As a kid I remember seeing the "Tower of Power" on a boat and thought it was so cool. This is such an awesome video. 115 Stack Shaft !!! It just looks cool.
@eeemanjam more powerful. hp was rated at the propeller instead of at the crank like new motors. can't remember the year that merc stopped under rating their hp
We only had a 50hp Merc made back in the 70's, but it was awesome. You could not kill it. One year we were having problems getting it to accelerate past idle consistently. We tore it down, and found 12 of the 16 reeds were broken clean off. I had no idea how this thing actually ran at all, but it did. Replaced the reeds, and it ran like new. Now that is dependable.
The old Yamaha motors weren't very good, no power and loud as well. .They couldn't touch a motor like this back then. That's why you don't see many out there. New one, yes there great...
I've got 2 on my Whaler. Awesome motors. I was told to put a 4 blade prop rather than a 5 blade which I currently have. Would anyone be able to give me advice? I have no trouble getting to plain - it shoot out of the hole, but maybe I should be thinking about getting better mileage.

What a great motor, I have a '76 115hp on my 14ft Caribbean, straight 6 all the way its just an imposing looking and sounding beast. Old school Mercury rocks!!
i cant wait to get that very same 115 on my boat switching the 115 off my bass boat and putting it on my ski boat and putin the 80 on the bass boat there both tri hulls thank god
This is going back in time a bit lol. Used to have the 150hp version of this on the back of a 16 foot Fletcher Arrow that we used for water skiing. Brilliantly fast with a bronze two blade prop but god did it drink fuel.
These are awesome. I have twin 115's on my 22' Whaler and its just moves baby!! Love the motors - always star and sound great.
A quick question; I need to replace my tilt & trim motor on one - can that be replaced without removing the motor?
Anyway - I am publishing a video today - I will call it Boston Whaler - 22' Revenge - Twin 115 Mercury - Tower of Power. Check it out and let me know what you think.
Blazer45567...Your an idoit that does not know shit about the tower of power Mercury 115. #1 Its a 2-stroke, so Ya! its going to be LOUD!!! so get a pair of earplugs or better yet grow a pair of balls, 2# these motors impaticular are the iconic symbol of the industry so in translation, they where the fastest most reliable and by far in my opinion, the most awsome looking motor ever. I could go on and on aout how great these motors are ut your not worth it. I happen to own one and it spanks all
I have a boat that i have to sell, but dont know anything about boats.....Its a i think 1998 or 2000 164 cayman flats boat with the tower, 1998 Mercury 115 hp & a Loadmaster trailer ....I need to find out a price range to ask for $....Thanks!
@FlowOne16 Actually the motor sounds great!! Your English sounds bad. This video brought back some great memories. Thanks for adding this video Storm...Go Old School !!!!
I JUST bought a boat with a non running 115 tower of power on it. Unfortunately the previous owners overheated it...... but it will be in tip top shape in a week hopefully.
@Peabody182 : Thank you. This is my uncle's boat, I filmed it. Unfortunately, he sold this boat with the motor on it. Stupid in my opinion because he worked hard to fix up that ol' motor. But what can ya do now? :(
@9878tubeyou It was fresh shorts actually, and man duzzzz that motor put a big shit eatin grin on my face when I rip 60 to 70 mph up or down the St. Johns river with it.
used to watch the Mercury test boats fly around the islands near Sarasota, FL back in the 60's those were the days, the 1100 was their biggest motor then
Anyone ever have any problem with the throttle assembly in these motors? I have a 77 merc 115, and the neautral rev handle likes to jump up when i throttle it up. Is that because its all hooked to the same cable?
Awesome. First boat I ever rode in was a Bonito 15 ft. I guess fitted with a '67 Merc 500 that ran awesome for 40+ years. I don't remember how it happened, but that boat had to be sold when the motor started having a rod-knock problem. The 4-cyl ones are the ones I've heard the most, and have never ridden in a boat with 'Tower of Power' I-6 sadly.
hey i have a sidewinder with an old school tower of power too, and a stainless prop what are you pitch is your prop and what are you getting for top speed?
For what it's worth, the faceplate is a '73 or '74. 72's had blue trim but still said "Kiekhaefer Mercury", not yet "Mercury Marine." (From '75 on the faceplates were black.)
I wouldn't want to water ski that fast lol

I think it was Mercury that worked with Yamaha back in the early 90's to design the engine that was used in the Ford Taurus SHO.
Dad had a 70hp on the back of his deep V 17'. Good for trolling, plus it would still do 35 mph. Pulled two skiers no problems.
peterbabine 1 year ago
You just can't beat those inline six motors. The're awesome, look good too. By far my favorite engine design by Mercury.
