@ArpeggioFelatio you dont do rolled note arpeggios, rearrange them: parts where you would normally roll can be rearranged with string skipping. You sound the notes by hammering down individual fingers of your fret hand onto the notes you want to play. but you still need to sweep over the strings with your palm of the picking hand to silence the notes afterwards like you do when sweeping. there is a tab for this example, google: "michael romeo betcha cant play this pdf"
@ArpeggioFelatio easier than you think. firstly, youll need a guitar that has some very high output pick ups. then take your guitar to the shop, or at your own expense, lower the action (height of the strings from the fret board) to as low as you can get them with out touching the frets. finally, have a sweet, ulta awesome amp+head unit with some good gain and just finger the arpeggio like you normally would. its should ring true.
I feel bad saying this, because Romeo is an amazing guitarist, but before I knew what he looked like, this is NOT what I expected him to look like haha
@sophimar1 speed, creativity, phrasing, tone, expression, compositional prowess, harmonic coherence and understanding, song writing, etc etc etc tips the scales massively to romeo. but don't ever forget how important malmsteen was/is to modern electric guitar.
this guy is incredible, i heard beethoven's original piece, and i thought to myself, "this could never be played on guitar" i was proven wrong on this day.
Then you don't know what feeling is. You don't become this good without a MASSIVE passion for the guitar, months upon YEARS of practice and a passion for music theory.
Shredding is having control over your instrument and being free of technical obstacles so your music is not limited by your playing ability.
If that isn't expression, what is? This is a different level of music, not considered the "best", but the most technical. A passion for music theory is in another league on its own.
Do you think Bach didn't have expression or show emotion through his compositions, just because they were fast?
@xPurpleDrinkx9001 Actually, Yngwie was really influenced by Chopin. Which is a different style of musicality than Beethoven, which is what is being played by Michael here. The style isn't the same because Yngwie economy picks and sweeps almost everything. Michael Romeo is big on two-hand tapping.
who says super fast guitar players have no feeling? Man, something to has emotion doesnt have to be slow. If you play your heart whatever you play, it has emotion.
And Michael Romeo is not even close to Malmsteen's style. He shares neo classical influences but not even close, check out Malmsteen's style.
Hey man this is only my opinion, no need to insult. I like the shred but I prefer gilbert, vai, petrucci, satch... and for me they HAVE FEELING. I feel things when I listen their music and no like super fast arpeggios but I repeat it's only my PERSONAL OPINION.
ive heard that, and i get where your coming from. but im almost positive its Prelude in C by Bach. dont quote me on this though. im not absolutly sure. but this sounds like this vid ive seen from this movie where steve vai plays Prelude. and it sounds amazingly similar. but the vid i saw wasnt "tapping" (if thats what you wanna call this) lol. so idk.
yeah joe stump is rather pathetic in how blatent a malmsteen wannabe he is. No doubt he has his own merits, but clearly not enough that he can pull himself away from malmsteen.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Joe isn't an yngwie clone.......and yuo call yourself shredder in your nick name HA....HA......HA........HA........your comment sucks xD.......if someone here really knows Stump´s work......knows he is way better technically......
I've been listening to Romeo for about a year or so, and people say he's a Malmsteen clone, and to some extent, he is, but he does MANY things that Malmsteen never does (like use more pentatonic scales and tapping like Romeo does) I enjoy them both, but I personally prefer Romeo :\
Some of you don`t get it.....The fact that he isn`t using Distortion that much just OD, makes IT EASIER! Less string dissonance and stuff like that, it`s very mild and he doesn`t have a lot of things to control.Being so good like Michael is, minor string movement is surely dampened and with od it sounds flawless. The tapping sequence can be found in the ,,Betcha can`t play this" video of him
Wow,this has to be one of the best tapping ever,I've watched this stuff hundred times and it's still so awesome. Romeo is one of the top 3 guitar players with no doubt...
scallopped neck makes it harder to play fast but it makes vibrato and bends much easier. and malmsteen is taking more influence from classical music than other guitarists. =)
lol, effects and tapping, this guy is a cheap cheater of malmsteen. what do you do when you canät play a scalloped fretted guitar and shred fast and clean.... you tap instead of using the pick
You obviously don't listen to symphony x, lol. Romeo is faster, cleaner, more technical, more original, etc. than malmsteen. don't get me wrong, i love malmsteens playing, romeo's just leagues ahead in terms of musicianship
and you obviously don't listen to malmsteen :). or know that it's actually extremly much harder to play by being malmsteen. having a scalloped fretted guitar and a nerve damage in his hand and all. this guy has obviosly stole from yngwie so much, that he has no own style. i've listen to symphony x sometimes, but i hate that kinda music xD. this guy is good, but he wouldn't be anything without malmsteen just as malmsteen wouldn't be anything without hendrix
I actually own most of malmsteens albums. Even before nerve damage, malmasteens playing wasn't on the same level as what romeo's is now. Most of malmsteens shredding licks are just linear runs in the phrygian mode, iirc, romeo seems to have more variety in his playing. Again, i love malmsteen, i just think romeo is clearly the more skilled musician. I also think malmsteen drew alot more influence from blackmoor than hendrix, but don't quote me on that :P
i was referring to malmsteen pickin up a guitar when hendrix died xD... but allright, music can be intepretated in many ways... personally i think malmsteen is more of a harmonic scale wanker...
lol it doesn't! if you learn from the beginning, how to play with scalloped, then it's easy. but when you never touched a guitar with scalloped frets, you will have a hard time , since you must put alot less pressure.
it does. and he did it so he could play faster without having to use alot of power. he has a nerve damage. well malmsteen actually cheats as much as this guy, but as i said before, it's a question of personal taste
yep, and he has effects making the sound clearer than what it should be, it's easy to notice. try doing the same on a regular guitar without any effects
Pareku, you SERIOUSLY need to just stop talking, you have absolutley no clue what you're talking about and it's embarrassing for all of us. Michael doesn't use hardly effects or even that much distortion, nor does he use a string dampener like most tappers would. There is so much more to Michael's playing then just tapping as well. His picking is immaculate, his songwriting is superb, and his timing is just unreal. He is so much more fleshed then Malmsteen. And your technique isn't too hot btw
couldn't agree more with you.. I just listened to the oddysey intro.. and I still can't believe so much creativity and inspiration in writing the whole orchestral part.. not to mention his perfect technique. I saw this guy live and he plays complicated stuff like he's playing some children tune.. so relaxed and effortless.
I dont think Malmsteen wouldnt be anything without Hendrix. Like he has said, Hendrix doesnt have much of musical influence to him, more of the style influence. If there would not have been Hendrix, we might still see Malmsteen on stage doing exactly same stuff he does, but he just wouldnt wreck guitars and stuff like that on the stage.
They are both awesome musicians and my gods, both of them deserve respect. Even when the one is an influence to another.
Dude. If it weren't for Hendrix, Yngwie would not have started music at all. He thought music was for pussies. When he saw Jimi burn the guitar he saw how cool it could be. That's why he started at all. So, without Hendrix Yngwie (and a lot of other kinds of music involving distortion and crazy effects) wouldn't exist.
It's a number sequence from Porcupine Tree's "Even Less", or "Counting Control" from The Conet Project. I have to look at the lyrics every time I forget it, or just listen to the tracks.
Thats kewl it has melody to it. It sucks when a good lick goes to waste because it's been sped up too much. But in this case it was good. It wasn't too fast.
Yup, and this month I believe caparison is making replicas of Michael's guitars for sale to the public, same wood pick-ups and everything, 'cept the string gauge that comes on there. :)
