  • How much more pipeline do we neet?

  • A performance of Tosca from Verona today at Classica.HD...:)

    Hamburg/Germany, October 6, 2011

  • The best Scarpia he just exudes menace in this scene.

    Sends chills down my spine

  • please make this available to mobile users!!

  • Just watched the entire production. Raimondi a brilliantly malevolent (and beautifully sung) Scarpia. (He does malevolent pretty nicely, doesn't he? - those avian eyes, that tight grimace...fabulous.)

  • Brilliant!!! Molto bene.

  • bello bravi orchestra e coro....

  • I think the Swiss Guard-like costumes do not match the era of Scarpia (around 1800).

Grande Ruggero!!!

  • JUST WOW!

  • è tutto in mano alle FOTTUTE agenzie ormai.

    è una catena di montaggio.

  • io l'ho sentito in autunno a Firenze! GRANDE!!!

  • I don't mean to detract from the beauty of this video....but I have to point out Pee Wee Herman at 2:52

  • Call the police...this guy needs to be stopped

  • @Operaddict he IS the police

this is why people shouldn't be in charge of things

  • Great aria and performance. Th e text of this aria is very sexual and creepy, no wonder Tosca was so shocking when the opera was first performed.

Grande attore e basso-baritone! RAVA

  • A singing actor if ever there was one. Absolutely perfect for the role.He must rank with the best Scarpia's of all time, and there were many. I think the maestro would approve.

  • scarpia is my favourite character from "tosca" and this aria and the final is awesome!!

E fu COLPO DI FULMINE!!!!!!!

  • @bodiloto QUESTO PRIMO ATTO è FANTASTICO .LA MUSICA TI COINVOLGE .IL FINALE è BELLISSIMO!!!!

    "cantare"...

  • @bodiloto Mi spiace...

    Ciao.

  • Stelle, che sento! Abracadabranque disapprova i miei gusti! Come potrò sopravvivere all'onta?

CIAO !!!

  • @31122051 analisi perfetta,bravo!

  • @31122051 Agreed, why are so many people are convinced this guy is a bass is beyond me, he is "a pieno titolo" a baritone and should be proud of it.

  • Guys please chill this is about music, not religion! Talk to the dude who set it up like that, but a youtube discussion is gonna lead nowhere, so give it a rest and enjoy wonderful Puccini instead!

  • Hátborzongató ,

  • About voice he is not my favorite, but about actuation Rugero Raimondi is for me the greattest Scarpia, that i believe. He makes owns the Scarpia´s role. The obsession about Tosca , dessire, even he looks unsane! Genius.

Simplemente genial.

  • From an Italian-music hater: beautiful cinematic production and splendid singing on the part of Ruggero Raimondi!! To those who prefer Tito Gobbi when choosing between the two (having seen a video of him in the same rôle of Scarpia): if you want more of a ham & more obvious actor, then Gobbi is more the man; if you want subtlety, a more convincing Scarpia as a human being, & all the notes properly sung, then Raimondi wins (as he does with me, much as I prefer him in Borís or Arkël by far!!).

  • The only trouble with this segment is the apparent staging of the "Te Deum" Mass as being OUTSIDE the church - the clergy et al are processing out of the church instead of to the altar (surely wrong!!!)!! Presumably that's because the film-making crew preferred to use the main sanctuary in itself as the fictitious "Attavanti Chapel", even if the actual church of Sant' Andrea della Valle {St. Andrew of the Valley} is otherwise the genuine setting for Act I of this silly excuse for an opera.

  • Now, before people write me off as a bigot or Italy-hater (actually their cuisine is excellent): it's especially Italian opera that I loathe. Italian music is OK until the death of Girolamo Frescobaldi (1643), and I must grudgingly say that Respighi's stuff is good; otherwise, everything post-1643 leaves me cold at best, furious at worst. [Why do I then review it occasionally? Simply so as to give myself the chance to re-evaluate my opinions and not be closed-minded...]

  • @LJBSasha Does Vivaldi leave you furious or just cold?

  • @blichilde: Vivaldi leaves me cold

  • To be honest, my likes are mainly post-1850 (with the advent of Brahms, Wagner and the Russian school).

  • @LJBSasha

There is no reason to bring the Blessed Sacrament to the altar: the Ostensorium is made to Bring Him away from the altar, to bless the people.

    You're not catholic, are you?

  • @saltovitale881: No, I'm not Catholic (though I have much sympathy for the Roman Church). However, when a Mass is being celebrated, isn't it done at an altar? Also, granted that a Te Deum service in the Anglican manner can be without Communion, isn't such usually celebrated WITH a Mass in the Roman Church? Thus, it seems to me that - unless the service is being held outdoors - that the procession should go TO the altar.

I honestly welcome your input on this matter. Thank you in advance!

