I don't get this; what is really going on here? Like, what technique is this for? Accelerating quickly and decelerating quickly without using a lot of brake pedal, or is this supposed to be (correctly done) smooth shifting?
(Sorry to be a 'tard about this but I don't drive stick but I know I can do this. I drive a motorcycle so I'm familiar with the clutch. All I need to do is apply this to the car--thanks for being patient.)
@wagaiznogoud - if you brake before shifting, you will slow down the transmission RPM speed as well totally defeating the purpose of this technique which is to get RPM higher to match a lower gear. :)
@F2OOOGT Hey bro im sorry to tell you that pressing the clutch first before brakes is not the optimum way of heel toe. When you press the clutch first your rpm drops faster than breaking. And thats what i meant in the statement previous to this. I see that you want to break late, then just break late you dont need to press the clutch and wait longer to blip the throttle. just press the clutch and breaks simultaneously, but break a little before.
@F2OOOGT lol you sure you know why you need to heel toe? in a race situation, why would you downshift? thats right, you need to slow down. One of the principles in racing is that, you slow down FIRST, THEN downshift.
@F2OOOGT Also you know why you need to downshift? Thats right, you need to slow down! That means you need to slow the transmission down. Then use the brake first! The reason why you are blipping the throttle is to increase the "ENGINE" rpm to match up with transmission speed. You are not increasing the transmission speed in the process because you are slowing the car down. Gee not sure if it makes sense to you.
so lets say u get used to that.. and u heel and toe in a common situation ... and your foot gets stuck between the brake and gas pedal... what then? u die? or?
@KoexX93 - in that situation, I would step on the clutch with my foot that isn't stuck, put the car into neutral, and brake with my foot that isn't stuck bringing the car to a safe stop before trying to get my other foot unstuck.
my only critisisim is that your order is wrong. but im sure you know the correct order especially for cornering. because your letting off the brake way to early way before you get off the clutch. should be brake, clutch in, rev, clutch out, then off brake. brake is always the first and last.
@SprinterGTApex - lol it depends on the type of car though, in FWD cars, you have to trail-brake to get it to turn, in a Miata, the brakes aren't needed as much because the car turns like a giant go-kart. I shift before I brake because I match up the engine RPM's to the trans RPM in under 2 secs and back on the throttle, balancing the speed so that both outer tires are stable and maximized for grip. Also If I brake before I shift, I'll have to rev higher to sync RPM's, takes more time. =)
@F2OOOGT yea well yu are right, but it's all personal driver prefernce and style i suppose. braking first then shifting through the gears work best for me and it especially dont waste time bc thats somthing im always worried about lol. not bragging here, but i can brake first then single or double clutch heel toe in just under 2sec thats 5th to 2nd gear. double clutch is slightly longer by .5 sec. and love yur motto, i believe this too, if you dont know how to do this yur not a true driver.
@calderon2249 Then I suggest disabling the auto-rev function and practice this technique, you bought a sports car for a reason didnt you? OR just keep watching videos like this because in the end you let technology stop your further growth as a driver :)
@ToreDL87 - agreed, plus it's the last line in this movie for a reason. Until people learn how to do this and several other techniques, they are really just driving the car, not racing it. ;)
I do this in my 240 all day works real good, i found i difficult to do it with shoes on, i where vans so if that matters, but doing it without shoes on feels just right lol
@yadayada696 ROFL unfortunately due to spacial limitations, it's the only spot to capture this technique in a way that the viewer can clearly see how it's done. It makes it that much easier for others to learn the proper way to do it. :D
thank you for making this i just bought my first stick shift, a mazdaspeed3, ive been driving it for about 2 months now and wanted to start learning heal-to-toe shifting this helps a lot, i was thinking i had to turn my foot the other way haha
no prob, a good way to practice is to put the car in neutral and let it roll down a hill, just use your right foot toes to brake smoothly while your right heel taps the gas.
When you are comfy enough, try putting it into gear, just make sure its the right speed and RPM for that gear.
Nice video and well done. Is that a subaru? Just curious.
My only thought would be to add an outside shot of where you're actually driving to give a little bit more insight into watching your feet versus, the corners you're hitting. That would be a killer video.
@sneaky333333 i dont see racers press the clutch first. What u talking about?

@dustmiller65 it's to match the revs on a down shift

looks like you need pedal extenders to make the heel toe easier
