Myles.....there are five levels of lies: 1) White lies, 2) Lies, 3) Damn lies 4) God damn lies and 5) EVERYTHING THAT A POLITICIAN SAYS!!! Honestly people....
I love this. It means so much that you are so invovled in your own country. I'm in America, and am trying very hard to understand humans in general. It's a sad world we live in, run by people who are blinded by silly things. Reality sucks, but understanding it can bring a better world.
Politicians like to give half-truths and avoiding questions. If you avoid questions you're not really lying. Honesty, directness, and reassurance are the best policies. Politicians make a mistake of treating their constituents as unintelligent non-thinkers. Politics has not change but how ordinary people get information has. Information technology is used as a weapon against politician's bull shit.
gordon brown is a honest man but has to withstand a slow working system as you feel it doesnt comes to the point. for instance he founded the department of energy and climate change. and i really would like to recommend the book from
david jc mackay who wrote the book
sustainable energy -without the hot air.
a factual hot book downloadable from the internet. mackay is working for the department. and might adress a lot of your questions. so lets do it there is fun involved too. mean reading
politicians are "only human" and have a "tough job" Yes you have lost the plot, doctors have a tough job, politicians have a cushy ride on the gravy train.
in my country (Hungary) lies are definately told to decieve and distract ppl. For instance have you heard about our ex-president who frankly claimed that his goverment lied 'all day, all night.' He didn't get kicked out of the chair right away. tricky situation though for he was being honest about lying. I know our country is a mess (postcommunist, semi-kapitalist, rotting society) but I suppose that some things in politics are the same everywhere.
the point of dishonesty in politics isn't like, 'to put it simple' for us, because they find us immature and they handle us like a faceless crowd that needs to listen to the same meaningless phrases again and again not to get pissed off,
The whole point of making people dodge questions is so that the political party in power appears organized and behind the prime minister. If they all spoke their minds, parties would appear to be in chaos and all over the place.
In fairness, we ellect based on political manifestos (not always what you get but forget about that for the moment) and not the individual opinions- so what they think is to some extent irrelevent; it is what the party i voted for thinks that counts.
I completely get you. I think this video relates enormously to the MP expenses scandal thats been going on at the moment.
Have you seen the new Labour MP 'vote for us' thing on TV? Basically what theyve done is criticise half a dozen Conservative's policies (each focusing on a different age group)...and thats it. They dont state whatsoever what their party could do to improve the country, not a word is mentioned about how they can make things better. Basically theyre relying on name-calling now.
I think at the moment it's more important to worry about the recession. This is where we NEED 100% honesty. The British public badly need loads of French blood. this recession was caused by greed ( bankers, politicians, managers to name a few ) they take /get high wages and don't give a monkey about low earners or the country. This country is AWASH with money but it don't get pass the managers to the services..
Brother I'm Canadian. ANd in saying that ,I hear you sooooooo much WE have inheireted our house of com, from you Brit"s And it is way out of date . Let's face it. We need to Change it. They just yell at one another . Let's get life working to this Mate.. God Blesss
Hey Myles, I totally agree with you that politicians need to be more honest about stuff.
Did you know about the MySociety websites which allow you to communicate with your MP easily and see what decisions he/she has made in Parliament etc? They're extremely useful and they've played a large part in bringing politics closer to ordinary folk. Just google "writetothem" and "theyworkforyou" for 2 of the best MySociety creations.
you got real attractive in this one! hahahha Oh and btw! I completely agree with u on like, almost EVERYTHING you said! x FInally, someone with a braincell lol an OPEN MINDED BRAINCELL lol :p ROK ON! XD
we, the british, fought the monarchy, because they were very harsh and repressive, and kept telling us lies, and persecuting (from which stems the word "prosecution").
They got back in power 11 yrs later, on the premise that WE the people "voted" them back.
This was before women even had a vote, and the vote was actually for about 10% of the population.
Now, they seem to have taken power back, and when Charles gets caught giving orders to politicians, its brushed over.
Myles, you are a very thoughtful and articulate young person. We need more like you. You make so many good points. I've watched this charade played by our politicians and media for years and wondered how they get away with it. I guess Americans just don't want to hear the truth. But it is a shame because it is destroying America. Keep up the good work!!!
