I humbly submit that these videos are not from the Guadalcanal campaigne. The USMC didn't have tracked amphibiius vehicles in 1942, nor did they have camouflage netting for their helmets. Also, most Marines landed carrying only the bolt action 1903 Springfield or the .45 Reising. These Marines seem to be far better equipped for the time. By 1943-44 this had all changed, of course. Perhaps this is another of numerous island conquests that took place after 1942
Why is there no film of us lads in Malaya, as a National Serviceman in that part of the world we seem to be ignored, as do my mates, dead and alive, Burma the forgotten army, WHAT ABOUT US.
@thecubanism I agree. it was the British in the Burma Theatre that held so many Japanese in place & away from the South Pacific islands. Our brave comrades from the British Isles are always being forgotten in this war.It is a pure shame. George McDonald Fraser has written a very good account of that particular bloody war titled "Quartered Safe Out Here" from Kipling's Gunga Din.
What I have never understood is why there is so little film of the allied landings given that there were so many cameramen on hand, all we see are the same old pictures of the invasion, incidentally, the greatest invasion in the history of the world but not very well covered, could it be that all these great cameramen bottled out?
This movie is not Guadalcanal. Uniforms and weapons are from a later campaign, maybe New Guinea. Note camo helmet covers, complete camo utilities, M-1 rifles and carbines. None of that was available on Guadalcanal in 1942. Sad they can't even get a documentary right.
"Belleau Wood" is how it's spelled dumbass. Every Marine knows that. You don't because you never were one you lying sack of phony shit. And no Ranger ever says he is, or was, in the "75th Ranger Reg". You never did that either, you loser.

I don't know what Marine Corps, or Army this Snako85 was in, as he claims, but it sure wasn't my Untied States Marine Corp. Research? We know our own history, and mission, quite well, and it never had anything to do with "Support" for anybody. What a douchebag, phony poser.

What about the Army? they were there. In fact the Army did most of the fighting. As i recall the Marines also never fought Germany. Not in Europe or Africa
@Snako85 Sorry, the Army did not do most of the fighting. In fact, the Army's 164th Reg. didn't get to Guadalcanal until mid October, more than 2 1/2 months after the landings. Once there the Army did well alongside the Marines. The Army did have it's own show attacking Mt Austen in Dec. but got whooped. They did not restart this offensive until Jan.
You are correct, no Marines fought in Europe or N. Africa.
@Toddinfantry You are mistaken the Army 25th Infantry was there 2 months afeter the Marine landings. The Marines ddnt get there mission done till 2 months after they were supposed too. The Army won its fights i dont know where you got that. Army did alot more fighting than the Marines by FAR. learn your history
@Snako85 Oh, but I know the history far better than you it seems. It was not the 25th Infantry, it was the 164th Regiment of the 23rd Infantry Division which arrived Oct 13.
The Marines had no timeframe to get the mission accomplished, hell they were barely supported the first two months on the island. And during this time they gave a lot better than they received, while the Japanese were pouring reinforcements onto the island. Technically the Army was brought in as garrison troops...
..to hold the perimeter against a large pending Japanese offensive. The night after the 164th(about 2,800 men)got on the island the Japanese landed 4500 men while the famous Kongo / Haruna bombardment of Henderson field.
Late October the 3rd of the 164th stood firm with Marine 1/7 and defeated the Japanese at the Lunga perimeter battle.
During the Nov offensive at the Matanikau six Marine battalions were used vs one Army.
The next Army units were not delivered to the Canal..
The 25th Infantry Div. was delivered to the Canal in Dec. when the 1st MarDiv was pulled out for recuperation. The rest of the 23rd was delivered in late Nov/early Dec as was the 8th Marine Regiment from the 2nd MarDiv.
The Dec 18 offensive by Army units at Mt. Austen was beaten and would not con't until Jan. 10 and still took until the 23rd to secure the area.
The Japanese started withdrawl on Feb 1 and were done by Feb. 7.

I hve done research on all theaters of WWII the Vietnam War and The Military in general through books, internet(reliable sources unlike Wikipedia, which any fraud can write.) @Snako85 I don't think you can show facts. I think you just like to get on YT and post on military sites like you know something...you don't.

