Wow. This looks like crap. Isn't the Tempest considered A COMEDY? And I've always abhored female Ariels...Plus, you are going to inevitably hate the shit out of Prospero because his magical "slaves" are black! THAT'S TOO LITERAL. Propspero will only come off as an ass-hole slave driver who beats on Caliban, and refuses Ariel her freedom until the work is done. Ariel LIKES Prospero...and Caliban was evil! This is the point! AND COMEDY COMEDY COMEDY!!! WHERE?!
@CochroachKappa The Tempest is a romance, not a comedy. Along with The Winter's Tale and Pericles it was one of the last batch of plays he wrote where he was striving to find a new genre storytelling that wasn't so pidgeonholed as either the traditional comedy or the traditional tragedy.
That being said, after watching this trailer I think there's gonna be comedy enough to go around without anyone actually trying for it.
@CochroachKappa i agree with u on everything but the "female ariel" bit. when was the last time you met a guy named Ariel? how about never? although thats my only critiscism i agree with you on every other count
@savetheplanet898 Well, it was an old name, XD. The only reason we tend to associate the name "Ariel" with femininity is because the Little Mermaid has made a lasting impression on society, unbewittingly. But, thank you for siding with me! :D
@CochroachKappa Actually, I saw this recently. Ariel is a male. The female character that I also thought was Ariel is actually his mother, a Voodoo Preistess. It serves a backstory in the beginning of the film to how Prospero learned his art.
God, this does look awful. There has never been a good use of CGI, and there never will be. As for any resemblance to Shakespeare, forget it. Anyone who knows the play knows that it is a relatively benign construction, with none of the violence and brutality suggested in this trailer. I was looking for a trailer of Paul Mazursky's imaginative interpretation of the play (which almost no one saw) and came up with this garbage. Poor Peter Fonda!
Shakespeare with the Shakespeare taken out is always so disapointing. I hope the Julie Taymour version with Helen Mirren and Russell Brand will be better....
I really want to see this. A couple months ago I was in Shakespeare's The Tempest here at my school (played two small roles) so I've gotten kind of attached to the story =)
Haha, as you can tell though, it's nothing like Shakespeare's work. Looks very interesting though. I recently played Caliban, so I also have a soft spot for this show.

@NJHellberg Well, you have a point about the romance. It's a romantic comedy. My point was merely that it's not meant to be a tragedy or drama....

@savetheplanet898 I went to school with a boy named Ariel, and I was born in the early 90s.

@savetheplanet898 Well, there was a well-known chess player named Ariel Mengarini, but that was years back...

@CochroachKappa i think its a romance. plus you might take comedy too literal. its definitely a dark play at times. but this is ridiculous

@jotto3391 My bad... What I meant was "tragicomedy", but I obviously forgot that when I posted my first comment... :/

@CochroachKappa Wow, that's a pretty terrible reading of the play. But, yes, this looks terrible also.