No,, it didn´t. Your comment is complete bullshit. Myles is right about the empathizing, we ought to realize how hard "running a country" is, but THEY ought to tell us exactly what´s going on. Which the don´t, and havn´t done so since.. forever.
There are many things wrong with this world and NOBODY IS SORTING THEM OUT!!
I personally find it very hard to trust politions from any country. These people are in a position of power, and when people are in the positon of power, they begin to abuse it. A polition will say anyting to get the people on their side, to keep themselves in power. And for that reason I can't trust a lot of what they say.
I always vote, and just hope and just hope for the grim chance that the candidate i'm voting for MIGHT be telling the truth!
I might post a video response to this later, but right now I don't have the time.
I agree with you totally, we have to empathize with the government- it's probably insanely difficult to manage the affairs of a whole country.
But on the other hand, we elect leaders because of the things they say they'll do- but they only say those things so they'll get elected. Hardly anything ever gets done. The government needs to take a good look at their integrity.
dude, relaxxx! i agree tho, i hate democrats( mostly OBAMA) and why would he pick a VP that has the name Biden, so its Obama-Biden, it sounds like osama binladin! ughh i knno creeeeepppy!
i seriously dont really believe in him actaully none of them. McCain shouldnt be running for a presindent because he's and fart thats falling about he would be another bush letting the fucking keep going and make shit cost more. fuck bush, mccain. i sort of believed in clinton because she has more experience than that big eared porche monkey.
ok well get over hillary she is gone! so its between mcCain and Obama who are you gonna vote for the one who is young and has no experience and has a very very stupidd VP or the one who is older and has more experience and has a very good VP. plus who wants to vote for someone who thinks its ok to kill babys
...and some party's even grow large just from pointing fingers at the other party's...without even havin' their OWN agenda. They get voters from the angry mob ~ a group of people who's mostly just frustrated with how their country is being (runned) and don't even care enough to question if the party they support HAS found any solutions themselves... HuGe question/theme Myles; larger than a 500character worth "answer"!;)
I think the real reason you don't get politicians being honest is because they serve the powerful elites. If they are to keep power they need to mislead and subvert the rest of those who they keep power from. Being vague ans using lots of rhetoric is part of the wider deception. Like pretending people can have a say.
Have posted a link of the website I am a forum Moderator of for all to see Myles. Our British government is a bit wishy-washy at the moment. All I see in the paper is politicians being mean to Gordon Brown. Whether he is right for our country or not is another debate, but all the parties seem the same. The public want answers to why knife crime is so high, why some prisoners are given two years for killing as a "life sentence". How celebs can escape it because of their status. I could rant on..
We all our part in this world and if we do nothing we GET nothing. Politicians must always be honest about themselves otherwise the country gets what it gets and nobody gets anything.
Work on your problems rather than blame someone and IF the governments are doing something wrong, its wanting power and ignoring the needy. AMAZING MYLES
Your competely right but the thing is 1 person alone doesn't have to power to do anything and everyone else is to much of an asshole to support the cuase or just doesn't care and pushes you out till the movement dies down
Miles, you seem to be focused on the style in which the politicians operate and discuss. Clearly you dont like their style. Much like they might not like your hat, which is also an item of style. Perhaps they wont even allow you in parliament with that hat. You need to focus on an issue. Find a matter of consequence. You have the energy. Present your arguments around something concrete and relevant. Chopo
Myles they are all like this they call it LAWYER SPEAK. They can not be held accountable to it if they don't say it. Like Bill Clinton " I did not have sexual relations with that woman" ....BUT HE DID EVERY THING OTHER THEN SEX. LOL
dge on the topics but fer seriousness you'll find I have a mentallity and state of mind far beyond average 14 year olds so and the way I think is very unique a way of thinking only capable of a special few people follow, its a way of thinking that can't be beaten so keep this in mind if your gonna reply against any of my comments on this vid
P.S.
if you read all my comments thank you for being interested in my opinion please feel free to comment against me
3: Politicians chose their role chose to be who they are who they wanted to be so don't waste your breath defending them becuase in todays modern society if you defend or go against no one really gives a fuck anymore and they shut you out and be all like "SHUT UP SHUT UP I DON'T WANNA HERE IT SHUT UP THE WORLDS GONNA END IN FLAMES ANYWAY SO JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP I DON'T GIVE A SHIT JUST DIE!"
