interesting question that arises from this prison. Should we enforce punishment and have dysfunctional ex-cons afterwards or should we have almost no punishment and produce functional ex-cons?
Putting people in dark cells full of violence does not help anybody. You have to do everything to make good, peacefull, hardworking and intelligent men out of former criminals. The taxpayers in the US for instance pay tons more than in austria. Just look up the costs.
We have one of the lowest crime rates. In some states of the US they spend more for prisons than schools. Reintegration will never work in horrible prisons
This video is only showing you the "fun" side of this prison. My cousin was working in the laundary department while he was at the Leoben prison and then after working there with good behavior he got transfered into the wood shop where he was able to learn new techniques working with wood. on the side he was also doing some pottery. everything made at this prison is later sold and funds go towards charities to provent youth criminalization.
Don't be deceived by everything you see in this video
they need to bring back prison labour. even if its just pointless shit out in the middle of nowhere. have them break rocks all day in the desert and feed them just enough.
actually my cousin just got out of this jail in vienna. He never worked a day in his life and was a drugy before. in this prison he learned wood works and pottery. now that he is out of prison he has a job and started a new life. Austria thinks for the future not for the moment.
well thats nice but the reality is that most criminals are repeat offenders, damaged goods who will always revert back to there old ways. i know. i've been to prison in new zealand. i changed also but most dont.
But maybe this new prison system of treating prisoners like humans and not animals will work. I guess we will see some study in the near future to see how many of them actually got rehabilitated into society after being released from Leoben.
yes. hopefully. it human nature to want to punish cruely those who break the rules that the rest of us have to follow. but as you say perhaps thats not the answer.
you say to treat these people as humans... yet isnt it human to work and contribute? working, even in prison labour, would give great physical exercise, and a sence of achievement. what is far more in human and more like animal treatment is keeping them couped up all day in cells. prisoners that are exhausted after a hard days work putting their feet up in their bed and drinking a cold water, would not be likely to be as violent as a bored stir crazy guy who hasnt been outside in years.
@AustrianAtheist well i figure someone who gas been nothing but a burden to society, leaching off of hard working taxpayers dollars, and living a life of crime, might as well build some roads for free at shotgun point while they're doing there time. and then when they come out, they can be a road worker.
Forced labour is against human rights and would only increase the anger/sadness of the former criminals. This would increase the costs not reduce them. Giving them the opportunity to work (for money) and study in prison is a lot better.
I understand your wish for revenge, but it destroys society.
@AustrianAtheist who decides what human rights are right and wrong? that varies from country to country so you cant just pull out the rule book that YOUR authorties have decided on.
hard work is good for the soul. most of these guys would be done alot of good to break a sweat once and a while. its healthy. it is cruel to not allow outdoor work if you ask me.
I was not referring to the government, but the Article 4 of the European Human Rights Convention, which says that forced labour is againt human rights.
Hard labour cannot be achieved by forcing persons to do something. There will be no motiviation. You have to adress the motivation of the other person. You are one of us. We support you and when you want to, you can come back, with a good education and manage your life. Study like you never did before, it is your last chance.
@AustrianAtheist yes. and europe is just one continent. you think they have the same rules in america? africa? asia? middle east? anywhere else in this world we live in? no. the men and women who make up the elected officials who make these decicsions, are government. they are governing the human rights. understand.
What are you talking about? The ECHR, the European Convention on Human Rights is ratified in nearly all states of Europe. Read Art 4 Abs. 1:
Labour done as a normal part of imprisonment is allowed, but not when it has to be qualified as forced labour. So there are legal problems. The European court on HR is quite strict on that one....
@AustrianAtheist how is anything i said above in opposition to what you just wrote.
your clearly just desperate to prove your specific knowledge of this bill of rights.
i will repeat myself here you idiot. europe is but one small part of the world. just because the european human rights convention says something does not make it gospel for the whole planet. dont be so self righteous would be a good idea for you to question the rules set by the authorities in your corner of the world sometimes
It is not the gospel for the whole planet, but European states that force their people to work, will face hard consequences. However, I think Europe is far more advanced in that area than any other region. USA: death penalty, guantanamo, crazy punishment, China: up to 4000 death penalties/year, Russia: horrible prisons,
With a good wellfare state and an intelligent criminality policy, zero criminality is possible and will be achieved soon
@AustrianAtheist chinas death penalty rates are high due to their massive over population. tey simply have no room for the criminal element in their society. perhaps in countries likie austria the population is at a prime level for a healthy society... i dont know. nobody really does. if you think a society with zero crime is possible you are very deluded
@AustrianAtheist another thing, refering to your statement before, your last line was study like you never did before, it is your last chance. you meant this as the intent of the authorities towards the offenders. so............ if its their last chance... then what happens when they repeat offend? is it really their last chance? most of the offenders in these institutions are repeat offenders. do you have any idea what you are talking about? these guys dont care about anything
You are simply wrong, The majority of the guys at Leoben are not a repeat offenders. Don't paint the devil out of these people, when you are not even informed. When using diversion, only a tiny minority falls back to criminality. When putting people into prisons, in Austria it is less than 20% (wich is very good, compared to other states) So hard punishment simply fails. we have clear data. "These guys don't care about anything" -> have you ever seen one of them having the chance?
Rest assured; this is a state run prison, paid for with tax money.
No private business would fork out this rediculous amount of money on a building meant to punish and rehabilitate criminals.
(I agree with the idea of making prisoners into citizens before they are released, but who the hell would hire an expensive decorator to fancy up a prison?)
I felt like this was the tour of an apartment. If I was Austrian I would be pissed, the prisoners probably robbed some citizens house and gets time and has amenities like a mountain view, exercise room, karaoke,a furnished apartment and a court. The Correctional Officer reminded me of my real estate agent and the prisoners sounded like the ppl in the apartment building who tell you how nice it is to live there. I wonder what kind of crime does one have to commit to stay in such a lavish home.
this kind of "experimental prison facility" has been done in other countries. it's usually reserved for high profile and low risk offenders ("political" prisoners, white collar offenders...), but in the end, it's a panoticon, like any other....
Wonder why EU is in financial crisis? I am not an Austrian taxpayer, but I paid $150 euros per night for less hospitality than this.