@Snako85 "took two months to do what should have took a day"...now I know that you are a complete and utter idiot! Show me the facts for this! You haven't studied a damn thing..tell me when the 27th served on the canal.
Not only are you a poser, you can't read and you are no military historian.

Marines arent main in anything so they are SUPPORT. Marines arent elite, arent the best, arent the backbone, didnt bail the Army out ever they relived Army units sometimes but thats relieving not bailing while the Army Bails your asses out all the time. I was in the USMC 1998-2002 then Army 2002-2008. I did my research and iknow this as fact but you make shit up or read one guys story.
@Snako85 OK, where are you from. You have never served in the Corps and I highly doubt you were ever in the Army. Your history is just all screwed up.
This post is such foolishness that I will just let everyone else read it and they can see what an idiot you are. UNBELIEVABLE!!! You "snako" are not only a fool and a poser, you're also not very smart.
@Snako85 Playng "Call of Duty" on Nintendo Wi doesn't count you fraud.
He's a question, who were you with? Keep it simple, cause we understand it that way. It will only take a couple letters and numbers. Where were you stationed. Be specific about the name of the place, with appropriate abbreviation.
@Snako85 The Marines never fought in Europe? Guess they never mentioned Belleau Wood to you when you were supposedly in the USMC, you fucking liar.We all know the Army didn't want Marines in Europe again, because we embarressed them badly in WW I by saving Paris and stopping the German Offensive 20 miles from it.
The Marines didn;t have any combat formations in Europe because they had (eventually) 6+ Divisions in the Pacific, but had their own Aviation of all kinds. and were kinda busy.
There was more to the fighting in the Southern Solomon Islands than just Guadalcanal (The Canal to those that fought there). My Father fought on the Canal, Rendova and Munda Islands against the Japanese. He never spoke of it, till I became a US Marine years later... and the Tradition continued through me to my Son. Between the 3 of us we have fought in 3 wars, 2 skirmishes and lived to tell the tales.
"They would have to overcome the Japanese and the temperatures"... AND the GIANTS. There are MANY tribes of GIANTS living in Solomon Islands and also PNG and Vanuatu. Big news for the outside World, but nothing out of the ordinary for the locals. My mate drove the Skases Hovercraft for them and grew up in PNG, there are also little people, Mothman-type entities, and UFO's en masse. War is an indication of how brainwashed and clueless most people are.
My grandpa fought here he was WIA and lost for three days in the jungle and he never talked bout it but one thing he did tell me was that right after being shot he hid inside the giant bush and he said for two to three hours after that there were Japanese just walking right by that bush he actually survived believe it or not he ended up having malaria by the time they found him alive
these are Great thanks much for posting. Are we allowed to post this copyrighted stuff? Maybe you shot this yourself? Dont get me wrong I am all for it, just curious since it looks like the time life series. I am buying it anyway for my old man since he digs this a lot. Thank you for posting this so we can see more of what its like.
My father just just turned 90 he served in the Navy during the battle for the canal he was a Higgins boat operator that dropped off the marines on the beach, later he stayed there to secure the island.
My father and three of my uncles fought on Guadalcanal (Americal Devision, 164th infantry, Company K). All came home alive, one with a purple heart. Going to Guadalcanal is one of the things on my bucket list. The men and women from that generation truly saved our country with their blood and their lives. God bless them all.
My great-uncle died in Guadalcanal, he was a Marine. No one ever found his body. I wish I could have known him. His brother, my grandfather, never forgave the Japanese for it. My grandfather went to Hiroshima (I think, maybe Nagasaki) after the A-bombs were dropped. He said that he didn't feel sorry for a single one of the Japanese. He wasn't a bad guy, he just lost someone closest to him.
Before my grandmother died, I asked her about her brother who had been on "the Canal" during the war. His name was Mike. He only lived a few months after he got home. Died of like jungle rot and fever and I think a malaria type of thing. She said he used to wake up at night screaming - "here they come! kill 'em! kill the japs! kill the sons of bitches!" That is war and it wasn't his fault. I'm a veteran myself and I would have given anything to have met him.
Thats what i was thinking. They were not issued camo uniforms til 43. At canal they had plain dungrees and no helmet covers. this is more likley a training excersise or Bouganville.
Early in World War II the Marines used the camouflage pattern one piece jungle suit developed for the Army, in the field since 1942. In 1944 a further redesign of the two piece camouflage uniform was adopted.
Yes, but the that one piece suit was not very common. Most Marines wore Fatigues, and many wore Army HBTS early on. The older Summer service was also worn. But this footage shows way too much camo + camo helmet covers to be Guadalcanal. + Most the rilfe seen in this video carried by the Marines are M1s.... at Guadalcanal only Army Units had M1s on a large scale. 90% of Marines most likley carried M1903s.
