Thank you so much for this video. My family and I are heading to Montreal for vacation this week and learning about tourism and BIXI in Montreal was so helpful!
Hey people, has anybody heard that the BIXI system might actually be causing more carbon pollution than it is preventing due to the maintenance and displacement crews that run around the city in trucks?
Reminding you, as mentionned in previous comments, that Bixi is 5$ + hourly fees.
Before the launch, I was clearly told by Stationnement de Montreal that it was 5$ no extra charge, an information that was than re-verified and re-confirmed, only to be told later that there had been a mistake. Sorry about the confusion.
SO. Let's re-set the record straight since I'm still getting questions about it. 5$ is your basic charge. It gives you 30 minutes.
After 30 minutes, you will be charged for the extra time. Bixis are great to go from A to B. I use it for short runs, i.e. going to the park, getting me to Jazz Festival, going to Old Montreal. It doesn't take me more than 30 minutes, and I lock it back.
When I return, I simply take another one, return it in less than 30 minutes, that way you only get charged your 5$ It all depends what use you make of it.
On another hand, they are a great opportunity to include exercise in your daily grind!
The system is being exported to cities across the globe.
It would be great to see our community come together and be proud of a green initiative made in Quebec that is setting an example of green living and innovation around the world.
Bixi is an amazing initiative ! Considering the Montreal weather, it is even more impressive. But you sound like Montreal invented it. The "Bixi" system has been going for years in cities like Lyon and Paris in France, way before it got exported to North America. Good job on the initiative, but you sound like you are taking credit for something you did not invent ...
Yes she was taking credit for the elements that were pioneered by OUR system: payment method, solar panel-charging, mobile docking stations, the bike design (heavy, indestructible) are the key things that made the system succesful. In Lyon and Paris bikes are regularly broken, stolen and vandalized, and they are privately funded. Our bikes have no advertising scheme behind them, and don't wind up in Senegal.
The Chinese invented noodles, but the Italians created pasta. Capish?
The service is a big success. However, it is not meant as a mode of transportation to keep with you but as a way of getting rapidly from point A to B (as with a taxi : BI =bicycle ; XI = taxi). Take the example of a ride on Canal Lachine : there are no BiXi stations yet on the west side of Montréal and to get to the other end of the canal (some 14km west of the Old Montréal), enjoy the scenery and come back to a section of town where BiXi is available, that would cost you more than $5.00 !!
Nice video and the project is really nice. The only bad thing about it (to me) is the price. A tourist will most likely use public transportation since it's so much cheaper and can bring you to so many more places faster and safer. It would be great to eventually see a price drop even if those bikes are everywhere at the moment.
Slight correction to be made! I was initially informed that Bixi would only cost 5$ a day, however there are also some hourly fees. So 5$ plus amount of time you use it! First 30 minutes are free, then next 30 minutes are 1.50 and so on. Voila! Record's straight :) Have fun and let me know how it went! xxx Tamy
Actually Tamy , there<s a little trick you can use.
If you expect the ride to take more than 30 minutes , you can simply stop halfway to a bixi station , plug in the bike and take another one 2 or 3 minutes after. So it won't count as more than a 30 minutes usage ;-)
im gonna show you my skillz PLOUMB xD

Better to buy your own bike with a locker.
I sold my used mountain bike in perfect condition to someone for 50 euros only, here in FRANCE...

BIXI sure sounds like a great idea. There is one thing that I don't like. You can not pay with cash, you need a bank card and it has a wireless chip.
Soon there won't be any cash and we will be injected with an RFID chip that will be used for driving permit, bank card, health card passport etc.
We already have driving permit "plus" with an RFID to get in the US without a passport
See Aaron Russo interviewed by Alex Jones about this mark of the Beast.
