My aunt told me to look this up and originally I was looking up fantasy paintings for inspiration for my artwork. These look alot like the creatures Brian Froud draws! When they appear to morph in nature, is this only a reflection of there world? Or is this them physically?
You are more likely to captue nature spirits in areas which are wild and untouched rather than cultivated and cropped. In one wide shot of a river with plants, bushes and trees beside it you can see several. We are never alone in nature. They know we are there and observe us.
Yes they are real but don't be afraid. It's just the incredible beauty of life.

perhaps it isn't so much that nature spirits "hide" as they are so attuned with life and nature they just don't stick out like we do. Hmm?