I spent 75 days in the Solomons in 1986 as part of a 6 man Marine Corps communications team. The islands were devastated by Cyclone Namu and we set up a communications network to asses damages. We also trained locals to operate radios. I stood on Red Beach and thought about my brothers who fought and died on Guadalcanal Canal.
Bellcartoons: Try the US Naval Academy Nimitz Library. Good luck, and my best regards to your pop. My Dad was there too with the 50th Bomb Squadron, 11th BG with B-17's.
Does anyone know how I can find footage of the Alhena taken at Guadal Canal (esp. footage of the black sailors)? My grandfather served on the Alhena when it was torpedoed. Black sailors didn't generally man any of the guns, I'm told, but during or after the commotion of the torpedo strike, as Japanese planes targeted them, he did. He's 90 now. I want to find some footage, at least of the ship, to splice into a home movie about his life. I'm hoping to give it to him for his 91st birthday.
Grear footage, just a pity it isnt Guadalcanal,as you can see camo helmet covers and M1 carbines that came in 1943.Vandergriff is in the footage, so its probably Bougainville. I have a copy of come colour and black and white Canal footage taken by a member of the 164th Infantry in Nov 42.
My father has always said the War was a life changing experience, he met long time friends, and still has a very good friend that was there in the canal with him. He also remember the sad things having a best friend go up the Line and get killed, also seeing the Japanese getting buried in ONE grave, but in all he would do it again and serve his Country.
My father was in Guadalcanal, he was a Higgins boat landing craft operator, and was there until the island was secured, came back in 1945 to the West coast, but the War ended and didn't have to return for the invasion of Japan. He is 88 and still remembers stories of his time there.
This was a critical battle it kept allied supply lines open and stopped a massive Japanse offensive into the Indian Ocean. US first to stop Japanese offensive at Midway, Austraila won allies first land battle vs Japanese at Milne Bay, and US won the allies first successfull offensive at Guadalcanal.
Guadacanal's greatest importance was its proximity to Australia. German subs and commerce raiders were roaming relatively unchecked in the Indian Ocean during that time.
Seems unlikely that all or even any of this really comes from August, 1942. For example, I don't believe the Marines had yet to use camouflage helmet covers or uniforms, nor land in amtracs rather than Higgins boats....
Just a foot note, Australians were fighting in Papua at the same time and were the first forces to defeat the Japs on land. they also played a key roll in the North African campain. Thanks to the USA for helping us defeat the Japanese.Australia only had a population of 6000 000 at the time.
Yea, the Aussie's were in it from the start, you guy's were great against Rommel in Africa, did great job holding the jap's back too! My Dad was at Guadalcanal, U.S.M.C..... Love you Aussie's, alway's!
@acoyrazorback Yes on the Kokoda trail the Aussies won a courageous and difficult battle under very difficult conditions. In New Guinea the climate and terrain were also very difficult. I have a friend visit New Guinea and he said the place is essentially a sauna bath.
@acoyrazorback The British and Kiwis and other parts of the British Commonwealth were fighting the Japs for 3 years before the Americans entered the war.
@acoyrazorback , i lam a American and i never forget about those who fought along side of the US then. My wife is from Malaysia Borneo, at the time her mom and dad lived outside a town called Jesselton. Now it is Kota Kinabalu. So her mom remembers the bombs dropping and so forth but was very young then. MY dad barley missed going in battle as he ended up in Seoul , South Korea in Sept 1945. He would have been in the invasion of Japan.
@acoyrazorback You're welcome! My grandfather was in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945. He served on a destroyer. They were involved in many Pacfic naval battles, such as the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal (November 12-13, 1942), Battle of Kolombangara, Battle of Kula Gulf, Battle of Vella Lavella, Battle of the Philippine Sea, Battle of Leyte Gulf, bombardments of Munda and Vila-Stanmore, and other battles. They also had shore leave in Australia a couple times.
@acoyrazorback Not quite. Not quite. Despite numerical superiority the Australians found themselves being forced back till the Japanese were within some 50km of Port Moresby. It was the Battle for Guadalcanal that changed matters. In order to defeat the Americans on Guadalcanal the Japanese could not continue support for the ongoing offensive on the Kokoda Track. Just a footnote. The Japanese remained in Papua until the war.
@acoyrazorback After the Japanese invasion on 8 December 1941 of Hong Kong,The Royal Rifles of Canada and The Winnipeg Grenadiers were there. They lost, but I think Canadians, were the first allied nation to see land battles with Japan, I could be wrong, I'm not a Canadian, but I can pick up a book.
great movie, bad comments. i mean do you really think that? the cause of the war was that hitler was nuts. im not english but i think it probably wouldnt hurt for you to research your own theories a little bit more before propagandising nazi behaviour as just.