  • Just in case we're not communicating on the same wavelength: I'm presuming here that the Te Deum service is not using bread and wine held over from the Reserved Sacrament from another service (isn't that what the Ostensorium is supposed to hold in such a case, taking your words literally?), which would then be able to be distributed - if I recall correctly - without going through the actual part of the Mass where previously-unconsecrated elements are consecrated.

  • @LJBSasha Well the Eucharistic Benediction is not in the Mass. In the movie the priest ( a cardinal? he's got the Mitre so he's at least a bishop) holds an Ostensorium. The Ostensorium is never used in the Mass.

So I can positively say that it is not a Mass, that we see in Tosca. It seems the procession of the Corpus Domini, when the bishop holds the Blessed Sacrament and go out the Church, to the street.

The procession goes to the altar only when it ends.

  • @saltovitale881: Thank you so very much! So, in other words the Te Deum service is NOT part of a Mass, but can include a procession of the Sacred Host in the Ostensorium. [While I knew that in the Anglican manner the Te Deum can be either a separate service OR combined with Morning-Prayer Divine Office (Matins) and/or Communion (Mass), I didn't know that the same holds for the Roman Church. My impression was that there, most services would include a Mass.]

  • Still trying to wrestle down some confusion: in other words the Procession of the Consecrated Host (if I remember that being the term for the Blessed Body of Our Lord) not only is never part of a Mass, at the end of any such Procession (including when a Te Deum is celebrated), the Host (Blessed Sacrament), on arrival at the altar, is then put back in the Tabernacle (where the Reserved Sacrament is normally kept), while certain prayers are said/sung and the celebrant kneels in front of it.

  • Finally, saltovitale881, the celebrant in that opera's First Act is called a "cardinal" in the work's full-score ("partitura" in Italian, in case that's who you are).

  • One last point, just that I be fully sure of this: it's in other words not necessary to hold a non-Eucharistic service (one that's not a Mass) at an altar? Have I got this correct? In other words in this scene, a procession including the Host in the Ostensorium can start while facing away from an altar as happens in this film?

Thanks for your patience with me.

  • Oops, missed in that last clause the 'ci' that should go between the 'non' and the 'sono'. "Mea culpa..." O Weh!!!

  • @LJBSasha The "Te, Deum" is an Hymn. We thank God for something. It is sung in December, 31 for the passed year (and for the new). In Visconti's Gattopardo the people sing the "Te, Deum" in the Church when the Prince and his family arrive to Donnafugata. In Tosca the Te Deum is sung to thank God for the Victory against Napoleon (the sacristan says it). The presence of the Blessed Sacrament, maybe it's a director choice. Notice that the Ostensorium is empty (I think for respect).

  • @saltovitale881: sorry but I'm puzzled about your pointing out that the Ostensorium is empty as an apparent gesture of respect - seems somewhat contradictory when you earlier said that the idea of the Procession of the Host is to bring Christ "away from the altar, to bless the people." Isn't then the idea of an empty Ostensorium missing out on that point?

[Please forgive me if this offends you in the least - know that I'm not at all anti-Catholic and am honestly trying to understand.]

  • @saltovitale881: you're right about the "Te Deum" being a hymn of thanksgiving and praise, and that in this case it's used relative to the purported victory at San Giuliano over Napoléon (at Marengo, the French that turn the defeat into victory!). Regarding the Blessed Sacrament's presence: I'm not so sure if it's a director's choice based on the full-score of the opera (which one can see in PDF format on IMSLP {International Music Score Library Project}) and its directions.

  • @LJBSasha Why this should offend me? This "politically correct" begins to be choking, doesn't it? :-)

I said "for respect" , meaning respect by the director. Showing a false Blessed Sacrament in the movie, as a caracter, it's not respectful.

  • @saltovitale881: How right you are about "political correctness" choking me - it's Communism all over again!!!

Yes, you're right about the Ostensorium being best empty under such circumstances, given that it wasn't a real Cardinal or at least bishop displaying it in all probability - if it was, it would have added that much more authenticity (in my opinion).

Much to learn yet (I don't know Visconti's "Gattopardo" - when I get into literature, it will be on my reading list) - thank you!!

  • Can someone please post the one before this? And tell me what it's called?

  • I prefer Sherrill Milnes!

  • @NeoNesscom have u listened to dmitris version? its awesome

  • Muy bueno el video. La puesta, empero, es full boleta.

  • Scarpia es un Scorpio, sin duda... Malo como ese arácnido. Genial interpretación!

  • @bebetonguga scarpia un scorpio?! Uahahahah

  • The finest baritone singer/ actor of the 20th century.

  • A wonderful production. The other characters in the opera are wimp-like compared to the power and brutality of Scarpia brilliantly portrayed here. I've never understood why a high-headed woman like Tosca didn't just dump the weak artist and sleep with Scarpia. She was hardly the retiring sort. I think someone once wrote a short story of them waking up the next morning, having spent a pleasant night and she had completely forgotten the artist. Can anyone help me out with the author?

