there are still a lot of pastiches of Korngold's style in recent film scores, e.g. Randy Quaid's motif in Independence Day, etc. Even Goldsmith wrote the main theme to Wind and the Lion using that very elaborate style. It seems that most composers want to get at least one chance to write like this. Williams and Lucas both agreed that Korngold's approach would work for Star Wars.
There is an immeasurable loss when you loose the potential for new beauty. We still have the satisfaction of enjoying this beautiful score, but...would that it's creator were still present.
@hlaltimus Erich Korngold is still around, in a way. His few, but superb, Hollywood scores have influenced succeeding movie composers to this day. Nonetheless, if he was still around, he'd be 113 and possibly a little bit cranky.
@errolfan John Williams is possibly the only modern composer who can match the talents of Korngold, Max Steiner, and the other great movie music composers. You can aftually here snippets of this and other Korngold scores at Disneys Hollywood Studios-they play old movie music as background noise throughoiut the park, so I guess this does Live on.
It's interesting how much special effects have improved since the 1930s... there's no comparison.
But... the quality of the music scores hasn't improved in the least.
I'm not saying that modern scores are bad, but it's just that the film studio's perfected the score wayyyy back in the early years. This Korngold score is proof of it.
Outstanding!

Modern recording with a very good still shot of the best scene of the movie.... Heaven, I'm in Heaven (Sorry, that's Fred Astaire).
