Just an FYI: You don't need to do anything special. The master server will time out even without the hosts entry. Gamespy still works / lists servers just fine.

hi every1, i have some problems with startin lan game...

i have done everything like in that video but when i get to screen for creating character i get next message:

attempting to find server

connection to server has failed

server is not responding(timed out)

is it problem that i'm using xp instead of 7 or...

i have tried this exactly and it definitely does not work for me. i added nwmaster.bioware.com to my hosts file, but i still couldn't bypass the authentication until i blocked it with kaspersky. then i downloaded tunngle, forwarded the port on my router, got a NWN IP address, set up a LAN game using 11155 as the port number, attempted a direct connection with the IP and port number copy/pasted into the appropriate field, and still, nothing. it told me it couldn't connect to the server.

The hosts thing does not seem to work at all for me. Does the method need to be done on every machine playing, even if one of them is using a legitimate key?

@n3cr0fil3 Only HOST needs to do it, and you got to do it quick! Host quick. Make sure ports are opened. I spent a LOT of time on this game, only to find out the copy I had was a bad rip. Read my story above to find out. - Versatile

@gamedexterity I have two actual copies of the game, I just needed a 3rd for a friend visiting to play. Yeah, we found later after I posted that the person without a legit key needed to host the game, otherwise they get the unauthenticated key error. We got it going, but other errors existed in the game itself. Such as my cleric who for some reason was rolling less than 10hp at level 1 and was not gaining any XP at all :/

@sipasabayag You got to do it quick when in disconnect mode. Luckily you didn't spend 21 hours on this game trying to get it working. It does work, but requires messing around.

So I followed all this to the tee (except I'm using a different VPN client), but when I try to connect with another computer, I'll get the error "Player name was refused by the server" or something like it. Have you guys run into this? Thanks

@gamedexterity Actually someone in tunngle told me, when you get this error. its cuz ur friend didn't join fast enough, we had this issue ourselves. we just did what the guy on tunngle said, which is.. the moment you create the server, have the other player join as fast as ur create it.. i don't know why, but it worked

I run this game on LAN using tunngle, your tutorial was bang on the money. The only problem I ran into (nothing to do with the tutorial) was finding different key codes for each game NWN, SOU, HOTU. I found shit loads of key codes on the web. Now my friends and I play NWN all the time (well. nearly..) Oh yeah I do own the original copies of NWN, SOU, HOTU!! So GO BIOWAE!!

@shadow4561230 On Win XP the host file is Read only. To correct this you need to right click on the file. Then select Properties and uncheck Read-only under Attributes. Now you can write all you want.

@AbissalD : Not doing it fast enough. When I say hate Bioware games, I think you feel my frustration. I don't know how much time you spent on this already, but I spent at least 10 hours to figure out all the ins and outs of making this game work.

I don't know if you are using tunngle, or hamachi. Blocking in the host file is a good first step. Make sure the keys are different between both PCs. Talk to "StuartTheGamerNerd" as he got this game to work recently. -Versatile

@AbissalD : I almost forgot. Have one person sit at the LAN screen, and the VERY MOMENT the server is up JOIN RIGHT AWAY. If you join fast enough, you will beat the CD KEY authentication algorithm. -Versatile

@gamedexterity, well it looks like the cd-keys need to be different. Because when someone was joining a game, the game starts to tell that your cd-key is invalid. But the funny thing is that the keys were different from the start. Apparently there is some kind of messed up patch or something.

@gamedexterity Anyway, if someone needs to change the cd-key (it helped me), then you need edit nwncdkey.ini (it is in the game folder).

@gamedexterity ISO's ftw! your diffenatly right there...funny though...i am still having the same problem....I installed The Diamond edition of neverwinter nights myself but even when I edit the host file on both my desktop PC and the laptop to where you can login with a random username and password....either of them still cannot connect to the server I host on my desktop or even if the laptop hosts..either way it will say "your player name was rejected by the server" and then goes on to say...

@gamedexterity it goes on to say something about "your cd key is in use, please wait 5 minutes" which if corse i'm shore that doesn't work and I a make shore that both computer are using different sets of cd keys that the 3 cd keys it takes to play the game..perhaps I actually need to find 3 cd keys for one diamond edition of the game and another from platinum so that I can tell for shore that I have one for the original and both expansions and not using 2 or 3 from the original??

@StuartTheGamerNerd : This is not correct at all. You edited the host file so you are able to get to the lan portion and host a game? When you host, you need the laptop or vice versa to join right away. If you wait too long, you invoke the cd-key authentication system. -Versatile

@gamedexterity THANK YOU THANK YOUUUU!!..your method worked!!...I have my friend in my house wait at the lan servers section and get em to click on and join my server immediately after I have started the server and IT WORKED!....... now the only problem left is...how am I going to get people from hamachi to join it!!?....tell them something like "ok when I say go count down from 30 sec. and double click my server!".....perhaps that will work??? :D

@StuartTheGamerNerd : Of course it worked. I spent 10+ hours that week on this game. Hamachi is same idea as me sitting in tunngle. When I say and use tunngle, pretend I am using hamachi. Enough said. - Versatile
