  • I always thought this was beautiful still have the 7 inch thank God, thanks for putting it on You Tube, it should be heard its so beautiful

  • If you look away really quickly or look at this from the corner of your eye... I swear to God, she opens her eyes...

  • Virginia Astley is a female version of Jon Anderson. Her voice is angelic.

  • @Chriskkboongg Jon Anderson is the female version of Jon Anderson!

  • I got a vinyl copy from back in the day......still have it!

  • This is weird. Vaguely hymnological, not unpleasant but weird.

  • Thanks for posting this, I lost my copy! (:

  • This reminds me of school lunches. It's not exactly what I expect from Sylvian.

  • an unheralded classic, which perfectly married the unique talents of astley, sylvian and sakamoto. marvellous.

  • i have this on vinyl! the album!

  • thanks so so much, have been looking for this for a long long time! stunningly evocative of a certain mid-eighties blissful innocence and wistfulness, which probably only exists in my memory/imagination! thanks again

  • @danbo1984 No, you are wrong, it was a beautiful time mid-80's. I still have this record, bought on a whim as I usually did, not having too much access to info in those days. This album got a lot of play, even with my LSD riddled brain and much different tastes. I'm glad to hear it again. Louise

  • @louisebakalik I'm not sure it really was such a beautiful time it just happened to be a hell of a lot better than these dreadful times even allowing for Thatcher! Music was largely poor after '82. Hope in a darkened heart wasn't a particularly great album, although the good tracks were really good and I still enjoy listening to them to this day. This was a particular gem though. Good luck with your LSD recovery. God knows we need it!

  • I personally feel that this is one of Sylvian's best ever vocal performances and that the two voices complement each other superbly. Much like the Durutti Column and Cocteau Twins, it invites you to luxuriate in its beautiful melancholia.

  • I have this album on vinyl...I LOVE this album. Such haunting melodies...nice post

  • A sentimental and sublime song..brings back trippy memories of the mid '80's .

I loved her as much as Cocteau Twins..DCD or anyone else on the 4AD label .

It is a shame her output was few and far between .

She has a vinyl album entitled ' Promise Nothing ' which is another rarity..

This CD was available at one time from Germany..I had it .

Thanx for the great memories and vibes !

  • What a surprise to find this on YouTube. I lost the record years ago somehow and had forgotten all about it. Brings back memories... always was a great admirer of Sakamoto and Sylvian. Thanks for posting!

  • красиво!

  • 天使の歌声

  • besitze eine cd-aufnahme, kopien sind für fans selbstverständlich.

"blue of noon" ist auch als cd-aufnahme vorhanden.

  • Produced by 坂本龍一 だっけ?

  • Heaven on a platter.

  • Is this music based on Elizabethan poetry and/or Church music? Sure sounds like it with new synth arrangement by Ryuichi.~~~Charles Lancelot Boole, Cambridgeshire,England

  • i still have this LP ...is great

but what happened to her.?? she's dissapeared...

  • I've heard she's working in a tools shop somewhere in England...She sells screwdriver and nails...unbelieveble! One of the sweetest voice I've ever heard in my 50 years of life...

  • @ludwig6660 Do you have any more information as to where in the UK she's located? Would be nice to buy some nuts ands bolts from one of my favorite voices!

  • Thank you for the upload!!!

I could not hear this melody for a long time.

I'm very happy, thank you so much.

  • Never heard this, simply beatifull, who wrote the music? It remind me Sakamoto.

  • @EFODERFIX

Album total produced by Ryuichi Sakamoto

This song written by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Virginia Astley

  • thank you so much for the for info.

  • @EFODERFIX Sakamoto did in fact write the music.

  • やっとみつけた!!!

  • =(( Beautiful song, beautiful voices!

  • Unforgettable? What was it again?

  • Hope in a darkened heart has always been 1 of my fave albums, cost me a fortune on ebay to get it on cd!!

what a voice! what brilliant music by sakamoto too!

tree top club is still one of my faves!

i wish Virginia astley would do more stuff or even better - go on tour & do all this album!!!

