He was extraordinary. The combination of beauty and power he possessed vocally. I was impressed by Warren and Milnes but Bastianini is incredible what a loss.Thank god his videos and recordings exist.
I saw Corelli sing Romeo in Gounod’s opera. Sat way back in the Family Circle. Unless you were there, it’s difficult to appreciate Corelli’s amazing physical stage presence. Could hear him easily in the next to last row.
That makes Corelli a rare combination of athleticism and art. Like a ballet dancer.
High paid athletes are a sham by comparison. Many can barely memorize their phone numbers, and wouldn't make it to the second scene if they had to learn Romeo's lines.
Much as I admire EB (wonderful voice, incredible technique) "Urna fatale" did not quite meet my expectations. Maybe no baritone can. Verdi's writing is incredibly challenging. I've always imagined the ideal performance of this: elastic expressive elegant as well as emotional. Firmly believe the fast ornamental notes can be very expressive and are an essential part of the melodic line. Here they are slightly undersung and too fast. "Linger over the beauties", as Clara Schumann said.

I have an audio recording of this aria with EB singing and always thought it was perfect. But seeing him live... I have to say, he wasn't much of an actor. He was obviously of the "plant your legs and just sing it" school of operatic acting. :)
i don't think one has to run around the stage to be a great actor. I find this performance wonderful. The acting is all over the voice. This isn't a happy aria, the character is rather diabolical actually. I say BRAVO Ettore, a beautiful performace!
I think it was sung gorgeously--had I seen it live, I would have been thrilled. But there's a big area between "plant your legs and sing" and "running around the stage." I've watched a lot of the Bastianini videos here, and I have to say he was a bit stodgy in the dramatic roles. BUT his recital performance of the Largo al factotum shows he could really do some good comedic acting, so I suppose it depended on the material.
Boris.. Less is more in this occassion:) I believe, at Carlo di Vargas is thinking here (il mal pensiero) and aria is much better and effective if singer doesnt try to make some extra effort by "acting" too much. Ofcourse you must sing it out, and most Baritones have enough work in that challenge.....Some people in audience think at that is real emotional acting:) My point is that at, Ettore is just great here.
La miglior Forza del destino. Napoli, Teatro S.Carlo, 1958. Ettore Bastianini, Franco Corelli, Renata Tebaldi e Boris Christoff.
Listening to Bastianini filled me with both awe and sadness. Awe that once he bestrode the operatic globe with his colossal voice (its beauty too not just the size). Sadness in that today we have to settle for Hampson and the like. Try to catch him too in a live Trovatore with Corelli from Vienna where as a bonus this same scene with cabaletta is reprised but even more freely and excitingly.
The voice of velvet and brass - "voce di velutto i bronze" - when he fell ill with throat cancer he did not let anyone to know about it - and was booed when his voice cracked on a performance. Quite wierd! Without any doubt, the baritone of the 20th century!
Today we call these singers fake bass-baritones and only with Bastianini's technique that one can reach the stratospheric tessitura with such a massive sound. One greatest advice my teacher ever told me is that everyone should be singing like a tenor hahah. It is quite true sometimes.
Meraviglioso! What a rich, dark voice he had.If I'm not mistaken,he began his career as a basso in the late 1940's and made the transition to baritone after several years. We are indeed fortunate he made that change.Mille grazie for posting this. My favorite Italian baritone.
I absolutelly love the way he covers the high notes, with such ellegance!

A fantastic baritone at the peak of his performing ability. A fine, clear, declamatory rendition of this aria. A true inspiration to all baritones.