This post is such foolishness that I will just let everyone else read it and they can see what an idiot you are. UNBELIEVABLE!!! You "snako" are not only a fool and a poser, you're also not very smart.
Toddinfantry 1 year ago
@Snako85 Playng "Call of Duty" on Nintendo Wi doesn't count you fraud.
He's a question, who were you with? Keep it simple, cause we understand it that way. It will only take a couple letters and numbers. Where were you stationed. Be specific about the name of the place, with appropriate abbreviation.
StefanKelley111 1 year ago
@Snako85 The Marines never fought in Europe? Guess they never mentioned Belleau Wood to you when you were supposedly in the USMC, you fucking liar.We all know the Army didn't want Marines in Europe again, because we embarressed them badly in WW I by saving Paris and stopping the German Offensive 20 miles from it.
The Marines didn;t have any combat formations in Europe because they had (eventually) 6+ Divisions in the Pacific, but had their own Aviation of all kinds. and were kinda busy.

@StefanKelley111 Belleau woods was WWI dumbass

There was more to the fighting in the Southern Solomon Islands than just Guadalcanal (The Canal to those that fought there). My Father fought on the Canal, Rendova and Munda Islands against the Japanese. He never spoke of it, till I became a US Marine years later... and the Tradition continued through me to my Son. Between the 3 of us we have fought in 3 wars, 2 skirmishes and lived to tell the tales.
Semper Fi, Mac. I got mine, how you making out?

How can this be Guadalcanal, those marines were wearing camo uniforms...those weren't out until '43...
Rammstein4ever 2 years ago
Thats what i was thinking. They were not issued camo uniforms til 43. At canal they had plain dungrees and no helmet covers. this is more likley a training excersise or Bouganville.
ginjaninja1988 1 year ago
Early in World War II the Marines used the camouflage pattern one piece jungle suit developed for the Army, in the field since 1942. In 1944 a further redesign of the two piece camouflage uniform was adopted.
swiftandeadly 1 year ago
Yes, but the that one piece suit was not very common. Most Marines wore Fatigues, and many wore Army HBTS early on. The older Summer service was also worn. But this footage shows way too much camo + camo helmet covers to be Guadalcanal. + Most the rilfe seen in this video carried by the Marines are M1s.... at Guadalcanal only Army Units had M1s on a large scale. 90% of Marines most likley carried M1903s.
ginjaninja1988 1 year ago
@ginjaninja1988 I agree. Too much camo. Must be from a later island hop.

