  • R.I.P. Phil Hartman.

  • this made me laugh so much

  • I miss Dan Rather. The current crop of bought-and-sold "journalists" make Dan look like Walter Cronkite.

  • hahaha i literally just 'aw he's so cute' out loud. he obviously has a great sense of humor to get up there and do that. and damn he looks so young!

amazing song btw. one of my favorites of the 90s

  • Letterman loves REM? Paul does too? I do as well? REM must be onto something

  • "And Diane Lane from Judge Dredd..."

  • He was actually attacked by one man who was identified 11 years later as an individual that believed the news media was beaming signals into his head and if he could determine the frequency, he could block the signals.

  • You guys ARE aware of what this song is really about, right? How Dan Rather had the shit beat out of him by a couple of guys who thought he was someone else? That "What's the frequency, Kenneth?" was the question they asked him before they started assaulting him? (I'm addressing these questions to halcyon 083 and ILoveMikeyStipey; sounds as thought they might have been unaware.)

  • after seeing rather on stage , i understand why the guy fucked him up

  • Rather being there for his own song is the greatest moment ever lol

  • lol, dan rather singing a tribute made for him

  • que miedoooo ahahahah

amé los pantalones de Buck (L)

  • it looks like peter buck is wearing pijama bottems

  • wow, dont you just love R.E.M., i mean they have mastered every side of song writing because thei songs sounds brilliant and having interesting meaning aswell. i mean bob dylan had the meaning bit but his songs did'nt sound brilliant, i mean he cant even sing - yet he's great whereas R.E.M. are even better because they have the great sound aswell. They seriously are a great band.

  • yeh, i knew that - but i thought stipe had chosen to write about sex on this albulm so it confuses me with this song. Not that i dont love it i mean its my favorite song. :L

  • And had almost everything happen to him in his life!

  • 'Ol Dan bustin' some moves!

  • haha this is so great

  • i love this riff

  • my name is kenneth!!

    LOL!!

    Kenneth James Altec III

  • i red somewhere that when he was getting mugged dan rather thought that they were saying to him "whats the frequency keneth" so thats were the song came from

  • It's not that that is what he THOUGHT the guy was saying, it actually WAS what the guy was saying. The guy was a nutjob.

  • I think the song came out before Rather got mugged. Rather was being asked Whats the frequency Kenneth and Dan kept on saying my name isnt Kenneth. I saw that on a show years ago. Great song though.....

  • both rather and ken are the same person so i cannot make sense of what you are saying

  • Nope, it was 1986 when he got mugged. and the song came out in 1994.

  • @BOSTONBOYINIRELAND The Rather mugging incident happened in 1986. The song was released in 1994.

  • what year is this show from?

  • 1995

  • God... I love REM... this makes me love them more.

  • OMG classic!

  • OMG what a train wreck

  • Dan Rather writes fiction a lot better than he sings

  • Father Rather sends out a signal to his masters.

  • this was so awesome

  • Dan is so soo cool. What's the frequency, Daniel??

  • Because the guy was mentally ill, I guess.

  • what year was this?

  • LOOK AT SCHAFFER!!! LOL!!!

  • Schaffer is thin!

  • Dan Rather, what a legend! He needs to sing a wee bit louder, though, but still. Hehe.

  • Well, at least he's a good sport over the whole thing!

  • Jesus this is awful!!

  • Oh my lovin' Lord!!!!

  • One night in October 1986, Dan Rather was walking down a Manhattan street when he was punched from behind and thrown to the ground. His assailant kicked and beat him while repeating, "Kenneth, what is the frequency?"

  • In 1997, based on a tip from a psychiatrist, Rather's attacker was identified as William Tager. According to the psychiatrist, Tager, who was currently serving time for killing an NBC stagehand, blamed news media for beaming signals into his head, and thought if he could just find out the correct frequency, he could block those signals that were constantly assailing him. Hence the enigmatic inquiry.

  • Maybe that's the cause of my headaches too! (ha-ha)

  • why did he call him kenneth?

  • what year is this?

  • It was 1995, the Monster Tour. I saw them in Milwaukee,WI on that tour, but Rather was not there!

  • 'he has not been the same since Connie left'

    ???

    What is Letterman TALKING ABOUT?

  • Connie Chung was co anchor with Dan Rather for a while on the CBS evening news.

  • Thanks mate

  • Dan started singing that all William Shatner-esque, talking out the lyrics....

  • dna rather looks like Bill!

  • He was trying? (laugh)cute, I think.

  • Bizarre and disturbing.

  • Just watched R.E.M. on RockVideo.TV__

    Must See!

  • sdfhsdghgjskjh

    freakishly weird

  • You can find out more about Dan Rather and "What's the frequency, Kenneth" on Wikipedia...

  • thanks for that...didn't know...i gathered from the lyrics it's about a crazy person, but didn't know exactly who

  • At least all those years later Dan Rather has a sense of humor about it.

  • Dan Rather?

  • The former CBS news anchor. The title to the song "What's The Frequency Kenneth" is a reference to an infamous incident in New York where Rather was attacked on the street and the assailant repeatedly yelled out "What's The Frequency, Kenneth?" in between kicking him.
