  • T'is interesting the 4th Doctor had this intro at the end of his run when most would associate this intro with the 5th Doctor.

  • I once lol'd at the scene how Fourth Doctor pretended to be possessed and Romana freaked out :D

  • 3 people here are jealous of The Doctor's scarf

  • Tom Baker was the ultimate Doctor in the 1980s. Especially because he was 'grounded' to Earth standards/ Instead of galavanting to alien worlds, aleins came to Earth. Introducing The Brigadier and U.N.I.T.

Baker's quirks were the best of any TV character of those days.

  • @Rodneyrivera1701 No it was Pertwee who was exiled to earth Tom Baker had Some U.N.I.T But it was pertwee's first season he was grounded to earth

  • @Rodneyrivera1701 You have Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee mixed up. Jon Pertwee played the Doctor during the time that most of the stories were set on Earth. During this time the Doctor had been exlied to Earth by the Time Lords. By the time Tom Baker took over the role the Doctor's punishment had been lifted and he once agian begam 'galavanting' to all kinds of alien worlds.

  • when people say doctor who tom baker is the first words that come to mind

  • one of favorite doctors the opening is one of my favorites as well

  • I've actually never watched Dr. Who, but this REALLY makes me want to!

  • @SwissNarutoAxelFan Really, you should if you get the spare time. I am watching the revived series by myself, but my parents like the classic so I just download an episode off the net, place it on a disc and head over to my parents place. It's a fun process :D

  • tom was a good doctor but all the faces on his titles were crap

  • ive met Tom Baker :D

  • When the stars begin to form his face, it looks like Bob Dylan's =P

  • @arthuraz As opposed to Bob Barker? Damn.

  • The best doctor! And thats saying something given the competiton

  • Star Wars Hyperspace?

  • 2 Daleks gave it thumbs down.

  • Tom Baker will always be The Doctor. He is the best.

  • It's strange that as synthesisers became more accepted in popular music, the Doctor Who theme focussed more on orchestral sounds than the electronics. Anyone else noticed...?

  • Tom Baker is the best

  • This is a very good version of the intro.

  • This is so weird. I'd not seen this before until I found this channel. I never knew this version of the intro existed.

  • dude now wonder i became a raver when i was a teenager :-O

  • this version is good, but the first one was better!

  • The REAL and ONLY Dr. Who is Tom Baker. Loved watching this on WGBH PBS Ch 2 Boston. lol

  • Tom is the Doctor, the definite article you might say.

  • "Jelly Baby?"

  • @DoctorWhoCenter2010 No thanks Im trying to cut down.

  • Tm BAker is of course the best by far. The older ones were far more... "OUT THERE" ... they were philosophers, outcasts, mystics and dreamers. The new re-workings are, I think a disappointment. Yes, they are exciting and visually rich, but they've attempted to take the doctor from "OUT THERE" to "IN HERE" to appeal to youth and modern popular tastes. Perhaps the final doctor, as yet unknown, will be a mystic.

  • @quenby23 Tenant's actually brilliant and I quite liked Eccleston too, but the material's not been in the same league imo since Tom. I think Troughton is the best, but Tom's very close.

  • @quenby23 true and i dont like his romances he has with his companions that ruins it....and i dont like the whole intertwined series what happened to the old days when each episode was standalone and they keep bringing back companions and characters...i mean come on do we really care about who river song is. here is what Tom would say to David and all the new ones "you may be A doctor but i am THE doctor"

  • This is the theme I remember. First introduction to the Doctor was Tom Baker. My dad and I would watch on WGBH in Boston Saturday nights....phenomenal. Now if only I can make this my ring tone...

  • @RazelG make it a ring tone? therre is always a way...

  • this is my favourite sounding theme

  • I love this version of the theme.

  • this is one of the best opening titles ever. especially the theme song.

  • "Want a jellybaby?"

  • Imagine the shock of fans tuning in on this Saturday night in 1980 expecting to see the time tunnel effect and tardis, must have made them jump out of their seats! Surprised Tom Baker didn't like the new title sequence, it definently gets the adrenaline pumping!

  • Anyone else pumped up?

  • tom just had the most charm, and good acting delivery imho. and that rainbow scarf and fro? instantly recogzinable.

og course im biased because thats who i was first introduced to, but ah well. the original cybermen scared me, but the cybermat was even worse. daleks never did, even as a kid i was like, i can just hide behind them, or push them over.

  • I love Bakers face at :10, it looks like he just exhaled a huge lungful of weed smoke from his first hit on a spliff, classic!