(BTW)
I'm only 14 years old so granted I may not have the most knowle
1: POLITICIANS WILL NEVER KNOW WHAT ITS LIKE TO BE A COMMON MAN >:( EVERY PRESIDENT OTHER THEN LIKE 1 OR 2 HAVE BEEN CATHOLIC AND THEY WERE ASSASSINATED!!! Seriously every president or politician was already a celebrity or something or their father was a politician and his father and his father and so forth then when they marry their wives fathers are all rich not many presidents have been on the level of the common man
2: The government officials all have a ability to twist words never straigh
The reason why politicians lie is simple: because they´re hiding the secret agenda. Call it a theory, but it´s a fact. Some political actors are bad actors, like Bush or Merkel. But some are really good like Bill Clinton for example.
Anyway, I encourage your path of being politically interested and asking questions, it´s an important part to look at, even if someone doesn´t consider himself as such a political person, like I do.
If you look for answers you will find them sooner or later.
And next year there are other elections coming (last year it was federal) so i'm not expecting much honesty for the next year. Over the last year I lost pretty much all of interest for politics in general, so at the moment I'm just waiting for next year's elections, hoping that improvements will come...
Yeah, I totally understand you, Miles. Here in Belgium politicians are already over a year (since july 2007) busy to agree on 40-year old problem, some community questions and a state reform and other things which have nothing to do with the public health, the environment, general wellness, etc. To this point nothing is decided and instead of saying that it didn't work, they say they're working on it.
Politics will REALLY affect you when you start paying your own Council Tax, Mortgage, Electricity and Gas bill, Road Tax and house insurances. All people in the UK want is a fair deal in their standard of living (depending on their income) whats so annoying is all the new laws coming out that are messing around with our way of life and don't tell me that you don't know what im getting at.
In all honesty I've never been interested in politics but, with an election coming up in November, I'm trying to take an interest. The biggest frustration I have though is when our politicians come up with an answer to an issue that seems completely absurd. Unfourtunately there is no unbiased source to explain the issue nor do any of the politicians really explain their reasoning for it. This makes it difficult for young voters to understand and care about the issues.
Anyway you put it, I would rather have the house of commens run my country rather then the idiots who run this one.Our President is a murderer, lier, theif, all around devil child. At least your government gets things done for the most part. Nothing ever gets solved here! Love my country , hate my government. I did't vote for this mess.
I think the conventional wisdom is that politicians that speak the truth don't get elected. Unfortunately, I believe that politicians as a group will not speak the truth until a prominent politician gets elected while speaking the non-PC truth.
Until that happens, they will continue to lie & say what they think will get them elected. It's human nature to do what needs to be done to achieve a goal (getting elected).
We have to change and accept bitter truth & vote for it. Then they'll change.
a very thought provoking video Myles. I have always felt the Government is so out of touch with the country that the ideal Prime Minister would be a down-to-earth honest person but on the other hand nobody like that would survive in the modern world of politics and like your example, they could be the best manager in the world but will get chastized for the mistake of people under them. I'll spread the word and I hope your video gets noticed
Have you seen what Lieberman is up to lately with Youtube censorship? Look it up. It's well known Lieberman will be a top guy in a McCain administration because he's a fellow Neocon. This is what you get from Neocons who see devils everywhere. More wars. More censorship. Less freedom. And a ballooning debt that your grandchildren's children will still be paying to China. SOMEONE has to say ENOUGH. How many more wars you want to start, John? Georgia, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan... where else?
What I DON'T like is the way leaders lie and create wedges between people. War is very profitable, but you don't have to go to the point where Bush said we had to support the war to support the troops. I'm a military mom AND a peace activist. I believe there's a better way to deal with problems. Bush hypnotized us with propaganda by repeating things over and over, and this is crap and has created a mindset here in America and hell in my family. Posting a short vid I made.
Honesty is ideal. If politics will be honesty-filled maybe the world can become a better place. Reality bites though and with that it is painful to know that (some) politicians are expertly cunning. Talking to the masses like we don't know nothing about whatnots of the world around us and thinking they can make us oversee political freckles that they try to hide.

