  • 50 years on, and it is still Joni that brings back to me the sound and feel of the sixties, more evocative to me than the Beatles, The Dead or Dylan. Driving a van around Europe back then, I had one cassete, "Blue" which plugged into the cigarette lighter. Despite playing it non stop for about 6 weeks then I can still listen to and love it now.

  • PLEASE CORRECT YOUR CLIP INTRO: Joni Mitchell WROTE this song, not Judy Collins!! :(

  • magical

  • Judy Collins might have had the "Hit" with this but Joni Mitchell was the composer & original artist.

  • Crystal beads to beckon.... there's a slide show every second.....

  • i wish every morning could be a chelsea morning.

  • Well, technically henhenstoll is correct. Here is Joni performing Judy Collins' hit. But jeez, who cares? Joni wrote it, made the best recording of it, and in this performance OWNS the darn thing.

  • This is Joni's song not Judy's!!! FIX THAT!

  • Fantastic.

  • lyrically this song drips with talent. give me the grace to write something as good as : we'll put on a day and wear it till the night comes.

    Joni = renaissance lady.

  • Judy Collins stole this song and now all of a sudden we have Joni singing a version of it! lol Anyways its great that you posted this brilliant vie. Thanks.

  • Joni's version of this is also much better than Judy Collins (ungrateful b***h).

  • I love this so much. I saw the complete show a while back on the BBC late one night. In the show Joni said she was suffering from a cold, and yet her voice is a pure and sweet as it ever was.

  • Sorry but your facts aren't straight. Joni Mitchell wrote that song and performed it first.

Look up Wikipedia and search for: Chelsea Morning

  • What a GREAT clip - thanks!!!

  • She is AMAZING.........NO QUESTION.........

  • I just flew in yesterday from Madrid and american airlines plays this song while you're waiting to exit the plane. Pretty cool after a 10 hour flight.

  • I love her, she gave music a good name

  • She was such a peach in the day!

  • And still...........................

  • @gerrygent ....incredible!

  • my mom was a hippie and named me after this song, im happy she did.

  • One of my favs (there are so many Joni favs!!). Joni is beautiful in this fine vidoe. Thank you.

  • Chelsea NYC, not Chelsea GB.

  • again

    listen

  • forget it

    just listen to her voice

    and exquisite guitar

  • As I understand it, Bill and Hilary were in Chelsea, Massachusetts, when they heard the song and mistakenly thought that Joni was singing about Chelsea, MA, instead of Chelsea, GB.

  • The Clintons were fans of Judy Collins' version of the song; Judy performed it at Prez Clinton's 1993 Inauguration.

  • guitar

    voice

    tune and

    song

    at its finest

  • Sergio Mendes, and Lani Hall sung also this song, in the grioup Sergio Mendes and his Brasil 66.

  • Joni Mitchell wrote this song, so whose "hit" was it? Judy Collins memorably covered it.

  • Judy released it as a single 1969, and her version charted, and received a good deal of airplay; Joni did not release her version as a single, it was a track on her CLOUDS album, also from 1969. Both version are fabulous and well remembered.

  • Follow the arrows and click the blue

    DivaAnnFisher

    above.

Clear music and clear voices make a better world!!!

    DivaAnnFisher

  • what a strange way to describe this clip, "Joni Mitchell is performing Judy Collins' hit" when Mitchell herself wrote the song!

  • I love this !

Joni Mitchell wrote the words & music for this song.

In other words~ This song did not exist before Joni wrote it.

That said, ~Yes, Judy Collins did cover it very well, ...& made it a hit when Joni was not well-known yet.

Thanks to Judy for her help. Judy chose a great song to cover !

I love to listen to & watch Joni sing her songs, because the the emotion and expression falls clearly into place.

Doesn't completely happen when someone does a cover.

  • The only women thats truly matters

    just a marvel...

    and i love natalie mer

and joan arm, sade ,but come on!

compared to all the songs she has

    combimed they dont beat her

  • Wonderful open tuning...she's a marvel... :)

  • Well - I saw the title and was going to protest most veciferously but I see that has been done already.

The story is that Bill and Hillary were in London (Maybe even in Chelsea?) and a clothing store was playing this song and they stopped to listen and one said to the other "If we ever have a daughter let's call her Chelsea". Or something like that...

  • henhenstoll--Thanks for this live performance of Joni. This is now the 4th version of her performing Chelsea Norning and she is like Beethoven, Brahms, Gershwin, Miles, Diz, or Thelonius--every performance reflects the Joni of its time, which begs the question: At which time was this BBC recording made--if you know? Also if you know, are recordings of this concert for sale and where might they be obtained?

Thanks so much for sharing this fine sparkling jewel with the world.

  • The recording is from 1970. Sorry, don't know if it is available.

  • Excuse me, Joni Mitchell wrote this song! Judy Collins did a cover of it, but please get your facts straight. Laura Nyro also suffered this indignity when other people performed her songs, too. Joni and Laura: two of the greatest songwriters of all time!

  • @billyguns2 YOU TELL EM'!!!

  • @billyguns2 Well said! I was going to say the same thing about the Judy/Joni connection. I never really got into Laura Nyro, only because I didn't have anyone else who was into her. I've read, though, that Judy Collins treated Joni somewhat badly and didn't show her much respect. That's amazing considering Joni's songs were Judy's ATM for many years. Joni and Dylan are my two biggest lyrical influences.

  • @billyguns2 ===> Judy Collins also had a hit with "Both Sides Now"; another Joni song.

  • @billyguns2 Yeah! What's up withJoni supposedly singing"Judy Collins song!?! This is a Joni Mitchell song,Thank You Very Much!!

  • @billyguns2 ...... I agree with you on Joni & Laura they were DOTH Song Goddess'

  • @billyguns2 AMEN, AMEN, AMEN!!! My ultimate pet peeve is ignorant jerks who always know who did the covers but never know or give a damn about the poets who wrote them!!! Like jerks that yell 'Waylon' when Billy Joe Shaver sings HIS OWN SONGS. It's the height & depth of ignorance!!!!! I like Judy Collins a lot too & she has written some good songs BUT SHE DIDN'T WRITE THIS ONE!!!!

  • @billyguns2 Thank You!

  • I don't know why the info says that this is Judy Collin's song...Joni wrote it. Judy just covered.

  • Joni and Neil Young look like Sisters

  • I think what you meant to say was that Neil Young and Joni Mitchell both look like they

have American Indian blood. Neil Young is

definitely part Indian: I don't know about

    Joni.

  • What an intimate concert. How fortunate to see a brilliant performer so close up. Pure, magical singing.

  • lyrically

    musically

    a sonorous ballad of light

  • This song has always made me feel glad to be alive - every single time I hear it without fail it makes me feel happy - And I've been listening to it off & on for thirty years

  • Great song writtten by Joni Mitchell. Judy Collins' versions are totally different. I like both. Well, Bill & Hillary Clinton named their daughter "Chelsea" with Judy's version in mind. The version which reached the charts, neither the live nor the recent ones. Great thanks !