  • huhuhuhuh yeeeeeaaaaaaah weeeeeed!

    you are so cool.

  • Tom Baker - the most popular Doctor in the US. No other Doctor has seen so much exposure here.

Hopefully the Tom Baker box set I'm keeping track of will still be on a certain online store when I get my next check.

  • Then you picked right Doctor. His are virtually the only ones getting re-run here. The first Dr.Who I saw, so to me he is the one.

  • Indeed! Genesis of the Daleks, Talons of Weng-Chiang, Horror of Fang Rock. Doctor Who doesn't get any better than that.

Though it would of been nice if the US had the earlier Doctors, we were fortunate to of gotten the best one.

  • @DanJ30 People should try to watch the Jon Pertwee shows as well, a different type of "Doctor" then Tom Baker but some excellent stories. "Spearhead from Space, Terror of the Autons, Claws of Axos, Ambassadors of Death, Day of the Daleks, plus a dozen more that I can't remember.

  • @DanJ30 my favorite episode of all time is Robots of Death but i also love talons of weng-chiang i used to not like it cuz we had it recorded but missed the first three parts so i never understood it, but then it came out on dvd and i got it and then i liked it

  • @KingLashiec

You are right. He is so popular in the U.S., Tom Baker was in an episode of the Simpsons. As a child growing up, he was the only person I knew as the good Doctor. The same way some people only know Sean Connery as Bond...James Bond!

  • @MrBlackSW He was in 3 episodes. His opening was also used in the Family Guy special "Blue Harvest" to parody the Hyperspace effects from Star Wars, and there was a scene with Fourth Doctor cosplayers in American Dad!. There was also the "Who's on First" sketch in Robot Chicken where the Fourth Doctor was on first base on a baseball field.

  • @KingLashiec

And he was on the simpsons. Search Doctor Who on the Simpsons, or the 4th Doctor on the simpsons.

  • @DoctorWhoCenter2010 I was responding to someone who mentioned that fact. ^^;

  • @MrBlackSW

Lol. I'm American/Welsh/Irish. My Dad's from Wales, and my Grandma/Grandpa (Mom's side) are from Ireland. In fact my Aunt (Dad's side) gave us the box set for the series with Chris Eccleston, I was 9 at the time (I'm 13 now) And I love Doctor Who! (New Series and Classic Series) Want a jelly baby? lol.

  • @KingLashiec Yeah that's because they started showing it in America during his era as the Doctor.

  • @KingLashiec except David Tennat

  • EGAD IT'S TOM!!!!!

I remember seeing these titles when I was 4. :)

  • same here I was 4, I remember watching this show not really knowing what was going on but it was stil cool as heck.

  • best dr... but david tennant is also up there... i cant make my mind up

  • I agree with you, Tom Baker was the first Doctor I saw back in 1978 or 1979 here in the US when the show use to come on on the public broadcasting channel!! He's hands down the best Doctor of all time. Tennant is allright but nowhere near Tom's legendary status!!

  • Tom Baker and David Tennant have defined this show the best. They are easily the most iconic Doctor's

  • Thunderfarts no Doctor is more popular. we all grew up with diffferent Doctors. my Doctor is Peter Davison Thats the appeal of Doctor Who. Every generation has a doctor. my mum and dad had william hartnell patrick troughton and jon pertwee

  • This is true. I watch a little of the new stuff and it's alright, but I miss the old episodes. To me, Dr. Who is the 70s and 80s and the Tom Baker ones were the best.

  • Hail from America! Which Dr. Who is the most popular?

  • The Tom Baker was my favorite. I'm 31 and American and grew up on that one. I suppose just like Star Trek everyone has a favorite. I think most people would still associate with Tom Baker, though (remember The Simpsons episode).

  • Ah, the good old days.

  • My favourite Doctor Whoo. Not fussed on these new ones though, I think their picking young men to attract the female viewers.

  • if you noticed, the doctor gets younger every time he regenerates...

  • Well Not quite - Here is a list of the ages when they took over the role William Hartnell: 55 years Patrick Troughton: 46 years Jon Pertwee: 50 years Tom Baker: 40 years Peter Davison: 29 years Colin Baker: 40 years Sylvester McCoy: 44 years Paul McGann: 36 years Christopher Eccelston: 41 years David Tennant: 34 years

  • Who is rubbish? The Birthday dates are from IMDB. The role dates are from the BBC Classic site. Peter Davison was born April 12 1951. He took over the role in 1981, aired in 1982. He was 29 as filming took place before his B-Day. Colin Baker was born June 8 1943. Took the role filmed 1983. Aired in 1984. Christopher Eccelston born Feb 16, 1964. Shot in 2005. That's 41. And the best for last..Tom Baker birthday Jan 20, 1934. Filmed in 1974. 40 Years.

