I won't deny that a good swath of people can be tricked into allowing government to have powers it should not generally have but we have numerous safeguards, checks and balances, in place that make it very difficult for any such people to remain in power for too long. Always, there is the question of how quickly such abuse will become apparent and how long it will take to recover but, it's a fact of nature, that every "body" gets sick.
