beacuse you dont do this.. tell your dad the laser needs to be replaced ..ive done computer repair for six years and hack and mod consoles for fun on the side.. rubbing alcohol 70% q-tip rub softly to clean laser if dose that dose not work !!!!!!!!!!!!!CHANGE THE LASER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cubby ps2 often use the KHS-400B model laser slims use PVR-802 if not make sure the one you get look like the one you already have.. @papatoony I have the opposite problem! It won't play my PSX games. The problem is that it has 2 readers, a PS2 and PSX. One is broken in both of ours. If we lived near each other, I would suggest a trade of the readers, but that's unlikely.

good tip there are ajustments under the laser take the laser eye out and there are 2 ajustments turn them both to the right and then put it back together and it should work again

Ok after looking at many many ways to fix it, i did as this says, i cleaned the lense with a Q-tip an made sure no dust was in. i marked the gear an turned it 2 to the left,

put the cover back on an turned it on before i put the game in i turned on the diagnositcs or however you spell it then opened the tray put the game in an it worked. tried reseting it just to make sure an it worked. now both my ps2's work thank you!

Thanks for this video. It turned out that I only needed to clean the lens and my PS2 was good to go! It now reads PS1, PS2, Audio CDs, and DVDs with no problems!

I only had a read error on a few titles and color of the disc didnt seem to make any difference so was unsure if I needed this tweak or not.

I decided to give it a go however and there are plenty of "how to" guides on this subject but this one worked for me - 2 clicks to the right was all it needed ;)

Thanks for showing how to open it up properly . . . could been a bit more detailed... as I opened mine up to find that i had to be careful to keep the lid attached the the main body as it was attached by a thin metal cable to turn it on ... This really worked but all I had to do was open it up and clean the lense with a cotton bud and blow away the dust and it worked... I did not need to move the gear or use rubbing alcohol as other people suggest... hope this helps someone else

Repairing PS2s is difficult. Yours may not have been anywhere near as easy to fix as shown here. It's a lot of work and may not help things at all.

I could also be because the laser assembly can't move. look at 1:11 on the left side there is a piece of plastic next to the laser that goes onto the bar. this can get dirty/damaged so the laser can't be moved. try to clean the bar and plastic piece. if necessary carefully bend the plastic down so it makes better contact with the bar. if the video doesn't help this might.

OK!! i kno the perfect way u need a air compressor though or somthing tht releases air at high speeds like a fan or somthing. Unscrew the screws at bottom .. u will see the eye on the middle right if u got a small enough screwdriver unscrew the wall around it.. and use the air compressor on it keep it on it for 3-4mins rescrew all of the screws and try it

Yes. The white gear moves the lens. Try moving it to the left to lower the lens till it reads the disc without scraping it.

Unlikely. It's likely the disc that is the problem, but if the problem persists with multiple discs then a good adjustment or lens cleaning may do some good.

OK, I put the disc cover back on to test a game and it was making sounds like the disc was scraping on something. The white thing in the middle of the cover was loose, so I thought that might be it and snapped it back in place, I even put the lens down to its lowest possible position and it's still making scraping noises and not reading discs. The cover isn't on very tight, what the hell is going on?