    Now who knows??

  • u cant trust imdb cause half of the stuff on their is shit so why not fuck off

  • All correct except for Christopher Eccleston. His series was not 'shot in 2005'. It aired in 2005, but was filmed in 2004 when he was 40.

  • You are correct. I found the BBC annoucment was dated March 22, 2004.

  • Peter Davison was 29 when he took over as the Doctor. So clearly you don't know alot either

  • Hmm I think the best story from Tom's final era is Meglos. They slipped a bit with the 'cactus' duplicate of the doctor but the music and effects are truly best.

  • Tom made the most of the villain role though, cliched as it was. Romana was great too, and a couple of the guest roles. Entertaining despite the plot problems...mix of good and bad lines in the script.

  • Yup.

    Effects - Good

    Music - Good

    Plot - Bad

    Dialogue - OK

  • my favourite theme.

  • Tom Baker > all

  • The Sean Connery of Doctors......

  • That would be William Hartnell

  • No, TheEqualiser was try to say was that since Sean Connery is considered the best James Bond - that Tom Baker is the Best Doctor.

  • Yeah, I got that straight after I posted the reply LOL

  • Hands down, Tom Baker is the legendary Doctor of them all.

  • Tom Baker, obviously #1 Doctor.

  • I agree with you there, like what that other timelord said at the beginning of his premiere episode Robot: "You'll find his behavior a little, erratic." Tom certainly bought finesses to the role and gave it his best.

  • @raynar01 That Timecrash ep from from 2007 I think it was should've been done w/Tom for so many obvious reasons. Problem is he obviously looks too old now. Oh well.

  • @breaks0 No, it was done because Peter Davison is David Tennant's favourite Doctor, because he grew up watching him. RTD and Steven Moffat both like Peter Davison's Doctor too so it makes sense they chose him. That and the fact Peter Davison's Doctor was massively different from the previous four, not to mention he was the youngest at the time and influenced Tennant's Doctor... plus Tom Baker is too old yeah. lol

  • @Red23791 Fine Red, maybe you're right. I simply don't think if you could chose any you wanted, you'd choose anyone other than Tom (or perhaps Patrick) and knowing how popular Tom is in the UK and stateside, many would share my opinion. Davison always struck me as terribly stodgey, however different in certain respects he may've been. In terms of style, humor, zaniness and various other personality traits, David reminds me much more of Patrick and Tom and evokes their spirit more than Peter's.

  • @Red23791 Just to add, it's all a matter of taste anyway, so I don't think it's worth arguing over. If David and the crew (and fans like you) feel that way, fine. I just have a different view.

  • @breaks0 No I wasn't trying to argue, I was just explaining the reason why they chose Peter Davison.

  • @raynar01 yep him an jon

  • @raynar01 David tennant is the best doctor of his time on the show and tom baker was the best of his time on the show

  • @Shiny6Arceus I agree ^_^

  • @raynar01 You're so right! Tom & Colin Baker are my favorite Doctors!

  • @raynar01 You do realize of course that "legendary" is a descriptive term, not a comparative one.

    You must mean "most legendary".

  • my favorite of all the themes, my favorite doctor too

  • I really like this...

  • Easily my favourite Doctor Who theme tune. I'm more used to seeing it with Davidson. Still, Tom Baker's version is cool.

  • OK Danny Stewart, can you please tell the nations of the world where this is from!!?? Please?

  • It depends when you grew up My mum never liked Who but my dad watched it in the first 3 Doctors (Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee), although he watched it most often during the Pertwee years, so he always thinks of Pertwee as the Doctor.

  • Yes, I may be in the states but I have vivid and sentimental memories of Tom Baker as Dr. Who. I used to watch this series quite a bit as a kid. Great Stuff! :)

  • You ain't put a closing for this one

  • It's basically the same as Davision's, minus the fact that Tom's picture was used instead.

  • Not quite, there were some differences

  • Like what?

  • The stars are either different from the Davison titles, have been altered slightly for the Davison sequence or move in different ways. Look at them both closely and then you'll see what I mean.

  • ah yes, who could forget when the music went disco.

  • OK, where is this from?

  • It's an easter egg on the Leisure Hive DVD methinks.

  • Where? I've got The Leisure Hive DVD and I can only find one easter egg on the disc - Continuity Announcements!

