  • Is the engine still here in Fresno? That's where I live

  • how do you stop it

  • I want to see it actually do some work, e.g. driving a generator with light bulbs, so one could get an estimate of generated power.

  • Strange that there have been no comments on this page for 2 years ... The opposed- piston two-stroke diesel made by Junkers in the 1920s with a single crankshaft and tie-rods to the upper piston and scavenge pump of each cylinder was modernised in 1930 to the twin-crankshaft design, which flew in a Focke-Wulf aircraft in 1932. This type of engine was used in Junkers cargo planes and later bombers. After WW2 it was used as the basis of the Leyland L.60 engine for the Chieftain tank. See Youtube!

  • @gaudeamus66 The opposed piston engine was used in the Junkers Ju-86. It was a diesel engine that ran on the two-stroke cycle and had two crankshafts and twelve pistons. It was quite high revving at 2800rpm and produced about 800hp. This gave the aircraft an excellent range due to the good fuel economy.

  • Like Stelzer or Junkers??? Do you think we will see any major improvements in the internal combustion engine? For example, a small combined cycle engine or a movement to electronic valves and electronic piston control?

Thank you for your scientific efforts.

  • @etramway ,, New designs are being patented and re-patented all the time but developing them is another story.

.I dont know of more than 2 reasons to develop an opposing piston design..

If i had to choose a patent to develope it likely would be the TOR opposed fire occillating rotor.. patented around 2001. it has a clear advantage over the Otto/piston engine, but GD knows what the disadvantages are..

  • I have a feeling we haven't seen the last of the opposed two stroke; I'm hoping to see more of them show up in diesel. Thanks for keeping the spirit alive :-)

  • cool im in hanford

  • cool. he just spun it over and it ran on its own.

  • very cool indeed!! like a mini Napier deltic!

  • Exactly like 1/3 of a Napier Deltic. Except this is a 4 cycle and runs on gasoline. Thanks for the comment!!

  • i was thinking somthing like this but using 2 briggs into one

  • i was thinking of 2 5HP briggs to make a V-twin, that would sound awesome!

  • Uh, they actually already build a Briggs V-Twin, just not a 5+5HP one.

  • i know that, but not the super big 20hp ones or the opposed ones, just a small v twin one.

  • Does it hav supercgarger then?

  • Nope.. It's a four-stroke..

  • sounds like a 4 stroke, but I can see the valves?

  • Yes, you can.. Exactly in the middle, when the cameraman comes near the engine.. The sparkplug is a little on the right, and in the middle, hidden behind the copper dome (probably the fuel or cooling tank) you can just see the valves..

  • cool
