I find it very difficult to get the worm to move realistically, although experts (like the demonstrator at the vendor) can make them look surprisingly good and natural. You need to stick the base of the string in your pocket and more subtly manipulate the string with your hand, like rolling your hand under the string as the worm seems to crawl over it.