  • . . . as I said in another comment, the video may have been taken from the synthesizing starfields documentary on the Leisure Hive DVD.

  • Or possibly an edit of the 1980 Theme Music Video from the Castrovalva and Four to Doomsday DVDs.

  • No. This video was added before the New Beginnings boxset came out.

  • I believe it's edited from the synthesizing... doc on the Leisure Hive.

  • i like the fourth doctors first theme tune insted of this one.this theme should be just for the 5th & 6th incarnations of the doctor on doctor who the best scifi show in the world .tardis and the doctor rock.....................................

  • Ed Eways opening music for his knock out boxing event this summer in Port Chester NY. Our group hears that he loves DR WHO!!! Tom Baker rocks

  • YES!!! Tom: my FAVOURITE Doctor!!!

  • I heard this on Police, Camera, Action! today and they used it for these people crammed into a 'tardis' car. Great title sequence

  • Tom's photo (on both his title sequences, actually) should have been a "grin" one; that would be much better than the "morose"/worried ones they used.

  • Where do you get these titles from? I'v tried everywhere and I cant find anything! Please reply! I'm gonig mad!

  • Timelord726 like to keep his sources secret...

  • maybe the secret clips added to DVDs so only people on computers can watch them? i have found amny title sequences on these DVDs...

  • this is a reply yo AJDian's reply to tattocaz

  • They can be viewed on normal DVD players, they're just 'hidden'. Try selecting the Doctor Who logo on one of the DVD's menus; that's probably the most common hiding place.

  • hmm... I never seem to be able to acsess them on a DVD player!

  • hmm... I never seem to be able to acsess them on a DVD player!

  • Well, unless they're DVD-ROM content (which they're not; they'd be on the menu but unaccessible with a normal DVD player), they MUST be there somewhere; here's my 'technique' for finding Easter Eggs: basically, on a normal DVD player, press every directional button which, logically, you shouldn't have to press (Up at the top of menus, etc.). This should uncover them.

  • As far as I know, no Doctor Who DVD has been released with this title sequence as an Easter Egg (from quick Googling). So how did the poster get it?

  • I remember being baffled by the new opening titles, (I was about 7 at the time) as I was watching this at a friends house when the first episode of the Leisure Hive was going out!

It lead me to believe different houses got different Doctor Who stories, that is until my late Father pointed out I was being a dickhead when I quizzed him about it!

    Kids ey? hahahahahahaha

  • I love Doctor Who! me and my mum watched it all the time. Although Tom Baker was my favorite Doctor, I do like the new Doctor as well. can't wait for the new episodes.

  • THIS is the version I remembered hearing when I was a kid and after my parents put me to bed. I saw the intro once when I was like 4 or 5 years old and got freaked out by Tom Baker's ugly mug! haha! Great theme song, and great show!

  • old toothy tom's last bow.

  • Bitchin!

  • The rise of the synthesizer in the 80s. It's nice but it's missing the haunting feel the original version had - specifically the 1974 version of the theme

  • the 1974 version is exactly the same as the 1970 version

  • What do you mean by "Original Version?" You referring to the 60s one or the Pertwee/Baker version? Also if you view the other video posted about the creation of this theme, you'll see why they decided to change it up a bit.

  • This theme is so... rock-like!

  • My favourite mix of the theme. Thanks for posting!

  • i dont remember this being on a dvd

  • It's a "hidden" feature on either the Leisure Hive, Keeper of Traken or Logopolis DVDs.

  • It would make sense this would be on Leisure Hive since that was where this intro was first used (and where K9 was killed). I watched it on Netflix's On Demand, so I didn't get a chance to play around and see if it was on there.

  • He wasn't killed. He left in Warrior's gate when he decided to stay with Romana in the tackily-named E-Space

  • Wait... he ran into the water and I don't recall them doing anything to save him. He got electrocuted and Romana went after him and he exploded and she carried him out. You telling me that they repaired K9 after that? I haven't seen any other episodes that took place after the Leisure Hive during the rest of Baker's run (yet)

  • yeah. She took him into the TARDIS and the doctor repaired him after their trip to Argolis. At the beginning of meglos we see the doctor almost finished repairing k-9, but it then turns out that he has developed another fault when he calls the doctor "mistress".

  • What a great time, and very vivid in my memory. Not just for Doctor Who, but most everything else. And it's not a case of time sweetening the memory...I knew at the time how good it was and that it wouldn't last, and left a mental "note to self" to remember it.

If I had a time machine, I'd set the dial for the 80s and never come back...
