  • I absolutelly love the way he covers the high notes, with such ellegance!

  • Ettore Bastianini... la voce di bronzo e di velluto...

  • BEST BARITONE AFTER THE II WORLD WAR!!!

  • @IRA77GEOTENORE

AND ALSO BEFORE THE II WORLD WAR!!!

  • He was extraordinary. The combination of beauty and power he possessed vocally. I was impressed by Warren and Milnes but Bastianini is incredible what a loss.Thank god his videos and recordings exist.

  • The velvet voice of Ettore still thrills! Bravo!

  • I saw Corelli sing Romeo in Gounod’s opera. Sat way back in the Family Circle. Unless you were there, it’s difficult to appreciate Corelli’s amazing physical stage presence. Could hear him easily in the next to last row.

That makes Corelli a rare combination of athleticism and art. Like a ballet dancer.

High paid athletes are a sham by comparison. Many can barely memorize their phone numbers, and wouldn't make it to the second scene if they had to learn Romeo's lines.

  • Superhuman!!! The son of Verdi...

  • Wondrous singing.

  • He OWNS this aria, exiting as any singer i've ever heard

  • His fabulous voice and presence make all the statement that is needed

  • It can't be sung better. Never.

  • +10 !!!! IMMORTALE !!!!!!

  • i don't think one has to run around the stage to be a great actor. I find this performance wonderful. The acting is all over the voice. This isn't a happy aria, the character is rather diabolical actually. I say BRAVO Ettore, a beautiful performace!

  • I think it was sung gorgeously--had I seen it live, I would have been thrilled. But there's a big area between "plant your legs and sing" and "running around the stage." I've watched a lot of the Bastianini videos here, and I have to say he was a bit stodgy in the dramatic roles. BUT his recital performance of the Largo al factotum shows he could really do some good comedic acting, so I suppose it depended on the material.

  • Boris.. Less is more in this occassion:) I believe, at Carlo di Vargas is thinking here (il mal pensiero) and aria is much better and effective if singer doesnt try to make some extra effort by "acting" too much. Ofcourse you must sing it out, and most Baritones have enough work in that challenge.....Some people in audience think at that is real emotional acting:) My point is that at, Ettore is just great here.

  • A fantastic baritone at the peak of his performing ability. A fine, clear, declamatory rendition of this aria. A true inspiration to all baritones.

  • A true legend!

  • What a singer!!! Destiny was so cruel with him... What a horrible death for such an artist.

  • what a singer, the only singer who can fallow him was cappuccilli ..... why these wonderful singer all dead ....

  • I've never heard better one than this. He is my hero as a singer.

  • Thanks Onegin for this fantastic video!

  • La migliore interpretazione di quest'aria l'ha data certamente Bastianini! Mai nessun baritono potrà eguagliarlo, Ettore the best!

  • You are truly an idiot!

  • This is a reply to Sandrup

  • La miglior Forza del destino. Napoli, Teatro S.Carlo, 1958. Ettore Bastianini, Franco Corelli, Renata Tebaldi e Boris Christoff.

  • Absolutely the best of the best! I am in awe in the face of such magnificence.

  • Grazie Ettore for all the gioia you gave me

    with your voice and friendship.

    Ci manccherai sempre

  • I'm so grateful that IRA recorded this performance.

I don't think there ever will be another of this calibur like Bastianini.

  • It doesn't get any better than this!

  • Benedetta siete, mio signore Ettore. I vi amo.

  • Listening to Bastianini filled me with both awe and sadness. Awe that once he bestrode the operatic globe with his colossal voice (its beauty too not just the size). Sadness in that today we have to settle for Hampson and the like. Try to catch him too in a live Trovatore with Corelli from Vienna where as a bonus this same scene with cabaletta is reprised but even more freely and excitingly.

    Dr. DiLuzio

  • The voice of velvet and brass - "voce di velutto i bronze" - when he fell ill with throat cancer he did not let anyone to know about it - and was booed when his voice cracked on a performance. Quite wierd! Without any doubt, the baritone of the 20th century!

  • Today we call these singers fake bass-baritones and only with Bastianini's technique that one can reach the stratospheric tessitura with such a massive sound. One greatest advice my teacher ever told me is that everyone should be singing like a tenor hahah. It is quite true sometimes.

  • Worthy of all the praise afforded him! Bravo!

  • Bravo Bastianini - incredible voice - a legend of opera.

  • One of the greatest voices ever in one of the most splendid operas!

  • My goodness," morir tremenda cosa." He died 7 years later. We miss you, no bariton has your rich warm colour.

  • WOW WOW WOW WOW!!!

  • Meraviglioso! What a rich, dark voice he had.If I'm not mistaken,he began his career as a basso in the late 1940's and made the transition to baritone after several years. We are indeed fortunate he made that change.Mille grazie for posting this. My favorite Italian baritone.

  • As always; just superb! THE baritone of the century.

  • Oh my goodness, you are so right. I felt that scene, he was awesome! He can really sing!
