Hi i live in the uk and have got hooked on your video's they are great!! i use mica powders in papercrafting so when i have a go at making soap can i use these to add colour?
@TheLyndylou22 You need to make sure all of the ingredients you use are cosmetic grade and skin safe. Most crafting supplies are not, but you could double check with the manufacturer. Happy Soaping!
@lolitacakes Yes, you can use those to color soap. You may need to use a little more because they add other things to the mica to make it stick to your skin and apply smoothly. They might also fade or bleed depending on what type of colorant they have in them. But other than that - they should work well!
So why should we use lab colours if they mix badly? How about if i dont have any non-bleeding colours, i only have food colours and i want to do many layers of them? What should i do and is there any solutions???
@Mimiopampam LabColors are available in a wide variety of colors and they only speckle if you mix them incorrectly. That's why I show you how to do it correct in this video. You can do layers with bleeding colors like food colors and LabColors - just know that the colors will start to blend together after time.
@soapqueentv Thank you for replying all of my questions in different episodes.....Im waiting for other videos from you, do u know when you will upload anoher video idea?
@EarlyBirdie82 Rubbing alcohol is the easiest to use and has the least effect on the final soap. But you can also use liquid glycerin or oil or water depending on whether the colorant you are working with is oil or water soluble.
Awesome video! Question, I have played with Black Oxide and Blue Ultramarine and they stained the washcloths in my experiments. Can you give approximate measurements for the amount of alcohol to scoop ratio you use?
@Mistirose14 It sounds like you added too much color to your soap. It doesn't really matter how much alcohol you use to get your pigment to an easy to mix in consistency. Just add the color in small amounts until you get the color you like. And remember, if you are starting with a white soap base you will not be able to get a deep dark color. Hope this helps!
Is there a way to prevent white soaps to turn into a "pastel" color when we color it? I hate how sometimes, I want a color to look vivid; but it looks so creamy instead. BTW< awesome video.
@Jennifer2k89 Yes! as I demonstrate in this video it is all about which base you use. So if you start with a white base you will get a pastel color and if you want a deep, vibrant color you need to start with a clear base.
Hello! I love your channel :) I am creating organic soaps, and wondered what i could use to colour my soap. Can i use oxides, ultramarines and micas, are these all organic???
@tomas210788 Many people consider oxides and ultramarines to be all natural - but they are made in a lab. They are identically made to what is naturally found except without all of the bad stuff like lead and arsenic (which is also natural!). If you truly want all natural, organic color, I would use herbs like Calendula, Alkanet, Annatto and Spirulina. Have fun!
This sounds like a bit of a dumb question but you know how you said that micas are used in eyeshadows, do you think you can you eyeshadow pigments in soap??
@cutegirl169 Not a dumb question at all - that's a really good one! Powdered eye shadows should work for coloring soap. You will probably need to use more - since eyeshadow has other things added it to it and isn't just pure color like mica is. I would make one little test bar first just to be sure it will mix in nicely with your soap.
@ojobean76 All the supplies I use can be purchased online at Bramble Berry - find the link in the video description. But you can also often find natural dried herbs at your local organic grocery store.
@Dokiineel Yes, I mention that food colors are fine to use at 1:52 in this video. Many food colors are more diluted than soap colors - so your colors won't be as bright. But that's really the only downside to using food colors!
I've noticed that there are lavender buds in some soaps too but Im assuming that they don't brown after a week? Are there any types of lavender that I could put in the soap that wouldn't go bad? I'm kind of want to do a lavender and oatmeal soap -- think it would stand?
Thanks for your time soap queen! I want to make soaps as wedding favors.
I've made many soaps now over the last month & actually have friends buying some from me! (I've given most as gifts but some are special ordering ones.) But what I'm wondering is would I have to get involved w/the FDA at all at this point? I've been looking around on google & have a Soap Making for Dummies & they are saying that since this is something that goes on skin, you have to list EVERY single ingredient. So not just Shea Butter but ALL the ingredients in it. Is this true? Anyone know
@momzmoviez Although some types of soaps are exempt from having to list ingredients most need to follow the current FDA guidelines. The FDA website is pretty difficult to understand - but Bramble Berry sells a book called 'Soap and Cosmetic Labeling' that explains all of the rules for labeling.