I have been told one time too many, though, that you will never actually know why politicians are being "politicians" unless you are inside the system. And to that I agree. The shoe needs to fit before you walk the walk. However, what is frustrating is that they (politicians) have this tendency to think that with the "right words" they can actually go away with the stains that is obviously creating the whole political filth. Ergo, they tend to assume we are all idiots in their own "polite" way.
as a citizen of the usa i can appreciate your frustration with politics as they are. we must become aware of what is important and what is trivial. the truth about 9/11, mars, the origin of the universe. the pending collapse of the world economy. greed. ambition. competition or cooperation, etc. the list is long. all require truth. the facts. all involve various human natures. a meeting of minds.yours was a great attempt to present the argument. i just hope the solution won't be more blood.
Especially the fact that the PM get's put to blame when 95% of the time they're not the ones who made the error; it's ridiculous.
Also, yes, the house of lords is ridiculously childish. I've seen it a few times and it's so childish how everyone acts; it's like watching young children talk about politics. They all need to grow up. Seriously
Especially about how you said there are always people that tell politicians that you can say this, etc. What ever happened to freedom of speech?
And the issues; politicians should be able to say OK, WE CAN'T DO THIS, BUT IF WE TRY THIS, MAYBE SOMETHING CAN WORK OUT. It's SO simple to do; tell the people what they NEED to hear not what you think will get you elected.
i don't really know much about this but i think they should be honest and everything yeah and sorry i can't give a better comment.....and this is a great vid i love your vids :D
dude blade were u in clerks 2 in the scene where jay and silent bob were sellin u drugs.... msg me back wit that cuz u do som wat look like hthat dude
i think politicians are in a tough spot when it comes to honesty. its like people think they are super human and never screw up. when they arent honest everyone gets upset and when they are honest (about politics and their personal lives) people get upset. its a lose lose situation.
ok so firstly this was an excellent video that should get the discussion going
I personally feel that honesty is something modern politics lacks. We elect politicians to run our nation, like shareholders of a company we have a right to know what goes on.
Politicians must be answerable to the people for us to live in a democracy.
The media, politicans and money all come together to remove politics and policy decisions from the public view.
GB gave you such a strange answer. No, he didn't answer your question really did he? Don't attempt to empathise with politicians, their of a different (sociopathic) mindset to voters. Politicians have no empathy to their political nation, only to the needs of their political party. Politics means getting your party into power to create an easier political/economic climate in order to push through policies unopposed, thus enhancing the wealth/power of their parties...Cntd
financial backers. No, you won't ever get mature attitudes from politicians in the HofC debates. The House is basically similar to one large courtroom with barristers/advocates all going for it in unison (only on opposing sides...) Boris Johnson is a very clever politician (his speeches are so good, their almost edible). Politics comprises 95% party politics, 5% "concessionary spin". I think you were respectful and reverent to Mr Brown, he would be wise to keep in with you if I were him! :D
playing devils advocate, how much truth do people really want? 1 person can be intelligent but a crowd stupid. bare minimum info protects the public from troubles they need not know. They could be honest and tell us how many kids died of lukemia due to lack of funds, or the chances of catching MRSA.i'd rather not know. They dont tell you everything because it would be stupid to in a blame nation society. i only want to know about the bits that affect me directly. i'll shut up now :) Xx
that is so right.when you watch the usual idiotic politicians in their speeches they never answer the question.they always find a way to go around the question and elaborate on it, and its all bull shit. they'll never be honest.
1. They put themselves up for the jobs, they have to expect hassel, politicians don't age well for a reason and everyone knows this.
2. They have to be sold as a product, they are literally marketing their 'promises' in an attempt to reach as many voters as possible. Being honest is compromising.
You're right Myles, but it will never happen.
And I AM saying never.
"We don't have justice, we have the justice system."
All the MPs, Lords, PM, etc are all puppets. They don't have control. The strings are pulled from closed doors. We are manipulated by the media. When the Torys get elected in 2010. The same agenda will continue. We get tricked into thinking the people have a say. Look into the ILLUMINATI. Big Brother is watchin at there.
I understand what you mean about constantly thinking that there's someone coaching the politicians. They don't always give a straight answer. It's like they dance around the topic and only say things that make them sound better.
It's all spin. If the Government is struggling, the powers that be will prey upon it and do their best to hinder the party so they get forward their own agendas and for their own personal gain.
I agree, you need honestly in politics. I wish they'd just say what they think, it'd be better, at least you know what you're getting. And I also agree we need empathy. I imagine the PM gets alot of crap thrown his way.
I find your government very interesting. It is a functioning democracy but a single person runs the government. I am a political science major and we are just starting to learn about your government.
Politics is partially a game, most politicians lie in order to take a position that will benefit them.
A lot of politicians are about deception and partial truths.
Myles, how about a new webcam based political party... The Logical Party ... all discussion done openly, the party aim to win seats at the houses of parliament and eventually move all political debate away from parliament into an internet based "house of commons" where anyone can join in, offer views, debate and discuss how best to run our country.
You have expressed exactly the same thoughts I have on politics. I have NEVER seen an MP answer a question in a straightforward manner that actually tells anybody what they want to know. I can't currently vote, but if I could, I would definitely vote for a politician that was upfront about what was happening rather than putting a spin on everything. Unfortunately, such a person does not exist. It seems to be all about getting elected and not fixing the country.
