@Ballard1979 The sample used by the verve was from the instrument version of The Last Time made by The Andrew Odham Orchestra. They fiddled with the original so much that you can hardly notice the connection. Nevertheless, it is the stones playing it. You can check it out at v=MKC5cdGBY04

Right around the middle it sounds alot like Bitter Sweet Symphony.

@rgshaluly Yes and I saw them the first time they were I'm pretty sure. I lived in England from '63 to '66 and there was a guy who had a movie on Saturday morning and he featured local talent during the intermission. Well, you guessed it...there is Mick and the boys barely shaving age and they blew me away. I told my Dad right then (I was 11) that they would be huge some day. He guffawed something like 'they look like they just crawled out of the sewer" but I knew better. Whataband !

@crazycatlady68 I'm not sure you'd want to be me if you're younger but it was a great time when music was going a hundred ways in terms of style. The Stones and Beatles were doing covers of the R&B American groups (the Miracles, Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, etc) until they found their own abilities to write. It was a great time no doubt. Wish you could "flash back" for at least a day to enjoy it. Mind if I come too?

In the chorus, there is a similarity in the lyrics, and slight similarity in the melody but different feel.. But the verses and guitar riff very much belong to the Stones Besides, the Staples Singers didn't write this tune either. They just recorded their version of it. It's hardly justified in suggesting the Stones of plagiarised from them.