I'm hoping to give it to him for his 91st birthday.
bellcartoons 2 years ago
Grear footage, just a pity it isnt Guadalcanal,as you can see camo helmet covers and M1 carbines that came in 1943.Vandergriff is in the footage, so its probably Bougainville. I have a copy of come colour and black and white Canal footage taken by a member of the 164th Infantry in Nov 42.

My father has always said the War was a life changing experience, he met long time friends, and still has a very good friend that was there in the canal with him. He also remember the sad things having a best friend go up the Line and get killed, also seeing the Japanese getting buried in ONE grave, but in all he would do it again and serve his Country.
joevet66 3 years ago
My father was in Guadalcanal, he was a Higgins boat landing craft operator, and was there until the island was secured, came back in 1945 to the West coast, but the War ended and didn't have to return for the invasion of Japan. He is 88 and still remembers stories of his time there.

This was a critical battle it kept allied supply lines open and stopped a massive Japanse offensive into the Indian Ocean. US first to stop Japanese offensive at Midway, Austraila won allies first land battle vs Japanese at Milne Bay, and US won the allies first successfull offensive at Guadalcanal.
Victory1981 3 years ago
Guadacanal's greatest importance was its proximity to Australia. German subs and commerce raiders were roaming relatively unchecked in the Indian Ocean during that time.
Elchupucabra 3 years ago
Seems unlikely that all or even any of this really comes from August, 1942. For example, I don't believe the Marines had yet to use camouflage helmet covers or uniforms, nor land in amtracs rather than Higgins boats....

dkshotwell 3 years ago
Just a foot note, Australians were fighting in Papua at the same time and were the first forces to defeat the Japs on land. they also played a key roll in the North African campain. Thanks to the USA for helping us defeat the Japanese.Australia only had a population of 6000 000 at the time.
acoyrazorback 4 years ago 21
Yea, the Aussie's were in it from the start, you guy's were great against Rommel in Africa, did great job holding the jap's back too! My Dad was at Guadalcanal, U.S.M.C..... Love you Aussie's, alway's!

zinnington 4 years ago 6
@acoyrazorback Yes on the Kokoda trail the Aussies won a courageous and difficult battle under very difficult conditions. In New Guinea the climate and terrain were also very difficult. I have a friend visit New Guinea and he said the place is essentially a sauna bath.
juscurious 1 year ago
@acoyrazorback The British and Kiwis and other parts of the British Commonwealth were fighting the Japs for 3 years before the Americans entered the war.
tomsmith100 1 year ago
@acoyrazorback , i lam a American and i never forget about those who fought along side of the US then. My wife is from Malaysia Borneo, at the time her mom and dad lived outside a town called Jesselton. Now it is Kota Kinabalu. So her mom remembers the bombs dropping and so forth but was very young then. MY dad barley missed going in battle as he ended up in Seoul , South Korea in Sept 1945. He would have been in the invasion of Japan.
buzzobug 1 year ago
@acoyrazorback You're welcome! My grandfather was in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945. He served on a destroyer. They were involved in many Pacfic naval battles, such as the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal (November 12-13, 1942), Battle of Kolombangara, Battle of Kula Gulf, Battle of Vella Lavella, Battle of the Philippine Sea, Battle of Leyte Gulf, bombardments of Munda and Vila-Stanmore, and other battles. They also had shore leave in Australia a couple times.
rhall4th 1 year ago
@acoyrazorback Not quite. Not quite. Despite numerical superiority the Australians found themselves being forced back till the Japanese were within some 50km of Port Moresby. It was the Battle for Guadalcanal that changed matters. In order to defeat the Americans on Guadalcanal the Japanese could not continue support for the ongoing offensive on the Kokoda Track. Just a footnote. The Japanese remained in Papua until the war.
Apteryxrules 9 months ago
@Apteryxrules Hmm best you do some more reading may I suggest Kokoda Peter Fitzsimmons is a good start.
acoyrazorback 8 months ago
@acoyrazorback After the Japanese invasion on 8 December 1941 of Hong Kong,The Royal Rifles of Canada and The Winnipeg Grenadiers were there. They lost, but I think Canadians, were the first allied nation to see land battles with Japan, I could be wrong, I'm not a Canadian, but I can pick up a book.