I think they will never be frank enough for us and I feel very naive that I would like that to happen still. The debating is really childish,I agree!I can't believe they actually get money for doing that!(Love your outfit on Channel4,it's so cool and defeats stupid prejudices adults have)
I love how you talk and I love how logically you build up videos and the topics you discuss, especially not just telling your opinion and that's the truth-like, but really knowing that a lot of ppl watch ur vids.I agree that no politician can work so that he can please everyone, but also, many cases it ain't just a prejudice to say that politicians lie to get money and to make themselves rich while they still are in that position to do so.Basically everything happens bcs of money and power...:S
ya huh u hit the nail on the head here. but still you will need a damn mean response in order to make any difference.. politicians will still be speaking white lies for a long time.
Boris Johnson used to be my local MP. He was good, slightly mad, but good. t frustrates me when anyone skirts around the question, not just in politics, something needs to be done.
I don't understand or pay attention to politics, but I've never thought it fair everybody complaining about the government and prime minister. Surely they're trying their best to do whatever they do. xD This makes me feel stupid.
I love Myles. He rocks. love the 888 tshirt! I have one too. everything is controlled and I have become so jaded. I believe and trust no one in our government. I always try to remember that the media has an agenda. Smiley:D
Politicians are almost just the packaging to a product.. they sugar coat the issues and dance around them in an attempt to counter all the negative 'truths' we hear about all the time in the press. They have and always will be educated to attract the masses, and unfortunately telling the truth straight up is not a part of that; maybe they NEED to be the brave face, and sweeten the truth a little so that we dont feel totally hopeless about the tragically destructive world we really live in.
Politicians don't tell the truth because they think that "the people can't handle it". That's the impression that I get. I believe that Brown is pretty stupid, but hasn't done a huge amount wrong. I think its more the highish up politicians that make the mistakes as the PM doesn't affect the actual population that much. Mind you, I'm 13, so I don't scrutinize tax levels etc. because it doesn't affect me. And BTW, the against the government part is much longer LOL :)
I subscribed to you yesterday and this is a very interesting video...
i totally agree in that the government (of England) never gets to the point when discussing topics and it always comes across like they are holding something back. i think every MP should say exactly what they think, i personally would give them more respect for that even if i totally dissagreed.
i feel like a person can never really get a straight answer from a politician, but he's right we do need to fix the system and everyone knows its messed up even if they don't admit it. change is the only way to keep from digging ourselves deeper.
Gordon Browns been given loadsa stick because he became PM at a bad time, with the floods, the attempted terrorist attack on Glasgow airport and the credit crunch.
In America the Republicans have been relentlessly moving from wide spread ownership of radio and tv media to ownership by just a few - Rupert Murdoch comes to mind. So, it is the internet that I depend on for news, from BBC is the best for me. PPl like Dobson who used to talk on and on about how women should be in the home has reversed himself and given Sarah Palin his blessing :) well, I don't think I can reach the millions of white women who want a woman in the white house:)
Well said. And I'm a white woman who backed H.Clinton, but I'm certainly not backing the McCain/Palin ticket. Rest assured that not all white women will be voting on the basis of their sex. :)
I hope you are right! I am in Illinois so not much tv adverts from Obama so it's difficult to know what he and Biden are doing. I hope they don't have an advisor from the Dukakis and Kerry campaigns. :)
This is a difficult question for me to answer. On one hand, YES I want nothing but honesty & maturity from our politicians. On the other hand not everyone is mature enough to deal with honesty. When politicians are caught in lies or trying to avoid certain subjects, they are called out on it. If they tell the truth about issues people raise up & automatically assume they don't know how to do their jobs. It is a double edged sword for them.
Exactly. I just hate it when politicians are clearly not being "themselves". Of course there are limitations to how much you can expose yourself. Maby the people are too demanding, wanting 100% perfect governing? And that's why politicians are forced to try and please people without actually having anything to offer? And everyone ends up disapointed.
Offtopic, have I seen that shirt somewhere before? Cos I saw it in a dream couple of weeks back and can't place it anywhere in real life, freaky
1. No comment given on his belief, but a statement that Freedom of speech has been increased rather than restricted.
2. No comment given on his belief, in fact the whole phrase is overlooked.
3. To follow on from the lack of answers, no comment on his belief is given, simply a resounding and rather familiar statement claiming that "his" government will increase freedom of speech.
By what means and measures will they achieve this? We haven't been told.
people criticise the goverment, but the whole system is wrong, not just the goverment itself but how people react. my personal opinion is that its time for the public to grow up and stop expecting their world to be sorted out for them, taxes or not
about the house of commons , iv sead that for years, they act like school children!!!! and it is the most annoying thing when you watch them dodge the question! your so right, people who run out country need to speak honestly sadly tho's who do try and tell you straight often dont get very far because thats not what most govement memmbers want when trying to gain votes
I think in any situation where two people/groups are competing for public opinion there is going to be more PR management than truth telling. People don't want to hear bad news, only that things are going to get better. So that's always how things are presented, NO MATTER WHAT. Not so much dishonesty, as being economical with the truth. It's built into the political system, not so much the individuals that make it up.
