Who cares what kind of whistle that is it's not like Antibes going to go out and buy one. It sounds fantastic. Amazing video. At 120 it looks like and sounds like an alco is coming at the camera not a heisler fantastic.
You are 100% right!! That's why so many roads copied the Nathan-6 to make their own, such as the SP. The Nathan 6-chime is definitely the king of all locomotive whistles!!
@NathanH5 thanks fred, i got some nathan 6er's recorded on my phone as my ringtone's. the best one i have was the grand trunk 6 chime step top used on Ohio Central 6325 during her first years of excursion service on the Ohio Central.
It's the original 6 chime that came with the Heisler when it came from the MRL back in 1967....video from the 50's has audio of this very whistle. Now, what IS it? I have no clue.
Great footage. It's funny how people will argu about what type of whistle it is, kinda reminds me of 5 old geezers in a coffee shop arguing about what size bolt was used on the left engine mount of a 54 ford that was rebuilt 5 times before dying an ungodly death at a lake bottom.
You sure? We have one at work and it sounds just like this whistle and it is a bona fide SP 6-chime. I've heard Nathan 6-chimes before in person i.e the ones on NKP 765 and PM 1225 and they sound nothing like this.
They used this same whistle on the big-6 Shay the year I was there for the whistle blow. It is a marked Nathan long-bell 6-chime. Those two on the 765 and 1225 have shrouds which cause them to whippoorwill and blow totally different sounds. I have two of these big Nathans and can vouch for their sound.
I hate when they pour on the smoke for run-bys... It gives a false impression, making steam locomotives appear to pollute more than they actually do. A competent fireman would be embarrassed by this. Disgusting! Cool engine though...
Hey fellas, hate to burst your bubble here but that whistle is neither from the Santa Fe nor the Southern Pacific -- it is actually a Southern 6-chime.
These old steam whistles used to be a common sound all over America. From locomotives and river boats, factories, steam shovels and tug boats. Now it's part of our long-lost past glory where we weren't held hostage to big oil and environmental fascists. I guarantee there are New World Order freaks who want every machine that makes any kind of smoke melted down for scrap. We got to fight 'em tooth and nail to preserve our country before they steal everything!
@2speakfreely Even the steam locomotives of yesterday, for every ton moved, they still produce less pollution than your average tractor trailer. It is much more efficient to move freight by rail than by truck. If only our railroads were a little more reliable; thank you deregulation!
@guitboxchicken deregulation actualy saved the railroads. The ICC, once created to prevent unfair pricing by railroad tycoons, actualy helped to kill thousands of railroads in the United States.
They should trade whistles with the 4449, that way she can once again sing to a SP whistle. Hers walked away while she sat in oaks bottom park and has never been recovered. :(
Love a southern 6 chime so is the PRR 3 chime another great whistle.