  • Because 1) Cavaradossi is not weak nor coward: in fact, he's very brave helping Angelotti while risking his own head; nevermind defying Scarpia in the middle of the torture session. 2) Despite the superb portrayal maestro Raimondi gives us here, Scarpia is a murderer, a coward that abuses his power and position so as to get what he wants, not sparing a thought on who he is sending to the gallows, which family he is tearing apart, what sacred ground he is defiling, etc.

  • That's why Tosca, who was raised by nuns in the original play, and who's horrified by what she is forced to do in order to save her lover, always resisted Scarpia's advances on her, and ultimately killed him.

  • Certified Intergalactic! It couldn't get better than this.

  • When he fluently continues the phrase without talking new breath from 2:05 to 2.06 - just gives me the shivers!!!!

  • Impressive in every aspect, this one-shot act is marvelous. The evil and anger, frustration and lust in Scarpia's sight is unparalleled, and camera work is ourtstanding.

  • Very impressive! I saw him last week in Vienna and he was a convincing Scarpia.

  • I saw him also in vienna on the 17.2.

    he was fantastic....

  • Brillant, Raimodi is perfect , the best aria from the best Opera,

  • Scarpia is in all of us.

  • Scarpia's profound hypocrisy/blasphemy is horrific. I am shaken every time I see this video. Bravo, Raimondi! You brought Scarpia to life, and to death.

  • @TheAdmiringFool Well put. It's simply amazing the blending of his evil thinkings in loud voice with the pious hymn sung by the chorus. But isn't true the devil enters the church sometimes? This baritone aria is one of my faves. And Raimondi is a perfect Scarpia.

  • Surley the best Scarpia.

He is also on the fairly reasent recording with Tony Pappano and ROH.

  • Indeed they are.

  • Splendido! Veramente ben interpretato in un magnifico quadro d'insieme!

  • I think that bodiloto loves Raimondi, is absolute obsessed with him...

  • Powerful performance; stunning video. Thank you. Even when a voice is a bit threadbare, a great artist is still compelling.

  • i like this.I am a Gobi fan but this i enjoy.Cool!

  • love the tosca so much,....when i saw it in Quantum of Solace i got teary......the best opera and they put it in james bond doesnt get any better.....always rewind the scene

  • You GOTTA love Scarpia!

  • After this rendition too many women love Scarpia instead of Mario :)

  • Oustanding

  • eccellente interpretazione!

  • Bravissimo!

  • Love desire power and tyranny make you forget god, he became like god, the beast Scorpio in every thing,

  • Excellent and epic music..!

  • what a voice!!

It´s so dark, so powerful... :D

    a great Scarpia

  • Interesting. He took the hem of the Bishops Vestment and kissed it. That is a custom in the Orthodox Church . At the great entrance during the liturgyas the Priest passes with the Chalice and the Diskarion and the faithfull mostly women and some men will bow and kiss his vestment.

  • the contraversary he is saying Tosca you made me forgot my god, thank you for the information,

  • A wonderful discrepancy: Scarpia hardly disguising his words plenty of malice and at the same time a chorus singing a hymn in praise of God. A demon among angels. Beautiful aria. Great opera.

  • acla9000...re: your wonderful discrepancy; I think the dynamics of this scene reverberate in Francis Ford Coppola's Godfather as the murders are undertaken while the child is baptized in the church.

  • Very well reminded, KNS1996DFS!

  • Yes, the analogy is the same. In fact, the Godfather is scripted like an opera. I have used this same analogy before in describing this scene in Tosca. This is the real conflict that permeates the scene, a sacred moment that is juxtaposed against the evil Scarpia is plotting.

  • That's just right!

  • semplicemente fantastico...impressionante,,,Puccini era un genio!

  • Is it just me, or does it seem like Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame based Frollo's song "Hellfire" off of this??

  • Yes, it is very good.Especially in third act, in scene with Amneris .( "Vieni d,Iside al tempio.")He make very even line of singing. I went in Grande teatro , when Aida performed them on stage and i dislike russian singer, which performed Ramfis , because he had dim timbre and awful pronunciation. But, unfortunately, a lot of russian singers ( local stars) can,t sing well and elegantly. But Raimondi can do it, i am sure.-)

  • Scarpia...acciecato dal desiderio...

    Musica travolgente....

    Bellissimo.....

  • Raimondi, immenso!

  • Me also, that scene in Quantum of Solace is immense, the music is fantastic.

  • i've loved this since watching quantum of solace!

  • same haha

  • One of the greatest operatic scenes ever!

  • Agreed!

This, and 'Ave Formosissima' from Orff's Carmina Burana

  • Exactly so

P.S. A proposito, mi chiama Elisabetta( in vita)

  • Suvvia,Leonora-Elisabetta.If you are rally only 16,remember that Raimondi is 50 years older than you...I too think that he's handsome, but I'm not 16,alas.

And unfortunately it isn't true that a beautiful person has necessarily a beautiful soul! (I don't know Raimondi's personality,I must say).