any way i can sent this to John Stewart or Steven Colbert? *giggle* i dont think anyone can send it to Pres. Bush bc he may not know how to turn the computer on
You make a great point about the Prime Minister- it's rediculous for one person to right all the wrongs and run a country perfectly.
When a legislative body fails to make a change when there clearly is a problem that could be helped by a law or such, well, that's just wrong. A government is supposed to be FOR the people, but it seems as if we're fighting a battle against it.
I'm gonna be very political incorrect by saying that I think it boils down to the fact that most people in the UK (or anywhere else for that matter) and therefor most people that vote aren't as intellectual as you (or me, but lets not get arrogant).
The real world is not black and white but has a lot of nuance, therefor political solutions also have a lot of nuance. Say that you're a candidate president before the elections (I realize it doesn't work like that in the UK, but it does in the US..
..) And you're running because you honestly believe you have solutions (with their nuances and therefor their negative sides). Well, to be able to do anything you need to be president, to be president you need to win the elections and to win the elections you need to convince the less intellectuals that your solution is the best. See where I'm going?
Now the problem is one similar to the business world, if you decide out of honestly to tel the truth and therefor the negative side of your story
Then your competition will take advantage of that and tell a more positive story. With most voters not being able to fully comprehend the nuance of the situation, the more positive story will win the election, and you don't get a change to proof that your nuanced solution is in fact the better one.
This is similar to business in the sense that if your employer doesn't fire people to be more cost efficient, then the competition will and will be cheaper and your employer might even go bankroot...
(of course that's the worst case scenario). So that the whole "small painful changes are better for you in the end" story.
If you look at history, the arguments with the least nuance have always been incredibly powerful. "If we kill all the Jews our problems will be solved" is what got the fast majority of Germans to follow Hitler, and Germany has a lot of intellectuals even.
I agree with your ideology of honesty, but I'm afraid it's not realistic.
They imply positions and provide vague solutions to appear like their committing when they actually aren't committing.
This enables them to deny having given a specific solution when something doesn't work in their favor after they've been elected. It also enables them to milk the hell out of favorable situations by reallocating funds to the same projects, ad nauseam.
The politicians and parties want to be in power, right? But to get people to want you to have that power, you have to get them to like you. How? By stating only the positive aspects of their policies, and letting the public figure out the rest by themselves (which they're unlikely to do). It's pretty much all propaganda. If politicians were honest and stated all the upshots of their policies, then people wouldn't vote, because of the "negatives".
2 Disclaimers straight off. 1st, I'm not British, I'm American so much of what I say may not apply to your frustration. 2nd, I really appreciate your honest optimism about government and people in general. It's a main reason I watch your vids.
I've been watching the US elections closely since the 1st candidate announced and it hit me that Mr.SmithGoesToWashington types aren't really embraced right now. The American public is vicious with our 'celebrities'.
Putting yourself out there is somehow justification for becoming a target for some of the worst of human impulses. I think we're a generation largely without empathy - we get a sick voyeuristic pleasure out of watching others fail or seeing them knocked down a peg. I think most democratic countries could have open honest government if it were what they wanted - public outrage is a powerful thing. Evasive dishonesty in politics is partly our fault for not holding them accountable when it matters
This election has shown me that it's not respected for a politician to refuse to 'play the game'. I think we as a culture (again Americans -I don't know anyone else well enough to say) love to hate politicians (and authority/lawyers in general) because it's comfortable to retain moral leverage over people who hold wealth And power. Maybe our self-esteem doesn't tolerate truly positive figures so we call it elitism. Maybe we want them babbling nonsense to void our obligation to pay attention.
i think politicians ( from local councils all the way to the PMs office) live by the creed " if u cant dazzle them with your brilliance baffle them with your bullshit" your asking for honesty in politics isnt that like fucking for virginity ???????
paulytheaussie, bit of a strange way of looking at it, they're really not that bad. have you ever had a conversation with a politician? most of them are full of themselves, but a few of them a really nice genuine people and you shouldn't put that generalization on them.
Hmmm.. honesty in politics??? Do you really think that if Bush had told us the he intended to make all his buddies rich, start massive wars over controll of the world oil resevoirs, take money from the hard working people and give it to the rich, turn his back on our people in the middle of disasters and tear the world's economy apart he would have gotten elected?? I love my country (US) but our people are dumb as fuck when it comes to elections.
Its the same in Germany. Election coming every 4 years they promise lots but never keep any. They won't raise taxes, only a few months later they do. Personally I am sick of it and always make my vote invalid.
As for long term projects... How are they even supposed to succeed with elections being so 'frequent'? I really wish there would be more cooperation between the different factions (especially long term) and yes, I also wish for the truth. 'specially long term f.e. environmental projects.
Thanks for making this video Myles. I think that your points on the UK house of commons is something I can relate to. I'm Canadian and the few times I've watched our house of commons I've had to turn the tv off. It's almost farcical to me, children on playgrounds behave with more respect for one another.
I can't help wonder if part of the reason our premier called an election was that the Americans are having one, damned if we don't have to try and be just like them.