But yes, you do need to list every ingredient in your soap. That's why Bramble Berry has the ingredients for each of our bases right in the description. So you have that info anytime you need it!
I love your videos they're very informative. I also like that you let us know the cons of each thing that you're doing. In one video as well you mentioned that not only are the supplies available in Brambleberry (sp?) but that they're available in other craft stores as well-- goes to show that youre here to inform, not make a buck. Thank you for being so honest! :
@EnlightendBeauty Yes, as well as any powdered additive like clays or natural colorants that can clump are really helped by the rubbing alcohol trick too!
In this you state that what you add in your sop that was once live will eventually turn brown. Are jojoba beads considered live? Also will these beads be ok in a shaving soap? Thanks
Hi! Jojoba is not one of the additives I would consider live. Jojoba beads are a processed oil that have been colored and formed into beads. By live additives, I mean things like plants, flowers, herbs or fruits that haven't been extracted or processed other than drying.
loved the video but I wanted the hear more about the herbs and different the herbs that can be used. Maybe u can make a video just about herbs in soap. thanks
The reason the colors don't transfer onto your skin like eye shadow is that you put alot less in soap than if you were applying it directly to your skin as a cosmetic. If you put a whole bunch of color in your soap the lather will turn colors and you can even color your hands.
Great video series! As someone brand new to making soap, (although I work at a soap oil company as you can see)... watching the processes instead of just reading about them REALLY helps takes the mystery out of soap making.
Soap Queen has a shop on Spreadshirt with that very apron for sale. I'll send you the exact link in a direct message since I can't post URLs in comments.
Hi Jeneen,
I did make a couple of professionally produced DVD's a couple of years ago. You can find them on the Bramble Berry website under the books category.
Is it the Teach Soap forum you're having difficulties with? Email me your username and I'll look into it!
Thanks for all the compliments - I'm so thrilled to hear you are enjoying Soap Queen TV. We're working really hard on them and can't wait to show you more!
Alexandra,
The best way to keep herbs from going brown is to not get them saturated in the soap base. Keep them dry by sprinkling on top - you've probably seen CP soap bars using this technique. Sounds like we need to do some more in-depth projects about this though!
Anne-Marie thank you so much for your soap queen tv. I learn so much more by watching and then applying than reading (rolls eyes) sometimes that is so irrating!
I also love the hyperboard and I have registered but haven't been able to get on, that was 3 days ago.
I was wondering if you had any Video's for sale on doing Melt & Pours or are you considering doing that. By the way Love WA. Seattle is my Favorite City in US. Thanks again for Soap queen tv Can't wait for upcomming shows :)
I've ground up the lavender before adding to the soap and like it a lot better than leaving them whole. I used a blender that grounds wheat into flour, not a regular blender.
I want to know how we can get a soap queen tv apron!
Hey Anne-Marie, great video!!!! this was needed for those of us that are venturing into the world of soapmaking.
I have a question, is there anything that can be done for the herbs to have a longer life in the soap? and will the same happen in CP soap?
I LOVE BRAMBLEBERRY BY THE WAY!!!!!!!! FOR THOSE OF YOU OUT THERE, IF YOU HAVE NOT TRIED THEM I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THEM!! GREAT COMPANY, GREAT PRODUCTS!!!!!!
It's completely safe to use food coloring in soap. Pretty much anything that you can eat is safe to use. The main issue with food colors is that they bleed like the Labcolors do - so not great for multi-color soaps.
What's the difference with white and clear soap base? And please, could you let us see how you made the wale soap, and the flower? I LOVE IT !
BeautyproofNL 3 hours ago
If you have glycrine and food color can you mix them and then will it bleed????