  • I LOVE this UNFORGETTABLE song!

  • I still have this album on vinyl!

  • So beautiful. "Hope in a Darkened Heart" did so much for me when I was down.

  • Another of her albums that is well worth checking out is 'Horsey, horsey don't you stop.'

  • Check out the Virginia Astley albums 'From Gardens Where We Feel Secure' and "Put Some Oil On Those Hinges mother." Both are exceptional.

  • very 80s, fantastic.

  • Wow! I have never heard this - thank you so much - what a beauty ;)

  • This has always been special, and more than 10 years later I'm being David and using it as a means of comforting my little 2 year old, no easy feat, but it's worked! seriously, the soul and emotion displayed here are almost painful in their beauty.

  • What lovely sentiment. My children have grown up now, but I can remember my daughter sleeping in my arms to this almost effortless song. How I wish this time was here again.

  • These lyrics describe my entire life

  • Beautiful song! It was beautiful the first day I heard it 20 years ago, and it still is. Thank you!

  • beautiful song, i love you virginia ashley, and sylvian and mr ryuchi very especial....

  • One of my all time favourite songs.

    Wonderful.

  • I used this song for my wedding ceremony.

Lyric is a little negative. But I have a good old memory.

  • Actually no, it is a positive thing. As your small hope came true. : )

  • This song was one of the most beautiful songs of my youth.

  • magnifique!

  • I was join this session as a programmer 20 years ago. This song was

composed the day before David Sylvian recorded his vocal at the WoolHall

Studio at Bath in England. It is still beautiful song. Ryuichi was prove

himself as a very talented man.

  • it may sound wanky but its a late September song for me and i love both there voices

  • Sounds like church music. And I love Sylvian.

  • Steve Kilbey would disagree ;)

  • thrilling...

    beautiful...

what else can you ask for?

  • the whole album is brilliant. one of the few treasures on vinyl, wich only my girlfriend is allowed to touch ;o)

  • I think its the difference in tone that makes this song work. David's voice is deep and worldly, Virginia's is innocent and ethereral. What is the hope for the world? Innocence or experience? I love this song.

  • I agree. Last bit sends tingles. Voices work well on the LP rather than pc speakers etc.

  • i concur 100%

This and Linoleum are my 2 favorite songs to hear David Sylvian's buttery rich tone - especially when he does the higher harmony at the end (Far Away/Time Will Pass)

  • if you dont think thats david then your not a fan

  • I need this album!

  • Actually...I need this on 7"

  • as far as i've found out, this album is not sold on cd or on itunes which is really rough for me because i love it so! i played the album 'thread bare' when i owned it years ago. thank you for uploading!

  • It is available on a Japanese CD. I found a copy of E-bay a few years ago.

  • I have a copy you can have it you want

  • if it's not on cd or Itunes, then you might aswel get it off soulseek or limewire. they can't blame you for it really.

  • Actually this is the one track on the album (which in itself is great!) i skip most of the time. I just don't think David Sylvian's voice is working here...

  • I don't think its Davids voice isn't working on the song - I just think theres probably a clash of styles. Particularly when they're singing together and the vocals go quite high.David has a warm, rich, deep and soft tone and his vocals tend to get 'drowned out' a little.I must confess it sounds like a christmas song. Can imagine listening to it whilst at the window when the snow is falling.Really quite like it.Certainly different from Mr Batts norm...and yes it has Ryuichi written all over it.

  • Hmm hearing that it reminds you of xmas...it really reminds me of springtime or summer, but with overcast skies (I always seem to picture made up music videos in my head). I've just checked my Last fm. I listened to this song 25 times in the past 2 days :|

  • yep. not necessarily a christmas song, but definately a winter song to me. sitting in the warm house on a day off, watching the snow outside etc etc.

  • Of course! I'm sitting in a warm house at 1am, just outside stinking-hot Sydney. Does this count?

  • 1of my most played albums! what a combination too - VA, Sylvian & Sakamoto! No wonder it's a classic!

  • yeah, you can hear Sakamoto's work all over this! :-)