Information technology is used as a weapon against politician's bull shit.

gordon brown is a honest man but has to withstand a slow working system as you feel it doesnt comes to the point. for instance he founded the department of energy and climate change. and i really would like to recommend the book from
david jc mackay who wrote the book
sustainable energy -without the hot air.
a factual hot book downloadable from the internet. mackay is working for the department. and might adress a lot of your questions. so lets do it there is fun involved too. mean reading

in my country (Hungary) lies are definately told to decieve and distract ppl.

Punk7680 2 years ago

The irony is, that Gordon Brown was not allowed to speak "frely" when he replied to you.
He asid that free speach was an important part of our "constitution", but we dont actually have a constitution.
You are TOTALLY correct though, they DO keep repeating the problems, and pretending they are NEW. I see the same bull popping up now, as in the 80's.
But you will learn, that the main battle is between Royalists, and the People. Check out "sir humphrey" - he is the Royalist in "yes minister"
mikeybrumbrum 3 years ago
we, the british, fought the monarchy, because they were very harsh and repressive, and kept telling us lies, and persecuting (from which stems the word "prosecution").
They got back in power 11 yrs later, on the premise that WE the people "voted" them back.
This was before women even had a vote, and the vote was actually for about 10% of the population.
Now, they seem to have taken power back, and when Charles gets caught giving orders to politicians, its brushed over.
This is a Monarchy !

HuGe question/theme Myles; larger than a 500character worth "answer"!;)
SaraMUSt 3 years ago

Georgia, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan... where else?
polijunky 3 years ago

Ergo, they tend to assume we are all idiots in their own "polite" way.
hermaladrOitness 3 years ago
as a citizen of the usa i can appreciate your frustration with politics as they are. we must become aware of what is important and what is trivial. the truth about 9/11, mars, the origin of the universe. the pending collapse of the world economy. greed. ambition. competition or cooperation, etc. the list is long. all require truth. the facts. all involve various human natures. a meeting of minds.yours was a great attempt to present the argument. i just hope the solution won't be more blood.

I personally feel that honesty is something modern politics lacks. We elect politicians to run our nation, like shareholders of a company we have a right to know what goes on.
Politicians must be answerable to the people for us to live in a democracy.
The media, politicans and money all come together to remove politics and policy decisions from the public view.
rtigg3r 3 years ago

1. They put themselves up for the jobs, they have to expect hassel, politicians don't age well for a reason and everyone knows this.
2. They have to be sold as a product, they are literally marketing their 'promises' in an attempt to reach as many voters as possible. Being honest is compromising.

I don't understand or pay attention to politics, but I've never thought it fair everybody complaining about the government and prime minister. Surely they're trying their best to do whatever they do. xD This makes me feel stupid.

