thanks so so much, have been looking for this for a long long time! stunningly evocative of a certain mid-eighties blissful innocence and wistfulness, which probably only exists in my memory/imagination! thanks again
@danbo1984 No, you are wrong, it was a beautiful time mid-80's. I still have this record, bought on a whim as I usually did, not having too much access to info in those days. This album got a lot of play, even with my LSD riddled brain and much different tastes. I'm glad to hear it again. Louise
@louisebakalik I'm not sure it really was such a beautiful time it just happened to be a hell of a lot better than these dreadful times even allowing for Thatcher! Music was largely poor after '82. Hope in a darkened heart wasn't a particularly great album, although the good tracks were really good and I still enjoy listening to them to this day. This was a particular gem though. Good luck with your LSD recovery. God knows we need it!
I personally feel that this is one of Sylvian's best ever vocal performances and that the two voices complement each other superbly. Much like the Durutti Column and Cocteau Twins, it invites you to luxuriate in its beautiful melancholia.
What a surprise to find this on YouTube. I lost the record years ago somehow and had forgotten all about it. Brings back memories... always was a great admirer of Sakamoto and Sylvian. Thanks for posting!
Is this music based on Elizabethan poetry and/or Church music? Sure sounds like it with new synth arrangement by Ryuichi.~~~Charles Lancelot Boole, Cambridgeshire,England
I've heard she's working in a tools shop somewhere in England...She sells screwdriver and nails...unbelieveble! One of the sweetest voice I've ever heard in my 50 years of life...
@ludwig6660 Do you have any more information as to where in the UK she's located? Would be nice to buy some nuts ands bolts from one of my favorite voices!
This has always been special, and more than 10 years later I'm being David and using it as a means of comforting my little 2 year old, no easy feat, but it's worked! seriously, the soul and emotion displayed here are almost painful in their beauty.
What lovely sentiment. My children have grown up now, but I can remember my daughter sleeping in my arms to this almost effortless song. How I wish this time was here again.
I think its the difference in tone that makes this song work. David's voice is deep and worldly, Virginia's is innocent and ethereral. What is the hope for the world? Innocence or experience? I love this song.
This and Linoleum are my 2 favorite songs to hear David Sylvian's buttery rich tone - especially when he does the higher harmony at the end (Far Away/Time Will Pass)
as far as i've found out, this album is not sold on cd or on itunes which is really rough for me because i love it so! i played the album 'thread bare' when i owned it years ago. thank you for uploading!
Actually this is the one track on the album (which in itself is great!) i skip most of the time. I just don't think David Sylvian's voice is working here...
I don't think its Davids voice isn't working on the song - I just think theres probably a clash of styles. Particularly when they're singing together and the vocals go quite high.David has a warm, rich, deep and soft tone and his vocals tend to get 'drowned out' a little.I must confess it sounds like a christmas song. Can imagine listening to it whilst at the window when the snow is falling.Really quite like it.Certainly different from Mr Batts norm...and yes it has Ryuichi written all over it.
Hmm hearing that it reminds you of xmas...it really reminds me of springtime or summer, but with overcast skies (I always seem to picture made up music videos in my head). I've just checked my Last fm. I listened to this song 25 times in the past 2 days :|
I always thought this was beautiful still have the 7 inch thank God, thanks for putting it on You Tube, it should be heard its so beautiful

This reminds me of school lunches. It's not exactly what I expect from Sylvian.

A sentimental and sublime song..brings back trippy memories of the mid '80's .
I loved her as much as Cocteau Twins..DCD or anyone else on the 4AD label .
It is a shame her output was few and far between .
She has a vinyl album entitled ' Promise Nothing ' which is another rarity..
This CD was available at one time from Germany..I had it .
Thanx for the great memories and vibes !
