That was a Zen Garden. It was used by Zen Buhddists in Japan for meditation and contemplation. The lines in the sand represented the waves of the sea, and the rocks represented islands. The circles around the rocks represented the waves and ripples of the shoreline around the islands. What Zach pulled out of the box was a mini Zen Garden (you can get it at gift stores).
