For use of thermite in cutting steel, see my video "Incendiary Experiments".
The mythbusters guys set off 1000 pounds of thermite to try to cut a car in half, and explosives experts at New Mexico Tech try to cut a column and a beam, and a Florida Engineer, Jonathan Cole, cuts columns, beams, bolt heads, and bolts.
@BankaiIchigo12345 glicerine is just like sugar you can buy it from your super market and potasium permanganate you can buy from a chemical supplier you can just lite it with a liter but
@alandrumo I was able to get thermite to ignite with a california-safe sparkler . My thermite was home made all the way and was likely more difficult to start then thermite made from better milled and more pure materials.
@AgentToast2 Yeah it was, there is sufficient heat. I only have one video on my channel and we used a sparkler as our fuse to ignite the thermite in the microwave.
@benschierywashere sparklers aren't made of thermite, they are made of magnesium which is one of the only things with enough energy to ignite a thermite reaction.

Glycerine/ glycerol from Tesco for making cakes. All the rest came from Ebay. Rust is a pigment for making paint etc. Potassium permanaganate I use for my fish as an anti-fungal treatment (It WILL stain your fingers, be carefull).
Take note, fine aluminium will react much more violently and brightly compared to iron oxide if they somehow get mixed correctly with potassium permanganate and ignited.
I did use Aluminium. It reacted fast as it was in a warm house and the Aluminium its self was very very fine(atomised).
The grey powder between the potassium permanganate and the thermite mixture( Al and Fe2O3) was a mix of KMnO4 and Al as I found this easier to ignite.
Not even close to actual thermite. Failure.

What's glicerine and what's potasium permanganate? They sound like exotic chemicals, that you won't find at Home Depot.

You can ignite it with a magnesium ribon you light with a torch or any hot chemical reaction like potassium permenganate + glycerine.

Glycerine from Tesco. You will find it in the baking section.

Can you ignite the mix with a fuse or with and type of heat or does it have to be glycerol

Damn... all house-hold ingredients for me.... except the aluminium. and iron oxide. I'm going to check out the KMNO4 fuse for giggles.

No way! that is so easy! everyone else is saying to use magnesium with a blow torch or sparklers. this is way better!

is it possible to light thermite with a sparkler?

I would have thought so but never tried.

@AgentToast2 yes thats what a sparkler is...the tip is a magnesium compound to ignite it and the silver compound is a glue mixed with thermite

so where do the batteries come into all of this?...
homemadexplosives101 1 year ago
They are in the thermite. Just felt like sticking them in there for the sake of it as I had them handy when weighing the ingredients.
If I remember right you can hear one pop when the thermite goes off.
