you put the first knuckle of the thumb on the corner of the guitar?

It looks as if you're doing that.

Awesome positioning with the hands though. I wish I could play like you so bad lol.

I'm kinda bad with picking so far. I've been told not to have it parallel, i've been told that I should use the side of the picks more by Paul Gilbert, etc.

  • The grip I'm using here is called the baseball grip--it helps with some of the power here and to steady my hand--esp. when I do that partial muting part, where you can see I lift the chord hand slightly from the fretboard. As for picking, pick however is most natural.

  • I heard that using a pick on my classical guitar will give it too much "treble".

Only the top three strings are nylon.

Could I convert them to metal strings and simply completely play it like a Dreadnaut?

Its not like I hate Classical guitar, its just I don't have a teacher and finger picking is alien to a beginner like me lol.

  • You can play your classical just like a dread--picking, strumming, and all. I have a standard tuning version of "Death Letter" that I did on a classical--check it out, see what you think. :)

  • @AirHendrix91 probably not because if you use metal strings on a classical, the bridge won't be able to withstand the tension caused by the steel strings

  • Idk how to approach that. But after watching your vid, I'll definitely try to immitate via my guitar.

By watching the video as well, I noticed that you sorta tilt your left palm a bit, which I never even thought about doing. I always thought you had to have the palm straight with the guitar. I'll definitely try that tomorrow! Thanks for the video again.

I'll let you know if anything comes up ;D.

  • By the way, I wanted to know about the thumb placement. I notice you put your thumb behind the pointer finger (the first finger in my guitar book).

In the book, it says I should put it in the middle of the neck, behind the second finger)

It hurts like hell to even try that. Did I misread the book or is that seriously how proper positioning takes place?

  • Oh my god, I'm gonna learn this on my classical guitar. By the way, is it ok if I use a pick with my classical guitar?

  • Absolutely. If you go to my profile and search my vids for "Death Letter", you'll get three results--the standard tuning one uses a classical guitar with a pick. :)

  • Thanks dude.

I learned the song via your chords. Though, in my case, I do all the chords in the major scale (ex: A Major, G Major, C Major, D Major, C Major)

I got it though :D That was mighty fun. I just want a video though of how to hold the guitar. That's the only thing really holding me back because I can't find a single video on Youtube for Classical Guitar positioning using a plectrum.

  • You can hold a classical just like a dreadnaught if you want. If you want to hold it traditional classical style, then you can try YouTube users 'tedguitar' and 'Lutemann' who both have classical guitar instruction, including correct positioning of the guitar itself. Good luck! :)

  • Thanks, I'll check um out if I get free time today.

  • awesome man!!!

  • Thanks. I really like this early arrangement, and I often enjoy playing this version on acoustic instead of the album version.

  • underrated cover version.. beautiful..

  • awesome i love this version this is great! I have to go download Jack's version now.

  • Yes. Go get it before it gets taken down from that site. :)

  • Yay! I got it! It's awesome.

  • Thanks! Have you heard Chris Thile's version of this song on the mandolin...bluegrass.

  • It's been a while, but I couldn't remember the name--thanks.

  • Is there a tab available for your version?

  • Maybe. I haven't really looked. You can use a tab for the regular version, but just put the picking riff in different parts (and don't use any distortion). I've posted a tutorial on the picking parts if you're interested.

  • that was fucking awesome dude.

  • Hey if you could make an instructional video about how to play this that would be kick ass thanks!

  • Not very hard to figure out.

  • See my profile page for tutorial on the picking parts. :-)

  • Fantastic.

  • cool cover, i really like this earlier version and your guitar sounds great!
