I love Russia. It's so sad that I've had the chance to visit almost the entire Europe, but missed this extraordinary country. I've made a promise to myself to get there as soon as possible!
I want to go to St. Petersburg so bad. too bad i have no money. i heave heard that as a city its one of the best. I live in new york and I'm mexican american so if i go will i get discriminated? I just don't know what its like over there so yeah.

@schagris Turkey is not Byzantium, its like saying St Petersburg is Finland. Turkey is on the territory of what used to be Anatolia and Byzantium was Second Rome and yest currently Turkey is located where Byzantium was and Istanbul is where Constantinople once stood but it does not make it Turkish. Russia did not fight with Constantinople it fought with Ottoman Empire when the capital was Istanbul or Stanbul as the Russians called it. Back to reading for you, mate

@schagris Actually Russia never fought for Constantinople, if you are talking about the military operations in Crimea mostly, then it was not for Constantinople but against Ottoman Empire for the lands on this side of the Black Sea. There were several conflicts but only one war, the one during Catherine the great reign. Russia was more than comfortable with being the Third Rome. Several books explain it in detail, one is Kluchevski lectures. Regards

I think Andron3 is trying to tell you that Byzantium was a city established by an ancient Greeks in the same place that later became Constantinople, the center of Roman Empire. Only later the Turks capture the city. Therefore, the culture of the Greek-speaking Byzantium has nothing to do with contemporary Turkey.

They did not speak Greek there they used Greek for religion as the gospels were written in greek. I was in St Petersburg in 1999. I loved every minute I was there. Somuch was falling apart. I'd love to see it now that they fixed and cleaned up everything for the 300th in 2003. Beautiful city.

Yes it was misguided, yes it was not what the revolution should have become, but that is the way history turned, and the whites were strangling Russia through their involvement in WW1 and their suppression of the revolution.
I am glad that this beautiful city has once again been given its historic name of "St. Petersburg." For decades it was called Leningrad, a bland name that conjures up images of those bleak housing projects that sprang up all across the Soviet Union under Communist rule.

Byzantium is an old empire, which was mainly Greek. They had controll of the Balkan Peninsulla, along with a part of Egypt and Constantinopole.