Bambi00507 3 years ago
Politicians don't tell the truth because they think that "the people can't handle it". That's the impression that I get. I believe that Brown is pretty stupid, but hasn't done a huge amount wrong. I think its more the highish up politicians that make the mistakes as the PM doesn't affect the actual population that much. Mind you, I'm 13, so I don't scrutinize tax levels etc. because it doesn't affect me. And BTW, the against the government part is much longer LOL :)

i totally agree in that the government (of England) never gets to the point when discussing topics and it always comes across like they are holding something back. i think every MP should say exactly what they think, i personally would give them more respect for that even if i totally dissagreed.

i feel like a person can never really get a straight answer from a politician, but he's right we do need to fix the system and everyone knows its messed up even if they don't admit it. change is the only way to keep from digging ourselves deeper.

quitefranklylaney 3 years ago

It is a double edged sword for them.
crosstoo 3 years ago

His answers...

MarxPayne337 3 years ago
I'm gonna be very political incorrect by saying that I think it boils down to the fact that most people in the UK (or anywhere else for that matter) and therefor most people that vote aren't as intellectual as you (or me, but lets not get arrogant).
The real world is not black and white but has a lot of nuance, therefor political solutions also have a lot of nuance. Say that you're a candidate president before the elections (I realize it doesn't work like that in the UK, but it does in the US..
funkwurm 3 years ago
..) And you're running because you honestly believe you have solutions (with their nuances and therefor their negative sides). Well, to be able to do anything you need to be president, to be president you need to win the elections and to win the elections you need to convince the less intellectuals that your solution is the best. See where I'm going?
Now the problem is one similar to the business world, if you decide out of honestly to tel the truth and therefor the negative side of your story
funkwurm 3 years ago
Then your competition will take advantage of that and tell a more positive story. With most voters not being able to fully comprehend the nuance of the situation, the more positive story will win the election, and you don't get a change to proof that your nuanced solution is in fact the better one.
This is similar to business in the sense that if your employer doesn't fire people to be more cost efficient, then the competition will and will be cheaper and your employer might even go bankroot...
funkwurm 3 years ago

I agree completely with you Myles.
VanGaore 3 years ago
2 Disclaimers straight off. 1st, I'm not British, I'm American so much of what I say may not apply to your frustration. 2nd, I really appreciate your honest optimism about government and people in general. It's a main reason I watch your vids.
I've been watching the US elections closely since the 1st candidate announced and it hit me that Mr.SmithGoesToWashington types aren't really embraced right now. The American public is vicious with our 'celebrities'.
kittydreamz86 3 years ago
Putting yourself out there is somehow justification for becoming a target for some of the worst of human impulses. I think we're a generation largely without empathy - we get a sick voyeuristic pleasure out of watching others fail or seeing them knocked down a peg. I think most democratic countries could have open honest government if it were what they wanted - public outrage is a powerful thing. Evasive dishonesty in politics is partly our fault for not holding them accountable when it matters
kittydreamz86 3 years ago
This election has shown me that it's not respected for a politician to refuse to 'play the game'. I think we as a culture (again Americans -I don't know anyone else well enough to say) love to hate politicians (and authority/lawyers in general) because it's comfortable to retain moral leverage over people who hold wealth And power. Maybe our self-esteem doesn't tolerate truly positive figures so we call it elitism. Maybe we want them babbling nonsense to void our obligation to pay attention.
kittydreamz86 3 years ago
Politicians suffer from schizophrenia and can not tell the truth as they dont know who they are at any one given moment in time.
rusian1220 3 years ago
i think politicians ( from local councils all the way to the PMs office) live by the creed " if u cant dazzle them with your brilliance baffle them with your bullshit" your asking for honesty in politics isnt that like fucking for virginity ???????
paulytheaussie 3 years ago
Brilliant. "Dazzle them with brilliance or baffle them with bullshit."
Octahoney 3 years ago
paulytheaussie, bit of a strange way of looking at it, they're really not that bad. have you ever had a conversation with a politician? most of them are full of themselves, but a few of them a really nice genuine people and you shouldn't put that generalization on them.
thatjojokid 3 years ago
If politicians told the truth they would all have to resign or would not have been elected in the first place.
Blame is always at the Prime Minister its hard but that's the job why cant he just take responsibility and tell the truth?
At least he answered your question or not as the case was.

Hmmm.. honesty in politics??? Do you really think that if Bush had told us the he intended to make all his buddies rich, start massive wars over controll of the world oil resevoirs, take money from the hard working people and give it to the rich, turn his back on our people in the middle of disasters and tear the world's economy apart he would have gotten elected?? I love my country (US) but our people are dumb as fuck when it comes to elections.
STONEDTOTHEBONE 3 years ago
